PROJECT TITLE DC GENERATOR TESTING (ARMATURE & STATOR TESTING)

OBJECTIVE The objectives of the session are:

1) To check the functionality state of a DC Generator.

2) To expose student on the correct tools to be used on DC
Generator testing.
3) To affectively guide students to abide with the steps and
procedures in DC Generator testings.

TOOLS AND • Growler tester of suitable size for the generator

EQUIPMENT armatures.
• Hacksaw blade.
• Multimeters (Ohmmeter and Voltmeter)

TESTING MATERIAL • DC Generator’s Armature of different sizes.

• DC Generator’s Stator/Yoke (complete with field
windings)

REFERENCES • Growler Tester User Manual.

• DC Generator’s Lecture Notes.
• Ref. Video 1: https://youtu.be/eUzKAxZ9pJ8

SAFETY ALWAYS ENSURE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE FOLLOWED

• Specific safety practices when using the GROWLER
TESTER must be followed (Refer to the manual).

OVERALL PROJECT 1. Prompt & successful completion of the project work

GRADING (20%), which include
• Safety Attitude & Teamwork (10%)
• Proper usage of tools (10%)
2. Written Report (80%), which include complete results
and discussions.

PROCEDURES PREPARATION
1) Students will be devided into groups.
2) Equipments to be positioned on each table (stator,
armature and multimeter).

IDENTIFY PARTS
1) Students must identify the main parts available and their
functions. Good photos are required for the report.
2) Parts to be identified and will be tested in this project:
Stator windings, main magnetic poles and the armature
assembly which also include the armature core,
windings, commutator and the shaft.

VISUAL INSPECTIONS
1) Check the main parts (stator and armature) for any sign
of physical damages, such as broken wires, pitting, burn
marks and overheating etc.
2) Check the mica insulation between commutator
segments. It should be below the height of the
commutator segments.
3) Count and record the total number of segments.

TESTINGS & MEASUREMENTS

A- STATOR (FIELD WINDING):
1) Short-to-Ground Test (Finding Leakage Current)
• Using calibrated ohmmeter, check for continuity
between the unpainted surface of the Yoke and the
input terminals.
• Record the resistance values.
2) Open Circuit Test (Finding discontinuity / broken wires)
• Using calibrated ohmmeter, check for continuity
between the input terminals.
• Record the resistance value.

B- ARMATURE ASSEMBLY (Refer to the video):

1) Short-to-Ground Test (Finding Leakage Current).
• Using calibrated ohmmeter or Growler Tester, check
for continuity between the commutator segments and
the shaft.
• Record the results.
2) Short-between-Windings Test (Finding Short Circuits)
• Use the hack-saw blade with the Growler ON.
• Record the results.
3) Open Circuit Test (Finding discontinuity / broken wires)
• Using calibrated ohmmeter, check for continuity
between the commutator segments.
• Record the resistance value.
• Do the same using voltmeter test between
commutator segments, and record the voltage values.

REPORT WRITING • One report per group.

• Report can be hand-written or typed.
• Report MUST include (important guidelines):
a) Objectives
b) Results - must be in a Table form, starts from the
Visual Inspections according to the Procedures.
c) Discussions - theoretical discussion of the results in
essay form.
d) Conclusions - made from the discussion and in
accordance to the original objectives of the project.
Note: Report must have pictures/illustrations/diagrams
with complete captions, cross-references and citations etc.
(where necessary).
