Use imagery, diction, and figures of speech
Objectives:
At the end of the module, the learner is expected to:
1. define imagery, diction, and figures of speech;
2. identify imagery and figures of speech from sample texts;
3. delineate the meaning of texts with imagery, diction, and figures of speech; and
4. craft a short narrative applying imagery, diction, and figures of speech.

 Wake up on time, eat a healthy breakfast, and prepare for a productive day
 Exercise with family members to ensure that the body is in good condition

Preliminaries/Introduction (What I Need to know)
 Given the current circumstances that we are in, travelling for business and recreation
became more restricted for safety purposes. Along this line, ask the learner to verbally
share the place he/she eagerly wants to visit once the pandemic is over. Ask him/her
to describe the place as if he/she is painting a picture in the minds of his/her
listeners using words. Give him/her enough time to creatively express his/her
thoughts about his/her chosen place. Afterwards, pick some of his/her descriptions
which fall under the lesson for the day. From these, you may gradually introduce the
relevance of imagery, diction, and figures of speech as you go along the sharing.
Pre assessment (What I Know)
 Ask the learner to answer the 15-item Multiple Choice pretest on pages 3-4.
Note: Give the learner enough time to read and understand the pre-test.
PROCEDURES
Review/Motivations (What’s In)
 On a scale of 1 to 10 based on his/her level of familiarity with them, with 10 as the
most familiar and 1 as the least or not familiar at all, ask the learner to rank the
given creative writings on page 5. Refer to the given table for interpretation of his/her
level of familiarity.
Initial Activity/Discovery (What’s New)
 To introduce the lesson for this module, ask the learner to categorize the
characteristics and examples of the two types of writing inside the box on page 5.
Discussion of the Topic (What Is It)
 In this part, ask the learner to read Using Imagery, Diction, and Figures of Speech on
pages 6 to 9. Key terms and concepts are defined in this section for better
understanding of the whole lesson.
Note: Explain the topics further by citing other examples to ensure that the learner
understands them fully. Be ready for any possible questions and clarifications from the
learner. If necessary, do not hesitate to contact the subject teacher.
Enrichment Activities (What’s More)
This part contains 3 Independent Activities and 3 Independent Assessments which aim to
help the learner understand the topic further.
 Independent Activity 1: Ask the learner to match the items discussed in the module in
Column A with the definitions in Column B on page 9.
 Independent Assessment 1: Instruct the learner to underline the literary device used

and to identify which figure of speech is used in each of the given statements on page
10.
 Independent Activity 2: On page 10, ask the learner to improve each of the given
statements by using at least three sensory words. Kindly refer to the given example.
 Independent Assessment 2: Ask the learner to read the text on page 11, and then to
list five Imagery and five Figures of Speech present in it.
 Independent Activity 3: On page 11, ask the learner to sketch the scene he/she
visualizes from the text in Independent Assessment 2. The given rubrics shall be used
to grade the learner’s work.
 Independent Assessment 3: On page 12, ask the learner to write a paragraph with at
least five sentences explaining how he/she understood the text in Independent
Assessment 2. Allow him/her to discuss how the Imagery, Diction, and Figures of
Speech used by the writer influenced his/her perception of the text. The given rubrics
shall be used to grade the learner’s work.
Note: Give the learner enough time to read and understand the instructions and texts in
the given activities.
Generalization (What I Have Learned)
 On page 13, instruct the learner to study the graph and to supply the definitions of
the given terms based on what he/she has learned from this module.
Application (What I Can Do)
 As stated on page 13, encourage the learner to recall someone or something that is
very dear to him/her. Afterwards, ask him/her to write a paragraph of at least ten
sentences to describe that person/thing. Instruct the learner to use Imagery, Diction,
and Figures of Speech to write creatively.
Assessment
 Ask the learner to answer the 15-item Multiple Choice pretest on pages 14-15.
Note: Give the learner enough time to read and understand the post-test.
Additional Activity
 Ask the learner to write a short narrative of at least 10 sentences recounting a
memorable event or moment from his/her childhood on page 15. Instruct the learner
to use Imagery, Diction, and Figures of Speech to write creatively. The given rubrics
shall be used to grade the learner’s work.
MODE OF DELIVERY
 Modular Distance Learning: The parent/guardian/authorized representative shall personally submit
the printed module and activity sheets in the respective LGUs. A proof of identity shall be presented
upon the submission/claim of the materials.
 Online Distance Learning: The learner can send outputs to the Google Classroom account provided
by the teacher or to any other platform recommended by the school.

 To weave a smooth connection between the new lesson and what the learner knows,
allow him/her to verbally share his/her favorite poem. Encourage him/her to recite it
and to explain his/her reasons for naming it his/her favorite. Build an atmosphere
where sharing of thoughts and emotions are welcome. You may also share your
favorite poem if you want. Afterwards, carefully introduce the topic by saying that to
come up with such beautiful poems, there are elements, techniques, and devices to
be observed.

 Ask the learner to answer the 15-item Multiple Choice pretest on pages 2-3.

section for better understanding of the whole lesson.

 Independent Activity 2: On page 11, ask the learner to write True if the statement is
correct; if not, underline the word or phrase that makes the statement wrong, then
write the correct word or phrase on the given spaces.
 Independent Assessment 2: Ask the learner to identify the figures of speech used in

 Independent Activity 3: On page 13, instruct the learner to identify the elements of the
poem It Is Her Often by Rolando N. Javier, Jr. by writing the letter of the correct
answer.
 Independent Assessment 3: Ask the learner to answer the questions in not more than
three sentences on page 14.
Note: Give the learner enough time to read and understand the poems in the given
activities. If necessary, help them analyze the meanings of the poems both for
appreciation and learning.
Generalization (What I Have Learned)
 Instruct the learner to fill in the blanks to complete the given summary of the lessons
discussed on page 14.
Application (What I Can Do)
 In three to five sentences each, instruct the learner to analyze and evaluate the
elements of the given poem Dead End by Maica Jill N. de Guzman on pages 15-16.
The learner’s work will be graded based on the given rubric on pages 16-17.
Assessment
 Ask the learner to identify what is being described in each statement on page 17.
Note: Give the learner enough time to read and understand the pre-test.
Additional Activity
 Ask the learner to write a 150-word essay in three paragraphs explaining his/her
analysis of the poem in What I Can Do. Encourage him/her to use Literary
Techniques and Devices in doing so. The learner’s work will be graded based on the
given rubric on page 18.
