Before he proceeds to the proper discussion, he first introduced the seven (7)

learning objectives that the students will gain in the discussion. Dr. Refugio then
discussed the six (6) steps in analyzing and interpreting qualitative data. These are
(1) preparing and organizing the data for analysis, (2) exploring the data through
coding, (3) using codes to develop description and themes, (4) representing the
findings through narratives and visuals, (5) making an interpretation of the
meaning of the findings and (6) strategies to validate the accuracy of the findings.
The qualitative process of data analysis of figure 8.1 was mentioned by Dr.
Refugio. From the given figure, the researcher collects data (a text file such as
field notes, transcriptions, optically scanned material). Then the researcher
prepares data for analysis and then the researcher reads through data followed
by the researcher codes the data then either codes the text for description to be
used in the research report or codes the text for the themes to be used in the
research report. Dr. Refugio also mentioned “How do you prepare and organize
the data for analysis” in this category we have by organizing data and transcribing
data. In data collection, one must possess certain aspects such as a high-quality
audio recording, high quality recording device with external microphone, using a
lapel microphones and taking up back-up notes during instances that the
recording device is not functioning. In preparing and organizing data for analysis,
one must also analyze by hand or computer. hand analysis if you prepare not to
use software or want to be close to the data. And by analyzing by computer it is
used if the researchers use qualitative software to facilitate the process of storing,
analyzing, sorting or visualizing data. Dr. Refugio also discussed in how to explore
and code the data such as by obtaining a general sense of the data by performing
exploratory analysis and writing memos in the margins of interviews, field notes
or images of your initial reflections on the data. In the discussed video, Dr.
Refugio also showed the visual model of the coding process in qualitative
research. In using codes to build description and themes, one is required to ask a
detailed question that aligns to the description to accumulate information that
aided the description. We can also stumble different standpoint or sources such
as it is the nature of accumulating information of the masses. In presenting and
reporting the findings one must present it in a more of systematical and organized
such as it is a crucial point in presenting data. We use comparison table,
hierarchical tree, figures/diagrams, drawings or demographic table depending in
the type of report. Dr. Refugio also discussed “how do you interpret findings”
such as he mentioned by summarizing the findings, including personal insights or
opinions about the meaning of the data, address limitations of the study and
make suggestions for future research.
