mechanism. The severity of the problem is not indicated. In case of any
Is the system operating under steady state conditions?
(Relief, blowdown and transients caused by valve closures are not considered flow
induced vibration problems)
2. High Frequency Acoustic Excitation:
Does the system have choked flow?
(This is not a problem with liquid/multiphase systems)
3. Mechanical Excitation:
Does the system contain or is close to reciprocating/rotating equipment or other
large vibration source (eg diesel engine)?
(Close - in a refinery is defined as a radius equal to twice the maximum length of the
skid)
4. Pulsation – Reciprocating Machinery:
Is there a reciprocating pump or compressor in the system?
5. Pulsation - Rotating Stall:
Does the system have a centrifugal compressor, with a rotating stall (low flow
condition) characteristic?
(This is not a problem with liquid/multiphase systems)
6. Pulsation- Periodic Flow Induced Excitation:
Does the system have any dead leg branches longer than 1 meter?
(This is not a problem with liquid/multiphase systems)

Design Engineer

The line does not contain intrusive fittings (eg. thermowells)

Physical vibrations are visible to naked eye (less than 20 Hz)
The line is not part of compressor manifold piping?
Abnornally large masses, other than normal fittings, valves, etc are not present.
