ABSTRACT

The study examine domestic waste generation and its problems in Okuku town with set
objective to identify the nature of waste generated and its associated health problems in
okuku, examine the frequency of waste generated and disposed in Okuku by individual and
examine the effectiveness of the domestic solid waste management strategies in the study
area. The study adopted a research methodology questionnaires with the sample size of 55
respondents which was pick base on proximities to the dumpsite. The study concluded that
necessary authorities must therefore immediately create a more comprehensive program that
will involve working with the general public to establish waste-recycling facilities, inspiring
residents in all wards by giving out prizes for maintaining clean environments, providing
facilities for disposing of waste, and supporting research initiatives aimed at enhancing the
current waste management systems. In order to change the patterns, educating the general
people will also help them realize how cultural attitudes and proper trash disposal practices
affect the natural ecosystem. The recommendation made that enhance public attitudes
toward waste management and create a clean and welcoming environment that offers people
in Okuku areas good health and comfort, various public education and mobilization tactics
should be implemented.
