Week 5, Session 15

Provide the step-by-step solutions to the following problems. Write your answer on the space provided.

Given below is a schematic for a simple LED flashlight, as well as the values therein. If the LED would
burn out at currents above 12 milliamperes,

1. What is the entire circuit’s current if the total resistance is zero?

V
Formula :I =
R
12 v
Solution :I =

I =0 amp/ A

The current in the circuit will be zero regardless of whether or not the total resistance is
zero. Despite this, a small amount of leakage current on the order of micro amperes will flow.
2. How much resistance is needed to keep the LED from burning out?
V
Formula : R=
I
12V
Solution :R=
( 12mA )( 0.001 )
12V
¿
0.012 A
R=1000 Ω

There is no requirement for resistance in order to prevent LED from burning.
3. How much power does the LED use?
Formula :P=R x I 2
Solution :P=¿
P=0.0144 W
LED does not use any electrical power at all. However, because of the leakage current in
the opposite direction, a power on the order of picowatts will flow.
4. Determine the resistance of the second resistor if the first resistor is four (4) times higher
resistance than it. Rt
Fomula: R 1=4 x + x
(1000 Ω) 5 x
Solution : =
5 5
¿ 200 Ω
R1 and R2 are necessary components for this circuit to function properly. So, the equation
R1=R2=0 is correct.

In the circuit that has been provided, the LED is connected so that it has a reverse bias. In reverse bias
mode, none of the LED flashlight will function normally. It would function just like a typical diode when
connected in reverse bias, meaning that it would block the entire current flow regardless of the voltage that
was being applied. However, if the voltage was significantly higher than normal, the LED would be
destroyed.
