ACTIVITY 1: Title: “Let’s start Drawing”

Procedure:

1. In a bond paper, illustrate the structure of waxes, phospholipids, and steroids.

2. 2. Your illustration should identify the differences between the structure of waxes, phospholipids, and
steroids.

 Waxes are esters made of an alcohol chain and a fatty acid chain.
 Many plants have wax-covered leaves to prevent water loss.
 Steroids are characterized by a 4 ring structure.
 Steroids are found in the cell membrane, where they influence the membrane’s fluidity.
 They can also act as hormones in the body.
 Phospholipids have the same basic structure as triglycerides, except that one of the fatty
acids groups is replaced with a phosphate group.
 Phospholipids are a part of the cell membrane.

Activity 2:

Direction: Using a Venn Diagram, give at least three differences and two similarities of fats and oils.

Fats

Fats are molecules made up of a fatty acid chain with a glycerol head.
There are several different kinds of fats determined by the number of carbon atoms in the fatty acid chain
and solid at room temperature.

Fats and Oils are one of the 3 macro- nutrients.

Are composed of chains of molecules called fatty acids that are composed mainly of carbon atoms.

Oil

Oils are made up of a combination of different fats in varying concentrations.

Oil has a higher proportion of unsaturated fatty acids which have a bent structure

Oil are liquid at room temperature

Activity 3:
Answer the following questions as best as you can.
1. What are the different classifications of lipids?
 Non-saponifiable Lipids
 Saponifiable Lipids

2. The molecule below is a

a. Fatty acid
b. Triglyceride
c. Wax
d. Steroid
2. Is there a hydrophobic area?
a. YES
b. NO

3. Label the following fatty acids as saturated or unsaturated.

__Saturated_ __Unsaturated__

4. What classification of lipids tends to be liquid at room temperature? ______OILS_______

5. In the human body, triglycerides are primarily stored in specialized fat cells, called _ADIPOCYTES_
6. _GLYCEROL_ is a small organic molecule with three hydroxyl (OH) groups.
7. The double bonds in unsaturated fatty acids can exist in two configurations, what do we call when the two
hydrogens associated with the bond are on the same side? CIS CONFIGURATION
8. Like soap, which of the following molecules is also amphophilic – having both a hydrophilic and
hydrophobic end?
a. Steroids b. water c. waxes d. phospholipids
9. FATTY ACIDS consists of a long hydrocarbon chain attached to a carboxyl group.

Activity 4:
Instructions: Based on your readings of the above notes, answer the following questions as best as you can.
Write TRUE if the statement is correct, otherwise, identify what makes the statement incorrect and write the
correct word/s that describes the statement. Write your answers in a clean ¼ sheet of paper with the date
written on the upper right of your paper.
