READING REVIEW:

Read the passages. Match the sentences to paragraphs A-H. Write the correct paragraph letter in the spaces.

THE FACE OF SEVEN BILLION

A In a world of more than seven billion people, is there a "most typical" person? According
to statistics, there is. He's a 28-year-old Han Chinese man. He lives in a city, can read and
write, and probably works in a hotel or restaurant.

B There are 1.01 men in the world for every woman, so the typical person is male. China,
with over 1.3 billion people, is the country with the largest population. The largest ethnic
group is Han Chinese, and the world's largest age group is 28.
C More people - 51 percent of the world's population - live in a city than in the countryside.
The most common job is in services, such as restaurant and hotel work. Eighty-two percent
of the world's population can read and write.
D
What will the typical person be like in the future? The world's population is growing and
changing all the time. Every second, five people are born and two people die. In 1800,
there were 1 billion people on Earth. Now, there are over 7 billion. By 2045, there may be
9 billion. So the typical person of the future may be very different from today.

A CONNECTED WORLD

E Do you know what your friends watched on TV last night? Do your friends know what
you had for breakfast today? Do you think you're using social media too much?

F Social media is now a part of many people's everyday lives. Estimates suggest that around
2.8 billion people use social media regularly. That's almost 40 percent of the world's
population. But how much time do we really spend on social media? And what exactly do
we spend that time doing?

G Research shows that, worldwide, the average person spends two hours and 19 minutes on
social media each day. People in the Philippines are the most active users. An average
person there spends four hours and 17 minutes a day on social media. Research also
suggests that women use social media more than men. In the United States, for example,
women spend around two hours more per week than men on social media.

H What do most people do on social media? In general, it seems we spend more time looking
at other people's pages than adding to our own. According to one survey, the most
common social media activities are visiting friends' pages, reading their news, and
commenting on their posts.
11. The author asks more than two questions.

12. G The author says women spend more time on social media.

13. D The author compares the past, present, and future.

14. H The author lists three common ways that we use social media.

15. A The author says the age of the "most typical" person.

16. B The author says how many people live in China.

17. F The author says how many of us use social media.

18. C The author says what a little more than four out of five people in the world can do.

READING PRACTICE:

Read the passage. Then look at the statements and write:

TRUE if the statement is the same as information in the

passage FALSE if the statement is different to information in the passage
NOT GIVEN if there is no information about this in the passage

People love social media. The main sites like Facebook, Qzone, Tumblr, Instagram, and Twitter
are very popular and they have billions of users. But at the beginning of the 21st century,
MySpace was also a big site. How big? Here is an example: In 2006, more people in the United
States visited MySpace than Google.

MySpace started in 2003. Young people loved it, and by 2005 it was the most popular social
media site on the Internet. In fact, in that year MySpace was so successful that it tried to buy
Facebook. In the end, however, the people at MySpace decided the $75 million price was too
much. Later, in 2005, a large company called News Corporation paid $580 million to buy
MySpace. At first it continued to grow, and in 2006, it had 100 million users. In 2007, MySpace
had a value of $12 billion.

News Corp wanted to make money, so it showed lots of advertisements to MySpace users.
Unfortunately, that isn't what the users wanted. Also, MySpace was slow and hard to use, and it
didn't add cool new things for its users to do. Other sites like Facebook were better and added
new features that users liked. Over time, fewer and fewer people visited MySpace, and in 2011,
News Corp sold it for just $35 million.

The story of MySpace is interesting. It used to be the most popular social media site, but now
few people use it. In the future, what will happen to other big social media sites like Facebook
and Qzone? Will they make the same mistakes as MySpace, or will they listen to their users and
continue to grow?
19. In 2006, more people visited Facebook than any other site. False

20. MySpace was the first ever social media site. NOT GIVEN

21. MySpace didn't buy Facebook because it was too expensive. TRUE

22. MySpace stopped growing in 2005. NOT GIVEN

23. After 2005, there were fewer ads on MySpace. FALSE

24. News Corp sold MySpace for less than $40 million. FALSE
