Derivation of EN 13445-3 Allowable Stresses

Non Austenitic Steel:

The formula for deriving the allowable stress is as follows:

fd = min( Rp0,2/t / 1,5; Rm/20 / 2,4 )

Where:
Rm/20 = the lower of the tensile strengths at room temperature
Rp0,2/t = the 0,2% proof stress at design temperature
fd = the allowable stress

Austenitic Steel:

Elongation must be considered. The two elongation ranges below

usually refer the direct and transverse material directions.

When 30% <= A < 35%,

fd = Rp1,0/t / 1,5 (also the allowable for flanges)
When A >= 35%,
fd = max[(Rp1,0/t / 1,5) ; min( Rp1,0/t / 1,2; Rm/t / 3) ]

Where:
Rp1,0/t = the 1,0% proof stress at design temperature
Rm/t = the tensile stress at design temperature

Choosing the Elongation from the Material Specification.

This is an abridged sample of a fictitious material specification.

Steel Description:

Name Number 0,2% Proof 1,0% Proof Tensile Elong. Impact Energy
Stress Stress Stress aft. Fract.% (ISO-V) kV

XXX 1.2345 200 240 480 35 40 60

YYY 1.7777 210 250 490 35 45 55
ZZZ 1.8888 305 315 580 35 40 65

In the above table, there are two values for the elongation. PV Elite uses
the equation for the larger elongation.

Because H / D < 7.0
CF = CF1 + (CF2-CF1)*( H/D - 1) / (7 - 1)
= 0.5 + ( 0.6- 0.5)*( 2.012 - 1)/(7 - 1)
= 0.517

Value of Alpha, Zg is taken from Table C6-2 [Alpha, Zg]

For Exposure Category C:
Alpha = 7.0, Zg = 274320. mm.

Height of Interest for First Element [z]

= Centroid Hgt + Base Height
= 43.525 + 0.0 = 43.525 mm.
but: z = Max(4572.0, 43.525) = 4572.0 mm.

Note: Because z < 15 feet, use 15 feet to compute kz.

Velocity Pressure Coefficient [kZ]:

= 2.58( z/zg )^(2/Alpha) : z is Elevation of First Element
= 2.58( 4572.0/900 )^(2/7.0)
= 0.801

Determine if Static or Dynamic Gust Factor Applies

Height to Diameter ratio :

= Maximum Height(length)^2 / Sum of Area of the Elements
= 2068.248(^2)/21263.016
= 2.012

Vibration Frequency = 77.9 Hz

Because H/D < 5 And Frequency > 1.0: Static Analysis Implemented

The following two calculations allow for any user units

Compute [tz]
= 2.35 * Sqrt(DO / VesselHtg/30(feet)^(1/Alpha)
= 2.35 * Sqrt( 0.005/2068.248)^(1/9144.0)
= 0.205

Compute [Gh]
= 0.65 + 3.65 * tz
= 0.65 + 3.65 * 0.205 = 1.4

General Notes:

Case types HI and HE are in the Un-Corroded condition.

Case types WE, WF, and CW are in the Un-Corroded condition.

A blank stress and stress ratio indicates that the corresponding

stress comprising those components that did not contribute to that
type of stress.

For EN-13445 the computed stress intensity is compared

to the design stress fd for wind cases and the compressive
stress is compared to the fTest for earthquake cases.
See EN-13445 in table 22-1 for more information.

An asterisk (*) in the final column denotes overstress.

Conical Section From 30 To 40 P265GH

CONE SHELL

Large End Cone Calculations:

Without a knuckle radius in accordance with:EN 13445 Equations 7.6.6.

Cone Geometry and Geometry Factors:

Mean Large End Diameter [Dc]:

= Di + ej + ci
= 1385.0 + 5.615 + 1.0
= 1391.615 mm.

Note: Analysis based on constant cone thickness and iterating

on the large end cylinder thickness.

Final required thickness of the Cone [e]:

= max( ej, ecyl, econ ) + ci + co
= max( 5.615, 5.039, 5.821 ) + 1.0 + 0.0
= 6.821 mm.

The detailed calculation follows:

Iterated intermediate value [Beta]:

= (1/3)*sqrt(Dc/ej)*tan(a)/(1+1/sqrt(cos(a))-0.15
= (1/3)*sqrt(1391.615/5.615)*tan(30)/(1+1/sqrt(cos(30))-0.15
= 1.3115

Required Thickness [ej]:

= P * Dc * Beta / (2 * f * z) + ci + cext
= 800.0 * 1391.615 * 1.311/(2 * 130.007 * 0.85) + 1.0
= 5.6150 + 1.0000 + 0.0000 = 6.6150 mm.

Required thickness of the cylinder [ecyl]:

= p * Di / ( 2 * f - p )
= 800.0 * 1387.0/( 2 * 130.007 - 800.0 )
= 5.0391 mm.

Required thickness of the cone [econ]:

= p * Di / Cos(a) * ( 2 * f * z - p ) )
= 800.0*1387.0/(cos(30.02)*(2*130.007* 0.85-800.0))
= 5.821 mm.

Required Large End Thickness [e1]:

= max( ecyl, ej, econ ) + ci + co
= max( 5.0391, 5.615, 5.821 )+ 1.0 + 0.0
= 6.821 mm.

Distance [1.4 * L1]:

= 1.4 * sqrt(Dc * ( e1 - ci - cext ))
= 1.4 * sqrt(1391.615 * ( 6.615 - 1.0 - 0.0 ))
= 123.755 mm.

Junction MAWP based upon corroded thickness:

= 892.935 KPa.

Junction MAPnc based upon new thickness:

Allowable Stress used to determine hydrotest pressure:

= 170.8 N./mm2

Small End Cone Calculations:

Note: Analysis based on constant cone thickness and iterating on

on the small end cylinder thickness.

Iterated Mean Diameter of the Cylinder at the Cone Small End [Dc]:
= Di + e + ci
= 310.7 + 0.8862 + 1.0
= 313.590 mm.

Thickness ratio based on final iterated Small End Thickness [s]:

= e2/e1 = 6.5/0.886
= 7.306

Intermediate value [Tau]:

= 1 + sqrt( s * ( 1 + s2 ) /( 2 * cos( Alpha ) ) )
= 1 + sqrt(7.306*(1 + 7.3062)/( 2 * cos(30.019) ) )
= 16.147

Iterated intermediate value [BetaH]:

= 0.4 * sqrt( Dc / e1 ) * tan( Alpha ) / Tau + 0.5
= 0.4 * sqrt( 313.59/0.886 ) * tan( 30.019 )/16.147 + 0.5
= 0.7687

Small End Cylinder Required Thickness [e1]:

= max( 800.0 * 313.6 * 0.77/( 2 * 128.0 * 0.85 ) + 1.0, 2.186 )
= max( 1.886, 2.186)
= 2.186 mm.

Required Length along the Small End Cylinder [L1]:

= sqrt( Dc * ( e1 - ci - cext ) )
= sqrt( 313.59 * ( 2.186 - 1.0 - 0.0 ) )

Actual Outside Diameter Used in Calculation 88.900 mm.

Actual Thickness Used in Calculation 3.200 mm.

Required Thickness of Nozzle Neck due to Internal Pressure:

= P * Di / ( 2 * f * z - P ) + c EN-13445 Equation: 7.4.2:
= 800.0 * 84.5/( 2 * 128.009 * 1.0 - 0.8 ) + 1.0
= 1.265 mm.

EN-13445 Section 9 - Pressure Area Design Method:

Opening to Diameter ratio [d/De]:

= d/De
= 84.5/1400.0
= 0.060

Note: This is a Hillside Nozzle (Offset)

Along surface minimum distance from the knuckle edge to the nozzle edge [dMin]:
= 2.5 * sqrt( ea * r )
= 2.5 * sqrt( 6.5 * 216.0 )
= 93.675 mm.

Axial distance from Knuckle Edge to Nozzle Edge : 160.446 mm.

Axial distance from dMin to Nozzle Edge : 78.911 mm.

The nozzle is not too close to the knuckle. See paragraph 7.7.2.

Crown Radius per 9.5.1 [ris]:

= R + c
= 1120.0 + 1.0
= 1121.00 mm.

Outside Crown Diameter per paragraph 9.4.5.3 [De]:

= 2( ris + ea,s )
= 2( 1121.0 + 6.5 )
= 2255.00 mm.

Credit Distance along the Shell per 9.5.1 [Iso, l's]:

= sqrt(( 2 * ris + ec,s )ec,s )
= sqrt(2*1121.0 + 6.5)6.5 ) (where ec,s is ea,s)
= 120.89 mm.

Note: l's equals Iso if no physical diameter limit value is entered. Otherwise
l's considers the physical diameter limit entry.

Credit Distance Along the Nozzle outside per 9.5.2.4.4 [Ibo]:

= min( sqrt( ( deb - eb )eb ), ho (outside projection) )
= min( sqrt((88.9 - 2.2)2.2, 68.15 )
= 13.81 mm.

Credit Distance Along the Nozzle inside per 9.5.2.4.4 [l'bi]:

= min( hi (inside projection), 0.5 * Ibo)
= min( 0.0, 0.5 * 13.81 )
= 0.00 mm.

Mean radius of Head [rms]:

= 0.5 * 1124.25( asin( 0.04 + sin( 0.354 ) ) + asin( 0.04 - sin( 0.354 )))
= 47.41 mm.

Angle between nozzle centerline and head centerline [psi]:

= asin( Offset / rms )
= asin( 390.0/1124.25 )
= 0.3543 radians (20.298 degrees)

Area due to Nozzle Obliquity [Appsi]:

= 0.5 * dib2 * tan(psi)
= 0.5 * 84.52 * tan( 0.354)
= 13.20 cm2

Pressure area inside shell/head per 9.5-56 [Aps]:

= 0.5 * ris2( l's + a )/( 0.5 * ea,s + ris )
= 0.5 * 1121.02(120.894+47.413)/(0.5 * 6.5 + 1121.0)
