Case #5: Siemens

1. Identify the problem in this case study. What management, organization, and

technology factors contributed to the problem?

The issue was maximizing efficiency. To siemens improvement and quality of its

business processes is very important. In the past they would manage business processes

manually. Management believed they knew exactly how to be efficient int his regard, so

m
er as
co
it was difficult to convince them that there is a way more efficient. Organization wise,

eH w
they had individual supervisors who were responsible but if there was a minor

o.
rs e
inconvenience there was no way to find out how they effected overall operations. They
ou urc
were not using any advanced technology since it was all done manually, this put them at a
o

big disadvantage.

2. Describe the capabilities of process mining software Was this an effective solution?

Explain your answer.

Process mining software has many capabilities that can help businesses grow more
ar stu

efficient. Celonis analyzes many causes for “deviations. And performance loss,
sh is

highlighting the issues which have the greatest impact on process performance.” (Laudon
Th

& Laudon, p.471). If there is nor model already created the software will create one for

you, it will also identify discrepancies and their possible causes by comparing event logs

to existing models. I believe it was a very effective solution, because the software

provides a very big amount of data and solutions to the business that individual people

working manually may not have found or would have taken a long time to find.

3. How did process mining change decision making at Siemens?

Decision making at Siemens became much more efficient and precise. The data provided

now was using real time data instead of providing an analysis months after. That would

have been the case if the company had still been running everything manually. However,

since the technological advancements the accuracy of the data has become much more

precise making it easier for decision makers to do their jobs.

4. What management, organization, and technology issues need to be addressed when

implementing process mining systems?

m
Managers must understand that using process mining will be much different to how they

er as
co
were handling business before, but it is much more efficient. It is very useful and will

eH w
only help the company grow and become more efficient. Organizationally some

o.
rs e
ou urc
employees must be ready to change the way they do their jobs, because instead of it being

manual it will now all be automatic using technology. Technologically there will be many
o

issues that may arise such as; the learning curve for employees, setting up the IT

department to help employees, etc. The business processes will need to change a lot

however it will be worth it in the end because of the increase in efficiency.
