The artist may be trying to engage the audience in an interactive connection between his creation
and the viewer by intentionally making the subject matter difficult to understand. Also, there are times
when people can easily understand the subject matter but may not recognize the artwork as something
that pertains to them. It could be something they just don't like or aren't interested in. People only really
understand the concept of a contemporary artist if they are familiar with it. And sometimes the concept or
idea of a contemporary artist is too extreme or too complex to understand.
A person must first understand what contemporary art is in order to define why "process" rather
than "sale" is important. Artwork is not usually created to sell; it is created to see how people will react to
it; therefore, the process behind making the artwork is much more important than selling it.
In contemporary art, originality doesn't matter because everyone is involved, and each viewer
contributes in their own way.
