B. COURSE DESCRIPTION

CWTS 11
The course consists of lectures, participatory discussions, team-building activities designed to
develop in the students positive values and skills, particularly those relating to self-esteem,
teamwork, leadership and communications.

C. OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE

This course includes activities and discussion that will help individuals to realize the things that
they can contribute to the barangay, community and country. Teaching them on how to be a
good leader, follower, possessing good attitudes and values to be a better individual.

Our country has so many problems and we need young leaders like you to address these
problems which have been affecting the lives of many Filipinos. The economy is likewise greatly
affected. There is also a threat in our national security. Calamities such as earthquakes,
typhoons, floods, etc also cause destruction to properties and lives of the Filipinos. This subject
will heighten your awareness of these various problems. What is your role? How can you help
victims during calamities? How can you defend and protect your country in case invasion or civil
war? Are you proud to be a Filipino? Do you love your country? Do you have that sense of
discipline, responsibility, hard work and other values which will help you do your role as a
Filipino? All these can be answered in this subject which will make you a very good leader and a
better person.

J. MODE OF DELIVERY, COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND OTHER SUPPORT SYSTEM


● This module is to be delivered on a printed modular modality. In this modality, you are in self-
study mode. You are expected to follow the study guide for this course. A minimum of 4 hours
per week is required for you to work for this course or a total of 36 hours in 9 weeks.

K. STUDENTS’ REQUIRED SKILLS NEEDED WITH THE SHIFT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING MODE
Distance learning covering both flexible tech-driven and printed modular modalities may sound
so wonderful that some of you may start with an unrealistic vision. In reality, these learning
specific modalities require just as much, if not more time and energy as traditional classroom
courses. It also requires specific skills and learning strategies in order to succeed.

With this new learning approach, you need:


1. Persistence
➢ Persistence is perhaps the biggest key to succeed in distance learning. Success
is for those who are willing to tolerate technical problems, seek help when
needed, work daily on every class, and persist through challenges. You should
understand that you run into a challenge, but keep trying and ask for help. You
have to set up a manageable study schedule and stick to it. Students who
succeed are those who log in and make progress every day. This is especially
important after the novelty of going to distance learning starts to wear off!

2. Effective Time-Management Skills


➢ You must be able to manage your time well. This flexibility is one of the great
benefits of distance learning. It can also be a drawback. If you procrastinate,
unable to stick to a routine study schedule, or is not able to complete
assignments without daily reminders from a teacher.

➢ Effective time management skills don’t just happen. You have to learn this by
practice. Once you do, you will benefit from it throughout your life. Follow the
tips below to develop yours:

➢ You are encouraged to review the syllabus for each course. You must develop a
long-term plan for completing the major assignments. Make a daily “To Do” list.
And have fun checking things off the list as you complete them. It takes time to
develop good habits. You will surely gain satisfaction from being well-organized
and in accomplishing your tasks.

3. Effective and Appropriate Communication Skills


➢ Communication skills are vital in distance learning because you must
seek help when you need it. Teachers are willing to help students, but
they are unable to pick up on non-verbal clues, such as a look of
confusion on a student’s face. You are advised to follow these tips:
➢ Use the tools provided by the school to communicate with teachers.
Many schools and programs provide several ways for students and/or
parents to communicate with teachers and staff. These might include e-
mail, discussion groups, chat room office hours, cell phones, and even
text messaging.
➢ Teachers want to help students to succeed in his/her classes and will
surely answer questions.

➢ You may feel awkward to talk with teachers this way, but these
channels aim to bridge the communication gaps in distance learning.
So, go ahead and see the channels specified in this course.
➢ Use appropriate style and language for school. When communicating
with teachers and other staff, you should write in full, grammatically
correct sentences and with a respectful tone. While many of you are
used to a very informal style of writing in chat room, blogs, text
messages, and so forth, for academic training in UNC along EIE, you are
encouraged to be mindful of your language and sentence
construction.
➢ Because of the distance, it's tempting for some of you to say things out
of anger or frustration that you would never say to a teacher in person.
Teachers in distance learning are both professionals and persons. They
should be treated with respect and courtesy in the same way that you
do in a physical classroom and with persons whom you encounter every
day like your family.

4. Basic Technical Skills


➢ Learners need basic technical skills to succeed. These include the ability
to create new documents, use word processing program, navigate the
internet, and download software.
➢ Most schools have new student orientation programs. These teach
students how to use the school’s learning management system and
other online tools, but they typically don’t cover the basics.
➢ If you lack basic computer skills, you may want to find an online
tutorial. You may also want to check the school’s main website for its
hardware and software requirements.

5. Reading and Writing Skills


➢ Reading and writing are the main ways to communicate in distance
learning modality.
➢ Although some hard copies of textbooks might be required, you should
be comfortable reading a lot of documents on a computer screen and
able to type.
➢ Some tests and quizzes have multiple choice questions, but many of the
students’ assignments will involve writing short or long answers.

6. Motivation and Independence


➢ To be successful, you must want to succeed. Distance learning requires
independence, internal motivation, responsibility, and a certain level of
maturity.
➢ What are your reasons for attending school?
➢ Are you determined and self-motivated to succeed in school?

➢ There are many worthwhile reasons to work hard in school. You might
want a greater level of
➢ personal satisfaction with your future career or perhaps it’s personal
pride in your accomplishments.

7. A Good Study Environment


➢ Another critical component of academic success is a good study
environment.
➢ Get some peace and quiet. You will need a quiet place to work without
distractions from things like television, family, or roommates.
➢ Avoid games. Consider installing any computer games to avoid
temptation. Or keep the games on a different computer in the house.
➢ Turn off mobile phone devices. Let your friends and family members
know the hours that you will be “at” school.
➢ Beware surfing the black hole of the Internet. It is easy to lose track of
the time as you wander from site to site.
➢ Consider ergonomics. Adjust the height of your chair, keyboard and
screen so that you will be comfortable. Forearms and thighs should be
level and parallel to the floor. Wrists should not be bent while typing.
➢ Set up good lighting and comfortable seating. Lighting in the room
should be at least as bright as the computer screen to avoid eye strain.
➢ Go back to the above list from time to time to be reminded of helpful
tips to succeed in distance learning or probably in life in general.

INTRODUCTION:
In this module, you will learn how NSTP was implemented and the provisions
under the NSTP Law. What are the components of the NSTP? What are the roles
expected from the NSTP students as members of the community and of the Nation as a
whole?

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the module, the students should be able to:
1. Discuss the legal bases of the National Service Training Program
2. Identify and explain vital provisions of the NSTP Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR)
3. Differentiate the scope of the three components of the National Service Training Program
(NSTP).

Make a short video discussion about NSTP Law for at least 5 minutes or shorter. In your video
presentation, introduce first yourself before the discussion. You have to give credits to the persons

In a ¼ white cartolina, make a poster or collage showing the roles of an NSTP student in the

● 1. Republic Act No. 9163 is an act creating the National Service Training Program (NSTP) for
students at tertiary level, amending for the purposes of Republic Act No. 7077 and Presidential

Decre e No. 1706 and for other purposes.


● 2.Recognizing the vital role of youth in nation-building, the State shall foster civic consciousness
among young people and improve their physical, political , economic, intellectual and social
well-being. This will inculcate patriotism and nationalism among young people, and promote
their participation in public and civic affairs.
● 3. In pursuit of these goals, the youth, the nation's most important asset, must be inspired,
educated, coordinated, and engaged in military training, literacy, public welfare, and other
related efforts at nation service.
● NSTP was implemented effective in the school year 2002-2003. In this year, male or female
students enrolled in any baccalaureate degree and in at least two years Tech-Voc or Associate
Course is required to complete at least one of the three components of the NSTP as a
requirement for graduation as stipulated in RA 9163, Rule 3, Section 4a.
● Three Components of NSTP:
● (1.) The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) – Provide military preparation to inspire, train,
coordinate and mobilize preparedness for national security.
● (2.) The Literacy Training Service:-Train students to teach literacy and numeracy skills to school
children, school youth and other service-needed sectors of society
● (3.) The Civic Welfare Training Service-It concerns the program aspect or activities contributing
to the general welfare and quality of life of community members or the quality of their facilities,
in particular those committed to the improvement of health , education, climate,
entrepreneurship, protection, leisure and morale of people and other social welfare programs.
● NSTP graduates may receive a completion certificate with the respective serial number provided
by CHED, TESDA, and DND. Both LTS and CWTS component graduates are a member of the
National Service Reserve Corps (NSRC) and can be tapped by the state for literacy and civic
welfare activities, particularly in the event of calamities. ROTC students are to be part of the
Citizen Armed Forces.

SELF-AWARENESS

INTRODUCTION
In Chapter 2 of our NSTP book, we will discuss the topics on Self-awareness, we will discover
our own self which reflects the individual’s emotional, psychological, spiritual, and total
personality. Self-awareness on the other hand, means to accept one’s self, one’s strengths and
weakness to the extent that one develops a clear picture of personhood; to reveal oneself to others by
investing or taking risks towards growth: and to express one’s feelings, consonant and dissonant in a
loving concern. (NSTP book p.1)
Developing an understanding of yourself is a perfect way to know more about yourself and what you are
capable of. There are a few excellent ways you can work on your self-awareness, but what you do next is
up to you entirely.Self-awareness is really just about being aware of who we are. It can relate to
knowing your own values, your beliefs, personal preferences and tendencies. (Canete, D.C). We will also
listen to the Song “Persons are gift” to introspect on who am I? Why am I living? What I am living for?
What do I want in life? And What direction am I taking?

TOPIC 2.1: SELF-ASSESSMENT


Self-awareness is always about just understanding who we are. It can be linked to understanding your
own values , interests, desires and patterns.
Developing an awareness of yourself is a great way to learn more about yourself and what you are
capable of. There are a few excellent ways you can work on your self-awareness, but what you do next is
up to you entirely.

HOW CAN I WORK ON IT?


1. Assess your self-talk
The first step toward self-awareness is listening to yourself.
What's up with your mind?
Is this a collection of pessimistic thoughts making you feel pretty crap?
Or do you just look at the bright side?

2.Using the senses


Our senses (especially the sight and sound) give us an enormous insight into the world, ourselves, other
people and circumstances. Yet those senses are still perceived through a self-talking screen.
3.Get the emotion out of you.
It can be tough if you aren't the type of person who wants to think too much about your emotions, but
it can be worth it really. The emotions are subjective and involuntary reactions to the events we
experience. They give us useful details, like our senses, about what's going on around us.

Sit in silence and just listen to what you think and to yourself. Stand in the mirror and hear what you
tell yourself about how you feel, your disappointment and your success. Write down your feelings and

TOPIC 3.1: THE FORMATION OF VALUES

During our infancy we begin to form values. Second, we learn to appreciate things that meet our basic
needs, but we respect those individuals in particular who give them to us. A conduct towards us is the
principal measure to what is worthwhile. The character and personalities are therefore influenced by
the attitudes and actions of the people who nurture us, the people around us and the people who
belong to us.

A list of terms related to VALUES is given in this operation. Each student picks 5 terms. Ask students
on a scale of 1-5 to rate their gut-level reaction to any term, from strongly negative to strongly

TOPIC 3.2: THREE KINDS OF VALUES

Values are norms and principles that we evaluate the individuals, community, attitude, actions and
everything that surrounds the person. Decency, engagement, integrity are an indication of the values an
individual possesses. Here are the values forms:

● UNIVERSAL VALUES are valued by all human beings due to the intrinsic nature of these values or by
virtue of our being human beings. It is shared by human beings regardless of culture and age. The
following are some of the universal values:

● CULTURAL VALUES depend upon people's social norms, religious views, and other environmental
circumstances. Thus, in a culture where the ration between males and females is only one to ten,
polygamy may be legal and ethical; if the opposite is true; polyandry can be the legal and ethical
practice. Divorce is allowed in some countries, in others it's a sin.

■ EXAMPLE:

Chinese women are subjected to fabric binding their feet to make their feet tiny and dainty. A
process of cutting and deformation of the toes

● PERSONAL VALUES are important to an individual and differ from person to person. Some
people may therefore value art more than money, and thus spend more time painting, even if
it provides little income.

TOPIC 3.3: CLARIFYING PERSONAL VALUES

We will do another important task to incorporate universal values into our lives: explain our own values.
Most of us go through life without realizing that our own personal beliefs are really ours. They are
literally representations of our external demands. We start to wonder why we are not happy with our
professions or why we get upset quickly when we do our jobo help us achieve this clarity, we have to try
to answer two questions:

1. Which are the things you want to learn or be, or become, before you die?

(In answering the query, you must look for a response that does not come from your outer self,
which is your rational mind or emotions. External self may respond according to the standards of
society that do not agree with your innermost self. Then see to it to check the list after a week,

month, and year. See whether your responses are still the same. Whether your list is correct at
these various times.

2. Which are the three things you wish to do or achieve over the next three years?
Answers to the query will help you decide whether you will be investing meaningfully your
coming years. Test even if your personal values are compatible with universal values. If not, take
a look at them and see if they are really what you want in life deep inside yourself.

TOPIC 3.4: INTEGRATION OF VALUES

In order to internalize values two things are required:

1. CLARITY OF UNIVERSAL AND PERSONAL VALUES:


We must be persuaded that universal values are true and worth following, and we must also be
persuaded that our personal values are simple and solid.

2. CONTRACT CONDITIONING ARE NEUTRALIZED


● Psycho-emotional conditionings: behaviors and emotional responses, such as fears,
resentments, etc.
● Mental conditionings: those moulded by cultural values, such as the measurement of
success and failure and philosophy of life. They create preferences for lifestyles, modes
of action, etc.

TOPIC 3.5: VIRTUES (THE GOOD HABIT)

● Intellectual virtues include:

o Speculative wisdom
o Practical wisdom (prudence)
o Intuitive reason (understanding)
● Moral Virtues, There are many virtues that make up good character, but the main ones that,

this part of the discussion is educational and the backbone of human principles.

TOPIC 5.2: TYPES OF LEADERSHIP STYLE


Leadership styles are part of a leaders tool kit. These styles can be used by the leader as
situation demands.

There are Seven Primary Leadership Styles:

1. Autocratic Style. "Do as I say".


An autocratic leader thinks he or she is the organization's smartest person, and knows better
than everyone else.
2. Authoritative Style. "Follow me"
This style is the product of leaders who are secure in planning the way and setting goals.
3. Pacesetting Style. "Do as I do"
This style describes a leader who is very driven, setting the pace as in racing.
4. Democratic Style. "What do you think".
This style shares information with employees about anything that affects their work
responsibilities.
5. Coaching Style. "Consider This.
This style views people for a reservoir of talent to be developed.
6. Affiliative. "People come first".
This style is one where the leader gets up close and personal with people.
7. Laissez-Faire Style

This style involves the slightest amount of supervision.

Five Levels of Leadership

1. Position (Rights). People follow you because they have to.

2. Permission (Relationship). People follow you because they want to. (Leaders touch a heart

before they ask for a hand)

3. Production (Results). People follow because of what you have done for the
organizations/team/students.

4. Personhood. People follow because of who you are and what you represent.

(Leadership is a combination of CHARACTER and COMPETENCE of who you are and what you can
do.)

To understand CHARACTER you have to remember the following:

1. CHARACTER is more than TALK, it's more about doing and RELATIONSHIP.

2. TALENT is a GIFT but CHARACTER is a choice. It needs WISDOM and DISCERNMENT.

3. CHARACTER brings lasting Success with people. "Where you treasure is, there your

heart is."

4. Leaders cannot RISE above the limitations of their Character.

An excerpt from the lecturer in International Seminar Workshop on Educational Administration, A new
trend in leadership is called "Servant Leadership". The phrase was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in the
Servant as Leader, an essay which was first published in 1970. In that essay he said:

"The servant leader is the servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve,
to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. Then conscious choice brings one to
aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is the leader first. The leader-first and the
servant-first are two extreme types.”

The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other
people's highest priority needs are being served.

According to Greenleaf (2004), the best test identify a servant leader is to ask the following
questions:

1. Are the people being served grow as persons?

2. Do they, while being served become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous more likely themselves
to become servants?

3. What is the effect on the least privileged in the society? Will they benefit or not?

● Should not be high soft-set.

Team building is a collective term for various types of activities used to enhance social relations and
define roles within teams, often involving collaborative tasks. Many team-building exercises aim to
expose and address interpersonal problems within the group. It is one of the foundations
of organizational development that can be applied to groups such as sports teams, school classes,
military units or flight crews.

Let us define first what recreation is and identify what
are the different theories about leisure.
Recreation is an essential part of human life and finds
many different forms which are shaped naturally by
individual interests but also by the surrounding social
construction. Recreational activities can be communal
or solitary, active or passive, outdoors or indoors,
healthy or harmful, and useful for society or
detrimental. A significant section of recreational
activities are designated as hobbies which are activities
done for pleasure on a regular basis.

TOPIC 6.1: BASIC CONCEPT OF PLAY AND RECREATION


Several famous authors like Slavon, Hulzinga, Froebel and Plato describe the concept of PLAY while
authors like Carison, Vannier, Bromney, Fritzgerald, and Butler defines what Recreation means to them.

5 values of recreation are also discussed in your book on page 74. This topic highlights the essence of
recreation in the different aspects of human being.

RECREATIONAL THERAPY

Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes
recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with
illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-
being.

In your NSTP book on page 74, examples of Therapeutic Recreation Services are discussed for those
patients with special cases such as those who’s arm or leg was amputated, or those individuals with
hearing and visual impairment.

TOPIC 6.2: TEAM DEVELOPMENT

A team is a small group of people with complementary skills and share responsibility for achieving
specific performance goals. They are committed to a common purpose, cooperate with each other
based on an agreed set of expectations, and hold them accountable for every action.

Team development generates an atmosphere by encouraging cooperation, teamwork, interdependence


and by building trust among team members.

According to a psychologist named Bruce Tuckman (1965), teams go through Different Stages of
Development namely forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Each plays a vital part in
building a high-functioning team. Read the detailed discussion of these stages on pages 75-78 of your
NSTP book.

In 1977, Tuckman added a fifth stage called Adjourning Stage. This stage is sometimes known as
mourning stage because members have grown close and feel a loss now that the experience is over.
Once a project ends, the team disbands.

INTRODUCTION
This module is introduced to NSTP/CWTS students to prepare them for future self-
employment because what the country needs most are Filipino entrepreneurs and not-foreign owned
companies where the Filipinos become corporate slaves. One of the keys to develop and improve the
country is to be self-sufficient, that is Filipinos should not rely on employment but rather be self-
employed by putting up their own business.

This module is composed of the topics on: What an Entrepreneur is, The Traits of an Entrepreneur, The
Roles of Entrepreneur, Filipino Values Favorable for Entrepreneurship, Forms of Business Organization,
How to Go Into Business and Social Responsibility of Business.

The students are expected to read the concepts and apply them in real situations. This module serves as

FIRST AID, DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND EMERGENCY SAFETY MEASURES

INTRODUCTION
Typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions. These are some of the calamities that we
experienced, and we will continue experiencing. But we do not know when exactly these natural
disasters will strike our community and locality. With this reality, what we can do is to be ready, to
prepare ourselves, to learn skills and knowledge to prevent and mitigate the destruction and protect us
and our loved ones.

Have you experience witnessing an accident? What was your initial action and reaction? In this
module, you learn the principles of basic life support, use and application of bandaging techniques and
first aid treatment for wounds and animal bites.
First Aid is an immediate care administered to an individual before the arrival of a professional medical
practitioner or while the victim is being transported to the nearest hospital or clinic. The National Red
Cross provides these Guidelines in giving emergency care. In real life scenario everyone could be a First
Aider even if you are not in the medical profession field as long as you know the principles of a First
Aider learn the skills and knowledge even an ordinary citizen to give help is caring.

Subtopic 3: Golden Rules in Giving Emergency Care


Before admitting first aid, make sure to identify yourself to the victim’s relatives or companions.
Provide comfort and emotional support, respect the victim’s, modesty and physical privacy. Stay calm
and don’t panic. Attend first to the most serious injuries. Ask the people surrounding the area to get or
move away from the injured person to have good ventilation and loosen tight clothing when the victim
has difficulty in breathing.
You should not let the victim see his/her own injury, avoid unrealistic promises. Stay on the
victim, see his/her own injury, avoid unrealistic promises. Stay on the victim all the time before to get
help with the experts. Do not trust the judgement of a confused victim and never allow him or her to
make a decision.

Subtopic 4: Bandaging Techniques


Triangular bandage is usually made of muslin. It can be made by simply cutting diagonally the 60
inch square of a piece of cloth, making it into two triangular bandages. The longer side of the triangular
bandage is called the base with both corners dubbed as ends. The corner opposite to the base is called

Subtopic 6: Wounds and Types of Wound

In medicine, a wound is defined as a type of physical trauma wherein the skin is torn, cut or
punctured (an open wound), or where blunt force trauma causes a contusion (a closed wound). In
pathology, it specifically refers to a sharp injury which damages the dermis of the skin.
Before any medical or paramedical evaluation, (a) wound is considered as minor depending on
its severity. Closed wounds can be just as dangerous as open wounds. An injury to the brain such as a
contusion is an extremely dire closed wound, and requires emergency medical attention.

recovery.
● As part of risk reduction measures, this module discusses first aid basics and basic life support.

● Most injuries and sudden illnesses do not result in death, but rather result in hospitalization,
treatment in an emergency department or from a general practitioner, or treatment from a first
aid provider.
● Everyone should be able to provide first aid, because most people will eventually find
themselves in a situation requiring it for another person or themselves. Saving lives is important,
but first aid providers are more frequently called upon to provide initial care for less-severe
conditions. If not properly treated, these less-severe injuries can evolve into something more
serious.

Volunteerism is an integral act in the society which is usually geared towards a social
purpose that helps other people to alleviate suffering. In one way or another we have experienced being

this pandemic. Perhaps there had been so many acts of volunteerism that were published and went viral
in social media platforms. Those are the simple acts of kindness and generosity extended to those in

give hope, promote good and even improve the quality of life.As we faced this COVID-19 pandemic,

Which might leave you wondering, “what do they even get from it?” Honestly, it depends. But if there’s
anything that always doubles when we give back, people, even with a broken smile, would tell you its
happiness.

Understanding what truly matters

Regardless if it’s volunteering at a local event or making monetary donations, it all evens out. After all,
the simplest deed can be enough to ignite change and provide a renewed sense of hope for those who
quietly need it.

One of the struggles most of us face when donating is thinking that we can’t possibly give enough to
make a difference. This was true, even for me. What we often forget, however, whether we’re donating
or just lending our time to a cause, is that we’re not doing it alone. And that what we’re doing
collectively is what will truly matter in the end.

The small acts of kindness we do, however, can also become the ones that would will others to do the
same the next day and so on. For all we know, we’re already giving something more than what we
thought we’re capable of.

How do we give back? Where to start?

Volunteering is more accessible and actionable today. In our website alone, there are hundreds of
volunteer opportunities that you can participate in with friends and family. If you need a place to start,
we’re proud to say that we’re just a few clicks away.

Aside from attending an event, we can also promote causes online and through social media. It’s
something that’s on us to take advantage of. That, and making sure that our belief actually lives in what
we say or do in person.

Don’t forget that the best way to lead is by setting an example to those around us. We might not always
be present at volunteer drives and events, but our drive to spread a positive impact should be with us
wherever we go.

Lastly, it’s vital for us to remember that giving back comes in many forms, like monetary and donations
in kind. Along with other donors, we can even fuel projects and other volunteer opportunities that could
help and engage more people than we initially intended to.

Challenges that new volunteers face

It isn’t always straightforward for everyone even when volunteering. There are challenges, which are all
valid, that volunteers may face at different parts of their journey. Here are some of those, along with
tips on what we can do to overcome these early challenges:

We don’t know what is needed – people will go to great lengths to support those who are in need. But
sometimes, we’re stuck simply because we’re not sure of what we can do for others.

How to overcome it – take a different approach or look for other opportunities. You shouldn’t just give
up your will to help. There has to be a perfect volunteer opportunity for you and it could be hiding in
plain sight on our website.

We don’t have time – time constraint is hard to overcome just by sheer will. And it’s usually not our fault
either that we can’t catch a break. However, all is not lost.

How to overcome it – take the pressure off of yourself by planning ahead or considering other ways to
make an impact. Funding a project close to your advocacy, for one, should get you started. There’s great
fulfillment in achieving a common goal for the benefit of others.

We don’t know who needs help – not that we’re oblivious to the fact they exist, but we often struggle to
identify the victims right away.

How to overcome it – use digital platforms to learn more about the community or institution that needs
help. Take note of what they need and start with one person or community at a time. Your actions won’t
need to have the biggest impact right away.

We’re not ready for it – no one is born like it, but everyone, at their own pace, can take on a bigger role
in the community.

How to overcome it – we did just mention that we can always start with one person, right? Well, it’s
okay if that person is you. It isn’t uncommon for people to volunteer without knowing what they will get
in return, besides that exception we mentioned earlier in the blog. The thing is, you mustn’t be scared

and even if you are, you should allow yourself to take that leap of faith. The jump and what’s beyond it
will be worth it.

The thing about giving back is that the more you become exposed to it, the less likely it is for you to
become concerned as to how it all comes in full circle. Although, I can confirm that it always does.
Whether that’s a little tap on the shoulder, a simple ‘thank you,’ a cheeky smile, or a footnote in
someone else’s story, there is much to be had in letting our selfless side take over.

Volunteerism is both beneficial to the volunteer and to the person being help by. Volunteering
helps people in need and the community. The volunteers get to acquire new friends, connect with the
community, learn new skills, and develop self confidence. Helping others is a cycle; it’s a continuous
process that promotes common good. Simple acts that can ignite change and give hope to those who
are really in need. Regardless of our status in life there will always be a way to extend help. Volunteering
is not always about money but it involves the time, talent and skills by which you can devote to a social
purpose and make a difference in someone’s life. Indeed, we cannot address all the problems or
suffering in this world but with little act of kindness and generosity would create a better life.

COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT

INTRODUCTION
One of the activities of the NSTP/CWTS is to conduct community extension service in their
chosen or respective community. They have to choose the appropriate project for the community so as
not to waste time, money, effort and other resources that will be used. To ensure success of the project
the needs of the community should be determined and properly assessed.

This module discusses the different strategies in conducting the needs assessment for a particular
community. The students are expected to go to the community, gather data by conducting interviews
with the barangay/community officials, the residents/beneficiaries of the project. After which, they have
to prepare and submit an action plan for a chosen project based on the needs assessment. They have to
observe the components of the action plan.
