Printing Process Chemicals and health effects

The typical printing processes, types of substances associated and their potential health
effects.

Process or activity Type/name of substance Potential health effects

Etching, engraving, Corrosive acids, eg concentrated Skin burns and blisters
platemaking, certain nitric and sulphuric acids, Burns with concentrated hydrofluoric acid
photographic reproduction hydrofluoric acid are very severe
systems, correction of litho Eye damage
plates using deletion fluids
Concentrated photographic Hydroquinone Irritant to eyes but may cause permanent
developer solutions damage
Irritant and sensitising to the skin, may
cause dermatitis
Photographic fixer solutions Acetic acid, acidic salt solutions Irritant to eye/skin
(eg sodium thiosulphate)
Hardener added to Dilute formaldehyde solution Irritant to eye/skin
photographic fixer solutions Frequent contact may lead to skin
sensitisation. Formaldehye may cause
cancer.
Adhesive laminating Isocyanate prepolymers Irritation of airways and lungs (high
Use of polyurethane concentration)
lacquers Occupational asthma could occur even
at low levels
UV and electron beam Reactive acrylates or Corrosive to skin, eyes and mucous
curable inks, varnishes and methacrylates membranes
lacquers Potential for skin sensitisation

High-speed printing - ink Irritation of respiratory tract

misting Potential for occupational asthma
UV lamps for photo Ozone Irritation of the upper respiratory tract
processing, UV curing, Headaches and nausea
corona discharge
Lithographic Dichromates, eg ammonium, Very corrosive
platemaking, Gravure potassium and sodium In high concentrations can cause deep
cylinder preparation, dichromates ulcers
photoengraving, Potential for skin sensitisation
photographic bleaches May cause cancer and may cause harm
to the unborn child
Lithographic fount Alcohols such as Dermatitis
solution, blanket restorers, isopropylalcohol (IPA), white Dizziness, drowsiness and other effects
cleaning solvents spirit on the central nervous system

Lithographic blanket Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and Dermatitis

restorers, cleaning solvents white spirit
Chlorinated hydrocarbons e.g Dizziness, drowsiness and other effects
dichlormethane on the central nervous system
Ketones e.g (MEK), Cardiac arrhythmia (high concentration)
Affects liver and kidneys on long-term
exposure
Gravure / flexographic Ketones (e.g. MEK,), in some Dermatitis

gravure inks
Gravure -Laser engraving Metal fume Irritation of respiratory tract, 'flu-like'
of cylinders illness (metal fume fever depending on
the metal)
Flexographic/ letterpress Perchloroethylene Dizziness, drowsiness and other effects
making plates on the central nervous system via
inhalation
Screen UV-cured inks
Screen Inks Ketones (e.g. cyclohexanone) Dermatitis
Aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. Dizziness, drowsiness and other effects
xylene). Propylene glycol ethers on the central nervous system via
and their esters. inhalation
Phthalates May effect male hormones
Screen Cleaning chemicals Strong alkalis, e.g. concentrated Corrosive to skin, eyes and mucous
sodium or potassium hydroxide membrane
Oxidisers, sodium hypochlorite Dizziness, drowsiness and other effects
Solvents on the central nervous system

Digital (ink-jet) printing Methyl ethyl ketone Abnormal heart rhythm and rate(high

Dyeline printing Ammonium hydroxide Irritation of respiratory tract (as ammonia
vapour)
