Learning Activity Sheet (LAS)

Mathematics 8 (Quarter 3, Week 1)

Name: ____________________________________
Grade & Section: ______________________________ Date: _______________

Introductory Concept
A typical Mathematical System has the following four parts, the
underlined terms, defined terms, axioms and postulate and theorems.
Undefined and defined terms are all about vocabulary, and axioms and/or
postulate and theorems are all about principles.
This Learning Activity Sheet will help you understand more on
previously learned topics in geometry specially on mathematical system. It
introduces term that we’ll be used in order to help us solve problems and
prove scenarios.

Learning Skills from MELCs

Illustrates the need for an axiomatic structure of a mathematical system
in general, and Geometry in particular: (a) defined terms; (b) undefined
terms; (c) postulates; and (d) theorems (M8GE-IIIa-I, M8GE-IIIa-c-1)

Activity Proper

Some undefined terms in Geometry

 Point – a location (dot) that has no length, width and height.
- has no dimension.
 Plane – set of points joined together to form a flat surface; the plane
can extend without end in all directions.
- two dimensional area in geometry.
 Line- has infinite points. It has no width and no thickness

Examples:
Activity 1

A. Tell whether each of the following suggests a point, a line or a plane.

1. top of the box
2. cover of the book
3. a taut clothes line
4. star in the sky
5. corner of a room

B. Use the figures to answer each of the questions below

1. What are the given points?

2. What is the name of the line?
3. What is the name of the plane?

Some Defined Terms in Geometry

 Ray- is a subset of a line with one end point.
 Segments- is a subset of a line with two end points.
 Midpoint- the point on a line segment that divides the segment
into two equal parts
 Collinear- are points that lie on the same line.
 Coplanar- are points or lines that lie in the same plane
 Parallel lines- are lines that do not intersect or never meet.
 Perpendicular lines- are lines that intersect and form a right
angle.
Examples:
Activity 2
Describe a mathematical system by changing a word in the statement to
describe the defined terms in geometry.

1. A segment is a subset of a line that has one endpoint/s.

2. Coplanar points are points on the same line.

3. Noncoplanar lines that do not intersect are parallel lines.

4. Collinear points are points on the same plane.

5. Perpendicular lines are two lines intersecting at acute angles.
