Informative Outline

Topic: The benefits of drinking water

General Purpose: To Inform

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the many benefits of increasing one’s water

intake.

Thesis: From health benefits to helping a person look and feel better, the benefits

of increasing one’s water intake are endless.

I. Introduction
a. Attention Getter : We have been told since a young age to drink water
because it is important to our health, but not everyone
knows all the health benefits that come with drinking the
recommended amount of water every day. This essential
part of our body plays a vital role in the upkeep of nearly
all the main organ systems in our body, and the benefits
have been accepted by medical experts around the world.

b. Reason to Listen :

The benefits found by researchers of increasing a person’s

water intake don’t just apply to these researchers; these
benefits apply to you and me, along with everyone else in
this room and around the world.

c. Thesis Statement : From health benefits to helping a person to look and feel

better, the benefits of increasing one’s water intake are

endless.

d. Credibility Statement :For as long as I can remember, I have always been so

curious and interested in anything that I could do that was

beneficial to my well-being; not just physically, but

mentally and emotionally too. I have tried all kinds of

things from variations of workouts and diets to lose weight

or gain muscle, to meditation and yoga, to taking self-care

days, and most recently, drinking more water. Over the

course of the last few weeks, I have also been doing some

intense research into the topic through the database.

e. Preview of Main Points

i. First, I will discuss a few of the ways in which drinking more water can

positively impact your joint and muscle health.

ii. Second, I will discuss how drinking more water can benefit your immune

system and improve brain function.

iii. Lastly, I will discuss the ways in which increasing your water intake can

benefit your physical well-being while also promoting your mental

health.

II. From health benefits to helping a person look and feel better, the benefits of

increasing one’s water intake are endless.

1.
a. Water can aid the body by improving and promoting the function of your organs,

so by increasing your fluid intake, your joints will be more lubricated, and you

will have healthier muscles.

Water is vital to our muscles in our everyday lives, but it is

especially important to our bodies when we work out. This is

because water carries out toxins and other metabolic waste

products that are produced within our bodies as we work out. This

process allows your muscles to replenish themselves with clean,

fresh water rather than water that is tainted with toxins and

harmful waste products. If these toxic waste products are not

flushed out of your muscles by water, muscle cramps may be a

side effect of this.

2. Joshua Duvauchelle, in his 2017 article “thirsty FOR HEALTH?

The surprising ways water transforms our wellness,” stated that the

cartilage that sits between our bones and acts as a cushion to

protect them, is actually composed of between 60 and 85 percent

water (Duvauchelle, 2017). Due to the fact that the majority of

cartilage in our body is composed of water, this goes to show just

how important water is to our joint health. If we are lacking in our

water intake, these cushions can deplete, which can lead to severe

joint pain and discomfort.

Transition: With this being said, not only can increasing your water intake improve

the function of your joints and muscles, but it can also impact your

immune system and your brain function.

b. By increasing your water intake, you can be promoting a healthy immune system,

all while positively impacting the function of your brain.

1.
Water is responsible for flushing dead bacteria out of our bodies

and transporting healthy immune cells to where they are needed.

In this way, a substantial amount of water intake can really help

your body to fight off diseases and infections to keep you healthy,

whereas if your body is lacking the water it needs, you are more

likely to get sick.

2. According to Acer Niyazi, Dundar Mehemet Sait, and

BastepeGray Serap in their 2018 article “What does the water

inside the brain tell us? Diffusion tensor imaging,” they claim that

the human brain is composed of about 75 percent water (Niyazi,

Sait, & Serap, 2018). With this being said, studies have shown

that when your brain is hydrated, you are more likely to be focused

on the task ahead of you, you will generally have more energy, and

you are more likely to think more creatively. If you feel like you

are exhausted or if you are writing a paper and you just can’t come

up with that last line that you need, your body might simply be

lacking water.

Transition: Although these benefits directly impact our physical health, there are also

some benefits of drinking water that are associated with a person’s mental

health.

c. A person can improve their mental health through drinking more water, because

studies have shown that the way a person perceives themselves is greatly based

on their physical appearance.

With this in mind, a person can lose weight through a greater

amount of water consumed. In the 2018 article “Here’s how much

water you need to ensure weight loss” in The Times of India, it is

clear that this is because water has some important qualities: it has

zero calories and the ability to make you feel full (Here’s how

much water you need to ensure weight loss, 2018). It can also

greatly increase a person’s metabolic rate, which can also aid in

weight loss. If a person consumes little to no water at all, they are

more likely to eat more than a person who drinks the

recommended amount of water each day.

2. Although weight loss might make a person feel better about

themselves, it is not the only benefit that can improve a person’s

mental health.

3. By drinking an increased amount of water, a number of skin

problems can be combatted or prevented such as acne, wrinkles,

psoriasis, and eczema. According to Leah Payne in her 2017

article, “Water and our skin! An intricate relationship,” the skin is

made up of about 30 percent water, which in turn makes this water

content largely responsible for the plumpness, elasticity, and

resilience to the elements of our skin (Payne, 2017). A lack of

1.
water can cause the skin to dry out and cause problems not only in

the short run, but also in the long run range of a person’s life.

4. Even though increasing a person’s water intake has a huge number

of physical health benefits associated with it, the benefits don’t just

stop there. These physical benefits of aiding in weight loss and

bringing healthier skin can actually boost a person’s body image,

thus increasing a person’s mental health.

III. Conclusion

a. Review of Main Points :

i. First, I discussed a few of the ways in which drinking more water can

positively impact your joint and muscle health.

ii. Second, I discussed how drinking more water can benefit your immune

system and improve brain function.

iii. Lastly, I discussed the ways in which increasing your water intake can

benefit your physical well-being while also promoting your mental

health.

b. Restate Thesis : From health benefits to helping a person to look and feel

better, the benefits of increasing one’s water intake are

endless.

c. Closure : In conclusion, while there are numerous benefits of

increasing a person’s water intake, there are also negative

side effects of not consuming enough water in order for our

lOMoARcPSD|13517192

bodies to function properly. Water plays a crucial role in

maintaining a healthy body and its importance in our

everyday lives should not be overlooked.
