COURSE GUIDE FOR Math Ed 7: NUMBER THEORY

Welcome to Math Ed 7: Number Theory. Enrolling in this course means abiding by the University

I. COURSE INTRODUCTION
Math Ed 7: Number Theory is a three (3) unit course for BS Education (BSEd) 2nd year students.
This course intends to facilitate understanding of number theoretic concepts and properties as well as
enhance skills in employing different proving techniques which are useful in most areas in
mathematics. Generally, it entails exploration, seeking of patterns, generating and proving conjectures
as students engage in mathematical investigations. Topics include divisibility, prime numbers, unique
factorization, Diophantine equations, linear congruences, and multiplicative functions.
Proofs of basic theorems shall be presented in an interesting and comprehensive way that can be
read and understood by all students. The required outputs in all lessons are intended to broaden
understanding of the concepts.

II. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES


The goal of this course is to introduce you to the concepts of Number Theory. Specifically, after
finishing this course, you should be able to:

1. Prove and solve number theoretic propositions and problems by applying fundamental concepts and
principles in number theory;

2. Recognize and/or generate number theory concepts and properties from inferring patterns embedded
in problems and real-world phenomena;
3. Generate and communicate results of a mathematical investigation on a number theoretic conjecture
carried out using ICT and research;
4. Design and use activity sheets for selected number theory topics in a teaching demonstration.

III. TARGET LEARNERS AND PREREQUISITES


The target learners for this course are 2nd year students of BSEd Mathematics. The enrolled
students taking this course are expected to have wide understanding in the following subject matter:
Algebra and Discrete Mathematics.

IV. MODE OF DELIVERY


The university identified three (3) types of learners, namely: students with A. good internet access
(able to participate in synchronous activity); B. poor to fair internet access (able to participate in
asynchronous activities only); and C. no internet connection.

Hence, the table below shows the mode of deliveries for each type of learners:

V. COURSE STRUCTURE & SCHEDULE


Math Ed 7: Number Theory is a three (3) unit course for BS Education (BSEd) 2nd year students
with corresponding contact hours of 1 hour per unit course. Consequently, the course has three (3)
contact hours per week.
The subject is divided into six (6) chapters/units which is further divided into twenty – two (22)
topics. Each topic is provided with lecture/module posted in a virtual room/LMS (Google classroom)
that can be accessed by the students any time. Every topic has several discussion materials such as

lecture video, pdf files, powerpoint presentation and link for additional readings. Learning activities and
exercises are also included in the module. The student is expected to finish all twenty-two (22) topics
within the 18-week period, starting on August 15, 2022 until December 18 , 2022. The table below
shows your weekly activity for the whole semester; kindly follow on a weekly basis to ensure activities
and deadlines are met.

VI. COURSE REQUIREMENTS / ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES


There will be two forms of assessment: formative and summative. The formative assessment,will be a
Self-Assessment quizzes at the end of every topic/module. It is intended to support and validate the acquired
learning and in each topic; this will not be recorded or graded. On the other hand, the summative assessment will all
be graded and recorded. It will be based on:

b. Contribution/participation on the forum
c. Passing score on Midterm and Final Exams

Rubrics will be used for the evaluation of your outputs whenever applicable and can be accessed on the course site.

VII. GRADING SYSTEM


System of Computing Grades :

Attendance and Class Participation – 20%


Examination (Midterm/Final Examination) – 40%
Written/Activity Outputs/Performance Tasks – 40%

Midterm Grade = Attendance and Class Participation (20%) + Midterm Examination (40%) +
Written/Activity Outputs/Performance Tasks (40%)

Tentative Final Grade = Attendance and Class Participation (20%) + Final Examination (40%) +
Written/Activity Outputs/Performance Tasks (40%)

Final Grade = Mid-term grade (1/3) + [(Tentative Finals x 2) + Midterm]/3

VIII.LEARNING RESOURCES

To aid your learning, resources will be provided along the duration of the course and it will be available
on the course site/LMS. However, those with poor internet connection may schedule time to connect to
university Wi-Fi and download all term materials. The learning resources are:

1. Modules

Modules will be prepared per lesson/topic and will be uploaded in the Google classroom; hard copy
will be available at the Education Department Office. Each module contains learning content
exercises and worksheets. Students are required to read and understand the modules and work on
the assigned task. Punctuality of submission of the completed task will be credited (see Course
Structure and Schedule for deadline dates)

2. Other Learning Resources

This course is not limited to the Instructor’s suggested/given learning resources. Students may use
other resources available as long as proper citation and acknowledgement are followed. Videos
and tutorials may be available on YouTube, Vlogs and other learning sites. Software such as
mobile applications with direct relevance to the course is also encouraged.

3. Additional Reading Materials

Reading materials in the form of technical or journal papers are also encouraged. Students are
required to learn how to do mathematical investigation as part of the program learning outcome.

X. OTHER GUIDELINES/NETIQUETTE

To stimulate greater independence of learning for students as part of lifelong learning; the students
are expected to abide and cooperate with the Instructor throughout the semester. The following will be
the course policy:

1. Students enrolled in this course automatically agreed to abide by the University Flexible Learning
policy, and the Academic Integrity Policy (Honor Code). In other words, Students are expected to
be responsible and demonstrate honesty and moral behavior in any form of academic setting.
Plagiarism and cheating in any form are punishable and subjected to disciplinary committees.

2. Any form of bullying is never acceptable. Students are prohibited to be involved or act in any
form of cyber-bullying (flaming, stalking, harassment and stalking). Academic frustration of
students can be addressed properly with the help of the Course Instructor and/or Course
Adviser. Student/s caught will face University Disciplinary Committees.

▪ Flaming: Online fights using electronic messages with angry and vulgar language.
▪ Harassment and stalking: Repeatedly sending cruel, vicious, and/or threatening messages. Even
one message could constitute cyber-bullying depending on the circumstances. Oftentimes when
this occurs instructors are unprepared to react and where to seek support.
▪ Mobbing: This is a group of students cyber-bullying a particular instructor/professor

3. Participation in Course discussion forums are not required for Category C students. However,
the course instructor may update the students from time to time. Students under Category A
and B are expected to be respectful and polite with one another during discussion forums.

4. Students are required to update the course instructor via email, phone call or short message
service (sms). Other concerns, may inform the course professor for an appointment following
the general health protocol.
