During the symposium that we have with the CDRRMO, I learned that there are
two types of disaster and that is man-made and natural disaster. The man-made
disasters have an element of human intent, negligence, or error involving a failure of a
man-made system, as opposed to natural disasters resulting from natural hazards.
Meanwhile, the natural disaster is characterized by the abnormal intensity of a natural
agent like flood, mudslide, earthquake, avalanche, drought. According to them, the
Philippines is ranked as the 3rd but currently at top 9 most disaster prone in the world. It
is because the Philippines is within the pacific ring of fire where the most active
volcanoes are located around the pacific ocean. With this kind of environment or
surroundings, we are prone to natural disaster such typhoons, tsunamis and mostly
earthquake. The cause earthquakes are the sudden movements of fault line within the
earth’s surface. According to them, there are fault line located in our local city which is
the Davao city. There are roughly 60 baranggays will be affected and are in danger if
strong earthquake will occur. They are using seismograph to figure out the motion of the
ground during earthquake and it is located around the Davao city. But the most
important they taught us is that during the earthquake, the first thing to do is to calm
yourself to avoid panicking and mental block. Use the basic duck, cover and hold and
always pray to God for safety.
