A slurry is a homogenous mixture of fine aggregate, stable-mix grade emulsion (anionic) or a modified emulsion,
water and filler (cement). Slurry seals are used as maintenance treatment and provide a homogenous texture for
new roads
The design of the slurry is such that the mixture is easily applied by hand by rubber squeegees or by mechanical
spreaders. The Slurry mixture will allow it to flow readily into surface voids and interstices.
The Slurry seal after curing will have sufficient binder not to ravel but stable enough to carry wheel loads without
bleeding and deformation.
A Slurry seal is normally used for Re-Sealing an existing Surface that requires a further extension on the life span of
the existing road.
The thickness application is from 4mm -10mm. Application of 4mm-6mm will be done in a single application, while
8mm-10mm will be done in double application.
MATERIAL REQUIRED
Aggregates
The most suitable aggregates are crusher dust or plaster sand. The grading of the material is based on where the
slurry is to be applied and on its purpose.
Fillers
Cement acts as a catalyst to keep mix consistent and to improve the flow and workability of the slurry
Water
The addition of water is necessary in order to obtain the correct slurry consistency
Emulsion
Emulsion type based bitumen Stable graded anionic emulsion SS60 80/100 penetration grade with modified binder.
Slurry Design
Aggregate 72%
Filler 2%
Emulsion 13%
Water 13%

PLANT REQUIREMENTS
LABOUR REQUIREMENTS
Below is the typical composition of a Slurry seal team necessary to lay 1 500 – 2000 m² per day depending on the
activities of the day.
CONSTRUCTION
Site Preparation
The surface must be thoroughly swept of all dust and any loose material. The road surface should be cleaned of all
deleterious and surface dampened slightly just prior to application of slurry

Application
The slurry mixture flows out of the rear of the truck and onto the pavement within the confines of a box attached to
the rear of the truck. The box serves to distribute the slurry mixture over the pavement. Workers with squeegees
follow behind and assist in spreading the mixture, correcting areas not properly covered, and keeping the mixture off
of concrete improvements such as kerbs. You can also pull a wet harness cloth on areas where the slurry box has
not covered
Quality Control
Weather Limitations have to be observed such as very cold weather, High temperatures and rain.
Seals need approximately 4 hours to set properly under favourable weather conditions. Traffic should not be allowed
onto the seal until such time as it is fully set, particularly on areas where turning and/or stop start actions occur and
traffic can be allowed to drive.
