Instructions:

• Answer any four questions.

• Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.
• Use of scientific calculator is permitted.

1. a A mild steel rod 5 mm diameter passes centrally through a copper tube of [6]
internal diameter 25 mm and thickness 4 mm. The composite section is 600
mm long and their ends are rigidly connected. It is then acted upon by an
axial tensile load of 50 kN. Find the stresses and deformation in steel and
copper. Take Ecu = 100 GPa and Es = 200 GPa.
b A bar of certain material 50 mm square is subjected to an axial pull of 150 [4]
kN. The extension over a length of 100 mm is 0.05 mm and decrease in each
side is 0.0065 mm. Find Poisson’s ratio and elastic constants
(𝑖) 𝐸 (𝑖𝑖) 𝐺 (𝑖𝑖𝑖) 𝐾.
2. Differentiate between a point load and a uniformly distributed load. [2+8]
A cantilever of 14 m span carries loads of 6 kN, 4 kN, 6 kN and 4 kN at 2 m,
4 m, 7 m and 14 m respectively from the fixed end. It also has a uniformly
distributed load of 2 kN/m run for the length between 4 m and 10 m from the
fixed end. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams.
3. a A rectangular beam 100 mm wide and 250 mm deep is subjected to a [5]
maximum shear force of 50 kN. Determine:
i. Average shear stress
ii. Maximum shear stress
iii. Shear stress at a distance of 25 mm above neutral axis.
b A simply supported cast-iron square beam of 800 mm length and 15 x 15 mm [5]
in section fails on applying a load of 360 N at the midspan. Find the maximum
uniformly distributed load that can be applied safely to a 40 mm wide, 75 mm
deep and 1.6 m long cantilever made of the same material.
4. a A solid steel shaft has to transmit 75 kW at 200 rpm. Taking allowable shear [5]
stress as 70 N/mm2, find suitable diameter for the shaft, if the maximum
torque transmitted at each revolution exceeds the mean by 30%.
b A hollow alloy tube 6 m long external diameter of 50 mm and internal [5]
diameter of 30 mm was found to extend 2.98 mm under a tensile load of 50
kN. Find the buckling load for the tube, when used as a strut with both ends
pinned. Also, find the safe load taking a factor of safety of 4.
5. A beam of length 𝑙 and hinged at the two ends carries a clockwise couple 𝑀 [10]
at a distance 𝑎 from the left end. Determine the slope at each end and the
deflection at the point of application of the couple.
Also deduce the expressions for slopes and deflection if the couple acts at the
midspan of the beam.
