5.2. Supply cable calculation IEC

5.2.1. Instructions

When using 3phase + 1PE(*) as in fig 1:

• Take ITot compressor and add 10%
• Install the prescribed max fuse on each cable. (**)

When using 2 x 3phase + 1PE(*) as in fig 2:

• Take ITot compressor, add 10% and divide by 2
• Multiply amps in table contents by correction factor 0,8 (See table A52.17 (52-E1))
• Install a fuse half the size of the prescribed max fuse on each cable. (**)

When using 2 x 3phase + 1PE(*) as in fig 3:

NOTES:
(*) Size PE cable:

• For supply cables up to 35mm² -> same size as supply cables

• For supply cables larger then 35mm² -> half the size of the supply cables
(**) For prescribed maximum fuse: see AIB"

5.2.2. Example
Compressor type : IEC Full feature with I tot FF = 133A
Ambient operating temperature is maximum 50°C
Add 10% for ampacity I cable due to 10% over/under voltage

Cables to be used :
A. 3phase + 1PE: as in fig 1
I cable = 133A +10% = 146,3A
• Maximum ampacity for cable 95mm², method B2, ambient 50°C = 127A
• Maximum ampacity for cable 120mm², method B2, ambient 50°C = 146A (Max for B2)

• For supply cables up to AWG8 -> same size as supply cables
• For supply cables larger then AWG8 -> use max allowed ampacity of selected supply cables and compare with value in table below
(See UL508A table 15.1)
(**) For prescribed maximum fuse: see AIB: < 100A use AWG8, < 200A use AWG6, < 300A use AWG4, < 400A use AWG3

7.2.2. Example
Compressor Type :UL/cUL Full feature with I tot FF = 133A
Take ITot compressor, multiply by 1,25 (According to UL508A 28.3.2 "Ampacity shall have 125% of the full load current")

Cables to be used :
A. 3phase + 1PE: as in fig 1
I cable = 133A x 1,25 = 166,25A
• Maximum ampacity for AWG2/0 = 175A
• Maximum ampacity for AWG1/0 = 150A

Conclusion:
Use AWG2/0 cable

1

B. 2 x 3phase + 2 x 1PE: as in fig 2

I cable = 133A x 1,25/2 = 83,13A
• Max allowed amps per cable multiplied by correction factor 0,8
• Maximum ampacity for AWG3 = 100A x 0,8 = 80A
• Maximum ampacity for AWG2 = 115A x 0,8 = 92A

Conclusion:
Use AWG2 cable

C. 2 x 3phase + 2PE: as in fig 3

I cable = 133A x 1,25 / sqrt(3) = 95,98A
• Max allowed amps per cable multiplied by correction factor 0,8
• Maximum ampacity for AWG2 = 115A x 0,8 = 92A
• Maximum ampacity for AWG1 = 130A x 0,8 = 104A

Conclusion:
Use AWG1 cable
