Mangroves Forest

OBSERVATION

Mangrove Tree and Water Swamp

 The darkness of the water swamp was caused by the mangroves canopy, filters the
sunlight and the roots traps the sediment. Another is, it is because of the orangish tannin
pigments that derived from decomposing organic matter in the mangrove area, and the
organic matter itself that was suspended in the water.

 Mangroves can actually live in the salt water as the roots under the water portion can
filter the salt out of the ocean. And when the tides go out the roots can switch functions,
they absorb/ acquire oxygen by opening small pores on the roots, which we called the
lenticel/s. This process is vital to their survival as the plants needs to metabolize, the
sediments and organic debris that’s gathers at the base of the roots decomposed which
creates an anoxic environment.

 Lenticels
 Pores in the stem of a woody plant that allows gas exchange between the atmosphere and
the internal tissues.
 The functions of these pores are to permit the exchange of gases between the
environment and the internal tissue spaces of the organs. They permit the entrance of
oxygen and simultaneously the output of carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Mangroves Roots and Small Fish

 The mangroves roots serve as the shelter of small fish, because it helps them to avoid
predators, as well as a nursery area for the coral reef fish.

 Coral Reef Fish

 Fishes that live amongst or in close relation to coral reefs.
ANIMALS THAT USED THE MANGROVE TO ROOT THEM SELVES AS THEIR HOME
 Sponges – the members of the phylum Porifera, are a basal animal clade as a sister of the
diploblast. They are multicellular organisms that have bodies full of pores and channels
allowing water to circulate through them, consisting of jelly-like mesohyl sandwiched
between two thin layers of cells.
 Barnacles- is a type of arthropod constituting the subclass Cirripedia in the subphylum
Crustacea, and is hence related to crabs and lobsters. They are exclusively marine, and
tend to live in shallow and tidal waters, typically, in erosive settings.
 Crab- these crab lives among the mangroves, and may belong to different species and
even families. They have been shown to be ecologically significant in many ways. They
keep much of the energy within the forest by burying and consuming leaf litter.
Mangrove Habitat
- Serves a really important function to marine ecosystem.
- Healthy mangrove can reduce erosion.
- They can protect the shoreline from the impact of storm.
- It can greatly reduce the amount of sediment that runs off of land and ends up on the
coral reefs.
