Objectives
• Define a "model" and its use in answering questions about a system,
What is a system?
• A system is a function that maps signals from its domains into signals in its
range.
• System is a process that generates signals or transforms signals from one
form to another.
• A person reading a book aloud is a system that converts the printed page
signal into a sound signal.
• An MP3 player is a system that converts such a sequence of bits into a stereo
sound.

Mathematical Models:
Modeling in the Frequency Domain
• The first step in developing a mathematical model is
to apply the fundamental physical laws.
– Kirchoff’s Voltage Law - The sum of voltages around a
closed path is zero.
– Kirchoff’s Current Law - The sum of currents flowing
from a node is zero.
– Newton’s Laws
- The sum of forces on a body is zero (considering mass
times acceleration as a force).
- The sum of moments on a body is zero.
• The model describes the relationship between the
input and the output of the dynamic system.
