Lesson 1.1
Reading and Writing Numbers up to
10 000 000 in Symbols and in Words

Fig. 1. Sample Check

Introduction
Numbers are not only presented as numerals or digits; they can also be expressed in words
and may even be expanded. We commonly see this in a check. A check is a document that
directs a bank to pay a specific amount to the person the check has been issued. The
monetary amount written in a check is not only expressed in numbers but also in words. This
is to prevent tampering of the document as numerals alone can easily be tampered.

In this lesson, we will learn how to read and write numbers up to 10 000 000 in symbols and
words.

Test Your Prerequisite Skills

Before you get started, answer the following items on a separate sheet of paper. This will help
you assess your prior knowledge and practice some skills that you will need in studying this
lesson. Show your complete solution.

1. Give the place value of the underlined digit of the following numbers:
a. 78 291
b. 87 118
c. 65 098
d. 239 172

2. Give the value of the underlined digit of the following numbers:

a. 21 910
b. 72 391
c. 16 082
d. 611 290

DepEd Competencies
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to do the following:

● Visualize numbers up to 10 000 000 with emphasis on numbers 100 001–

10 000 000 (M5NS-Ia-1.5).

● Read and write numbers up to 10 000 000 in symbols and in words

(M5NS-Ia-9.5).

Warm-Up!

Look, Read, and Write

Materials
● paper
● pen
● strips of paper
● board
● chalk or marker
● jar or box

Instructions
1. Form groups of five members each.
2. Place the jar (or box) on the teacher’s table.
3. Each group will write five numbers (between 10
000 and 1 000 000) on strips of paper.
4. Roll the strips of paper and collect them all in the
jar.

3
Mathematics

Grade 5 • Unit 1: Building Number Sense: Whole Numbers

5. The members of each group will take turns in picking a strip of paper from the jar.
Then, one member will read the chosen number and write it in words on the board.
6. Every group that correctly reads and writes all numbers given to them shall receive a
reward.

Learn about It!

The place value of a number tells the position of each digit.
The value of a digit in a given number is the product of the digit and its place value.

Shown below are the place values of the digits in 14 414 774.

Ten Hundred Ten

Millions Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Millions Thousands Thousands

1 4 4 1 4 7 7 4

The digit 4 can be found in the millions place, the hundred thousands place, thousands place,
and the ones place.

A number can be written in three ways: standard form, word form, and expanded form. The
number 14 414 774 is written in standard form.

Essential Question
How will you read numbers up to 10 000 000?

Mathematics

Grade 5 • Unit 1: Building Number Sense: Whole Numbers

Reading and Writing Numbers in Words

Step 1: Group the number into three digits starting from the right and put a space in
between. This is to separate the numbers by class or period.

Millions Thousands Ones

Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones

1 4 4 1 4 7 7 4

Step 2: From the left, read the number per group, just like reading a two-digit or three-
digit number, and then include the class name.

First group: fourteen million

Millions Thousands Ones

Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones

𝟏 𝟒 4 1 4 7 7 4

Second group: four hundred fourteen thousand

Millions Thousands Ones

Mathematics

Grade 5 • Unit 1: Building Number Sense: Whole Numbers

Third group: seven hundred seventy-four

Millions Thousands Ones

Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones

1 4 4 1 4 𝟕 𝟕 𝟒

Take note that in the last group, we do not include the class name ones.

Therefore, 14 414 774 is written in words as fourteen million four hundred fourteen
thousand seven hundred seventy-four.

Essential Question
How will you write numbers up to 10 000 000 in symbol and in words?

Writing Numbers in Expanded Form

Recall that value is the product of the digit and its place value.

Ten Hundred Ten

Millions Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Millions Thousands Thousands

1 4 4 1 4 7 7 4
10 000 000 1 000 000 100 000 10 000 1 000 100 10 1

Value 𝟏𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟒 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟏𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟒 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟕𝟎𝟎 𝟕𝟎 𝟒

6
Mathematics

Grade 5 • Unit 1: Building Number Sense: Whole Numbers

In 14 414 774, the values of the digit 4 are:

● 4 × 1 000 000 = 4 000 000
● 4 × 100 000 = 400 000
● 4 × 1 000 = 4 000
● 4×1 = 4

The values were taken by multiplying 4 by its corresponding place value.

To write a number in expanded form, express the number as the sum of the values of the
digits of the number.

Ten Hundred Ten

Millions Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Millions Thousands Thousands

1 4 4 1 4 7 7 4

10 000 000 1 000 000 100 000 10 000 1 000 100 10 1

10 000 000 + 4 000 000 + 400 000 + 10 000 + 4 000 + 700 + 70 + 4

Therefore, the expanded form of 14 414 774 is

𝟏𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 + 𝟒 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 + 𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 + 𝟏𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 + 𝟒 𝟎𝟎𝟎 + 𝟕𝟎𝟎 + 𝟕𝟎 + 𝟒
