10th edition FAQs

1. 10th edition course fees

receive a set of placards and a hard copy of the student manual; when
you book your first 10th edition course you need to pay the 10th
edition fee
 Registration fee payable to RCS per delegate: £150
 Hard copy of X-rays: £250; if you require a hard copy of X-rays place
your order with the RCS by 1st of July; X-rays will be available for
purchase via the RCC; please ensure you include postage
 Access to faculty resources for existing faculty is free of charge.

2. Planning for the 10th edition

 We recommend that centres book facilities for three days for their first 10th
edition course; although ATLS® 10th edition is a 2 day course, booking one
extra day will allow you to set up and organise a faculty meeting the day
before the course. A minimum of 2-3 hrs is required for the faculty
meeting.
 Courses held from September 2018 which are registered with us as 9 th
edition three day courses will be changed by us to 10th edition courses.
You will soon be able to set up 10th edition courses via the RCC. We will
notify you when this function is available.
 Course resources will be available on the RCS VLE

3. What are the main differences between the 9th edition and 10th edition
course
 Duration : The 10th edition is a 2 day, face to face course but delegates
have to complete online modules prior to the course
 Lectures replaced by online modules; approximately 15 hrs of pre-course
learning
 Skills stations are scenario based and are called Scenario Stations in the
10th edition (Airway Scenario, Breathing Scenario etc.)
 10th edition resources for faculty and delegates are online
 Assessment methods, moulage and triage sessions have not changed
(however some of the moulage and triage scenarios have been updated)
 New MCQs but the pass score is still 28/40 for participants and 32/40 for
IPs
 Pre-course MCQ assessment for delegates is hosted on RCS VLE and
needs to be completed online, in advance of the course.

4. How can instructors update to the 10th edition

 ATLS® instructors and co-ordinators will be given access to the 10th
edition course hosted on Moodle (RCS VLE)
 Completion of the update course is mandatory for instructors
 The course consists of:
 Webcast from the update day broken into sessions
 Assessment developed by ACS
 Instructors and co-ordinators will receive an automated notification
from RCS database with Moodle login instructions when the update
course is ready and they will have to complete both aspects of the
update
 Completion will be automatically registered on our database
 Please note that you must complete the update course prior to
teaching on the 10th edition course
 Instructors who have attended the update day or watched the webcast
will not be required to watch it again but they will have to complete the
assessment and confirm by ticking a box on the update course that
they have watched the webcast

adds and saves the individual delegates to the participant list on the
RCC
 Delegates will be sent a notification with the Moodle login instructions
when they are saved to the participant list

10. How can co-ordinators track delegates progress with eLearning?

 A set of automated notifications to co-ordinators will be implemented
 Notifying you when delegates receive notification with RCS
VLE login details
 4 weeks and 2 weeks before the course notifying you about
delegates who have not logged in
 1 week before the course notifying you about delegates who
have not logged in or completed the eLearning
 48 hrs before the course notifying you about delegates who
have not completed the eLearning
 24 hrs before the course notifying you about delegates who
have completed eLearning in full and those who have not
completed the eLearning and will not be able to participate in
the face to face course

11. Do the co-ordinators need to remind delegates about the completion of

mandatory online modules?
We will implement a set of notifications to delegates reminding them about the
completion but it would be helpful if you could contact them too, especially
those who have not completed or logged in to the eLearning one week and 48
hrs before the course.

12. Can I run a 10th edition course before September 2018?

RCS invited centres in December to apply to run a pilot between February
and end of May and majority of applicants were accepted. Centres holding
courses in July can enquire about running a 10th edition pilot.

13. How do I register an ATLS® 10th edition course

We are developing the RCC online tool to enable you to register 10th edition
courses with us. This function should be ready by the start of July.

14. Can a 9th edition course be changed to a 10th edition course?

Yes, we will be able to change your 9th edition course to 10th edition course on
our database

15. How many faculty are required for the 10th edition course?
 Faculty to delegate ratio will remain the same, 1 faculty to 2 delegates
plus the course director, however we strongly recommend having extra
faculty to allow for much needed breaks:
 10 faculty plus the CD for 16 delegate course
 12 faculty plus the CD for 20 delegate course
 14 faculty plus the CD for 24 delegate course
 Instructor candidates are not included in the core faculty numbers and
you can have a maximum of four instructor candidates per course
 Recertifying instructors (RI) are included in the core faculty and count
towards the minimum numbers required to run a course. There is no
upper limit of RIs per course – this will be at the discretion of the
course centre.
 Faculty teaching on a 10th edition course for the first time must be
present for the whole course; this is strongly recommended for all
ATLS® courses

16. Can I run 10th edition reverification course before I run 10th edition
provider?
No, you should first run 10th edition provider course prior to running a
reverification course but we will be happy to look at individual requests.

17. Will selection of IPs change?

No, but the IP form will slightly change to reflect changes to the course.

18. Will the instructor candidacy and recertification process change?

No, but the forms will be updated to reflect the changes to the course. Note,
that instructor candidates are not counted towards the core faculty numbers in
the 10th edition.

19. Can I have ICs and RIs on my first 10th edition course?
Yes

20. Will you provide the equipment list?

The equipment list for each scenario station is included in the scenario station
guides; the equipment for moulages has not changed but a full list will be
available

21. Can we have nurse observers on the course?

Yes, you can but please remember that there are no lectures on the course
and we will not be able to give access to 10th edition student resources to
observers.
