Multiple Choice
Direction: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate sheet
of paper.
1. Which among the following materials is not used during the spraying of pesticides and
herbicides?
a. bolo
b. mask
c. boots
d. head protector/head gear
2. Which among the following place is the proper storage of extra amount of chemicals?
a. uncovered trash bins
b. reachable cabinet of children
c. buried close to the water source
d. Cabinet that children can’t reach, away from the food supply and properly
sealed.
Agriculture is the producers of the countries food, everything we eat is the product of
sacrifice and hard labor of the workers. Growing population means higher needs of the
product. The natural nutrients in the field are slowly depleted and the birth of the new pest
threaten the percentage of supply. The event of food shortage is unavoidable.
The old ways of farming which use simple ways and tools like animals and bolo
without pesticides and fertilizers. It should be upgraded to meet the population’s demands.
Through the evolution of time chemicals and materials used by the farmer are getting
complicated. Due to technology and invention, the old ways are being replace. Farming
became complex and procedures of equipment need to be follow. The safety of the worker
became at stake in the present.
Handling highly poisonous chemicals in the farm should be deal seriously. These
chemicals are fatal, if protection are neglected and safety procedure are violated. The hazard
of machine in the work place are growing due to uneducated used and failure to follow safety
procedures. In these manner to identify hazard and its corresponding maintenance task are
important to lessen the damage to workers.
What’s In
Materials in the farm today are too complicated compared to the old days. Before we
can work in the farm without protection like mask and gloves, since chemicals are not
practiced in farming before. Personal protective equipment are significant for the worker to
stay healthy and productive. Proper disposal of the materials like chemicals should be
followed to avoid contamination and being poison.
What’s New
Mr. Swabe is spraying Padan mixed with Solomon to his two hectare melon farm early
in the morning. Swabe does not take breakfast or even coffee. He used a shell knapsack 16
litters capacity. The mixture of the chemical is one pouch of Padan and 3.2ml of Solomon.
Swabe source of water is from the river located in his farm. Around 5:30 in the morning he
started the work. He wasn’t able to bring his mask, he forgot where he place the mask. He
has a pair of gloves place in his both hands. He wear a head gear and long sleeves. His
lower garments is long pants and boots.
Swabe is a hard working farmer he is a father of two children namely Raul and
Michael. His wife is a Teacher in barangay Malipayun. Both his children are enrolled in
Malipayun Elementary School. Raul is a grade six student and Michael is a grade four
student. The wife of swabe is teaching Grade three section B. Swabe is a hands on farmer,
he do farm chores which based on his capacity.
Melon is a fruit which is sweet and full of vitamins. It is excellent during hot season for
cooling effect. It can be used as ingredients in fruit salad and other dessert. The demand of
the market is high. The profit is good if this fruit is properly propagated. Chemicals are
needed to maintain its good condition, pesticides are apply in a regular schedule to keep
away insect and pest.
After Swabe delivered two knapsack of chemicals he take two stick of cigarettes under
the coconut tree for about three minutes. Afterwards, he delivered another 4 knapsack of
chemicals. And take another two stick of cigarettes. Around 7:30 in the morning he decided
to go home and eat breakfast. When he arrived in the house he removed his gloves and
cloths and put it in the chair inside the house. Swabe eat his breakfast sound and good. His
food is red rice with adobong manok. After the breakfast he drink two glass of water.
Furthermore, Swabe take few stick of cigarettes in their corridor. After 30 minutes,
Swabe feel unusual. Swabe feel headache so he lay down in his long chair inside the house.
After a few minutes he feel dizziness eventually nausea and vomiting. His brother Nick
noticed the event, he asked swabe what happened? Swabe told his brother his activity early
in the morning. Nick immediately contact the barangay rescue and bring his brother to the
nearest hospital. After five days swabe get out from the hospital with the bill of 35,000.00
pesos.
What Is It
Any equipment which protects the worker from a health and safety risk. In the work
place handling chemicals and equipment’s are usual. Agricultural worker may exposed to
chemicals, such as pesticides, veterinary drugs, solvents, and oils which might in a long-term
cause asthma, skin problems, harm the nervous system or even cancer. The reaction of the
molecules when it is on full contact to the human body is harmful. Pesticides and herbicides
are design to hinder pest and herbs excluding us. Pest and herbs are organic matter like
humans. The chemical composition of the chemicals are to supress the subject. But workers
are humans and organic matter, so worker are also vulnerable to toxicity. Manipulating
machines in the work place are hazardous to worker, in a blink of an eye some parts can be
faulty. PPE is the barrier between worker and hazardous chemicals and machines in the
work place.
These are steps and procedures provided by the manufacturer to its client to avoid
being harm. Harmful chemicals should be treated at outmost concerned since it could end
life at instant if proper medical needs is not meet then chemicals can contaminate food and
water supply.
In the work place the hazard is high. Maintenance activities in agriculture are various
and include the maintenance of both machinery and infrastructure, and the task range from
oil and filter changes, battery charging and replacement, lubrication. Clearing blockages and
maintenance of hydraulic systems and tractors. Maintenance of roofs and glasshouse, silos,
slurry tanks, bins and grain tanks and electric fences and roads. Farmers often carry out a lot
of maintenance work by themselves. This applies to routine maintenance like general repair
work as well as day-to-day maintenance. Financial pressures lead to a situation in which
farmers choose the do-it-yourself approach instead of paying a specialist contractor. This
increases the risk of accidents because, on the one hand, the farmer may not have
competences in maintenance and on the other, machines and vehicles in agriculture are
becoming more and more sophisticated, thus requiring qualification in maintenance and
repair. Because of the wide variety of tasks, there are many different hazards involved.
Below are the list of hazard.

vehicle. Along the way there is unusual noise beneath the vehicle engine. Immediately, you
stop along the road. Upon checking the engine, you found out that the fan belt was detach
and radiator is getting empty of water. As an owner you wanted to repair the engine but,
you’re not Knowledgeable enough for the maintenance.
In this scenario identify what are the possible hazard that you may encounter upon
repairing your multicab.

Additional Activities
You are a field supervisor of the hacienda De Castro which covers 2500 hectares. 300
hectares planted with falcata. Another 200 hectares planted with Gemilina. The rubber area
is 1000 hectares, which already in operation for about eight years. Moreover, there are 500
hectares for sugar cane with varying varieties. The other 200 hectares are planted with
cacao intercropped with lanzones and lacatan. The remaining 300 hectares are filled with
dwarf coconut variety of bilaka.
With this vast area the human power of the farm should be increased. The
Management started to hire additional farm worker particularly in maintenance such as: pest
control, weed control, pruning, applying fertilizer, fencing, building, machine operator,
electrical and harvesting. The management hired 75 persons as an additional new worker.
The manager gives an order to you, to orient the newly hired worker in terms of the
following aspects:
