Case study 2

The company in question for this particular case study, is Alokozay International Limited.
Founded in 1990, they focus mainly on products such as soft drinks, tea, juices, as well
as most paper products. We will mainly focus on the paper product side of things.

With the two SDG’s zeroing in on no world hunger & clean water & sanitation,
production of paper products is a very good base to start from. As the processing of
paper products, such as face tissues & toilet rolls require processing of a lot of water, it
falls right under Alokozay’s interest for the first idea.

As it takes anywhere from 6 gallons to 15 gallons of water per roll of toilet paper, and
the average time taken to use one roll of toilet paper is 5 days. This accounts to
anywhere from 438 gallons per year to 1095 gallons of water wasted every year. To
counter this problem, we propose that Alokozay picks up a system of reusing this water
by running it through a water purifier. A water purifier on the slightly larger scale costs
about 100000$ to 200000$. While this may look like a loss for the company at first, it
can further market the purified water at low prices, which the people who are in
poverty & facing hunger can afford. This also claws back a lot of the money lost for the
water purifier, and will bring the company back to parity (and could even make
revenue), after a certain period of time.

Along with this, while providing the needy with water, the company can also give out
flyers/leaflets with the packaging of the water (or on the packaging itself), on tips to
have better sanitation, how to wash their hands, take clean showers, and so on.

Alokozay can also scale up social protection programs, especially for the farmers & the
people that they will be supplying to. They can provide them with contracts at a minimal
cost, which will cover their necessities in terms of food. For the farmers, the contract
can further go on to provide them with better tools & materials, with the clause being
that the products harvested have to be sold back to Alokozay who can in turn sell it in
turn to the people who are in most need of it; thus making profits for the farmers, the
company & the food reaching the people who are most in need of it.

The company can also provide assistance & support to SME’s who are deeply invested in
the food & water industry, as well as in rural areas. This assistance would make it
possible for the SME’s to better their techniques and reach out effectively to the people
in need of the food & water. (mostly rural areas with higher poverty rates)
The scaling up of social protection programs can also include better food & raising of the
cattle of the farmers, which accounts for half or more (in most of the countries). This
can be done by providing the farmers with better food for the cattle, as well as better
coniditons for them to live in, and better medical conditions, with regular checkups.

PESTEL Analysis

Political (P) - Governments can start public welfare programs where they can spread
awareness of the importance of clean water and sanitation among civilians and fund or
form school to spread education regarding such serious topics so the society can
become totally self-sustainable in the future. Educate famers on how to produce more
agriculturally rich produce.

Economic (E) - Educating the poor and the underprivileged can not only increase the
literacy rates of the country but also increase employment rates in the future as the
government can give them jobs to manage them the public services in their own
community. Even Alokozay can hire such loyal men and women as these people will be
grateful to them for their help and will be educated enough to be employed.

Social (S) - The quality of lifestyle and working conditions will change as they will be able
to move towards a bit of more urbanized lifestyle as their mindsets change.
Underprivileged people can use the newfound education to get ore sustainable,
innovative and environmental friendly solutions to their own problems.

Technological (T) - Alokozay can use the government’s aid to fund R&D to come up with
more technologically viable and cheaper solutions of solving the problem of clean water
and sanitation, and food wastage so these can be implemented to create a greener
society.

Environmental (E) - Solving zero hunger will not only help solve problems of food
reaching everyone, food storage, food wastage, etc. It will also help contribute to
climate change positively. Dumping of excess of food waste in landfills can produce
methane. 8-10% of greenhouse emissions come due to food wastage. Therefore, solving
these problems will indirectly help in the flight against climate change.

Legal (L) - Alokozay will need licenses and permits from the Government to operate in
the countries. They will also need to abide by the consumer and employment protection
laws so no one is incorrectly exploited.
