Fault diagnosis should be performed on a machine that is at normal operating temperature, and at an ambient temperature of
+20°C (77 °F).

1. Check the air conditioning compressor belt's tension and condition.

2. Check that the cab's recirculation filter is whole and clean.
Clean or change as necessary.
3. Check that the evaporator and condenser are clean and allow a free flow of air.
4. Check that the evaporator is well secured in place and undamaged. Make sure that the other seals in and around the
AC system are in good condition.
5. Set the temperature controls to min. and the recirculation controls to max.
6. Start the engine, speed approx. 1000 rpm.
7. Start the AC system and set the ventilation fan to max. speed.
8. Check that the air conditioning compressor magnet clutch is in the engaged position, i.e. the hub rotates. Listen so that
the magnet clutch engages.
9. Check that the heating control valve closes the water flow through the radiator. Use your hand to feel whether the
pipes or hoses are hot.
10. Check that any air dampers are whole and that the foam seals form a seal with the dampers.
11. Check the function of the thermostat. When the compressor in the engagement and disengagement cycle disengages,
the temperature measured at the compressor's suction pipe should be 1 ±1 °C (32 — 35.6 °F) when the ambient
temperature is +25 °C (77 °F) or lower.
12. Check the pressure in the system using a pressure gauge kit at the filling station, see: Refrigerant, filling incl vacuum
pumping.

Diagnosis of abnormal pressure gauge operation

NOTE!
The pressure gauge taps must be fully screwed in

NOTE!
The grey area on the pressure gauges indicates the normal area.
Figure 1

A = Low B = High Possible cause

pressure side pressure
side
Too high Normal or
too low 1. The compressor clutch slips or does not engage
2. The expansion valve is blocked in the open position. If the climate control unit is
equipped with a compressor with suction pressure regulator, small but quick pressure
changes occur on the low pressure side.
3. The compressor is damaged

Too low High

pressure too 1. The thermostat is defective
high or 2. The expansion valve is closed. i.e. blocked or clogged
normal 3. The receiver drier is saturated with moisture
4. Stoppage in the refrigerant line between filter and expansion valve

Low pressure High

normal or pressure 1. Inflow of hot air into the evaporator or into the passenger compartment
too low normal 2. Inflow of hot water into the heating system's heat exchanger
3. Build-up of ice in the evaporator

Low pressure High

high or pressure too 1. Possible normal operating pressure at high ambient temperature (> 43 °C — (109 °F))
normal high 2. Excessive refrigerant filling (30–35% is the prescribed amount)
3. Contaminants in the condenser
4. Stoppage in the high pressure side between compressor, condenser and filter.
IMPORTANTthe stoppage can only be in the area around the service connection for
high pressure. Not on the low pressure side

Low pressure High

normal or pressure too 1. Possible normal operating pressure at low ambient temperature >5 °C — (41 °F))
too low low 2. Insufficient refrigerant amount, 70 - 75% below normal amount
3. The expansion valve is closed (blocked) or clogged
4. Stoppage on the low or high pressure side between the filter and evaporator
5. Stoppage between compressor and condenser and filter, however, the high pressure
side

The low pressure and high

pressure gauges show the 1. Defective compressor
same value 2. A possible fault cause is incorrect alignment of the pulleys, slipping drive belt
3. The compressor magnet clutch slides or is defective
4. Defective compressor
