QUESTION 1 [13]

A full-wave voltage rectifier gets fed off a 100V, 1kHz sine wave supply. T 0 is defined
at the point where the supply voltage crosses zero volts in the positive direction.
1.1 Sketch the spectrum of the rectified waveform up to the 5th harmonic. Show all
calculations. (10)
1.2 The waveform is passed through a low pass filter with a cut-off frequency of
2.5kHz. Explain the filter response w.r.t. the wave. (3)

QUESTION 2 [17]

A 10 MHz carrier wave, with an amplitude of 800V peak to peak, gets amplitude
modulated with a 200V peak, 2 kHz sine wave. The carrier power is 200W.
2.1 Draw the modulated wave in the time domain. (not to scale) (3)
Calculate:
2.2 The modulation index. (2)
2.3 The RMS voltage of the carrier. (2)
2.4 The load resistance of the transmitter. (2)
2.5 Sketch the signal as it would appear on a spectrum analyser, with power in
dBm. (8)

QUESTION 3 [7]

A Frequency Synthesizer with a two-modulus prescaler (diagram below) is used to

generate signals at 29MHz and 29.01MHz respectively by changing the the value of
the programmable divider M. The signals are used for a FSK (Frequency Shift
Keying) modulator. The Synthesizer has a 1 MHz crystal oscillator, a fixed modules
divider (Q), two programmable dividers (M and N) which are fully programmable for
settings from 1 – 500. The two-modulus prescaler is fixed with P = 5.
2

Calculate:
2.1 The value of the fixed-modulus divider (Q). (3)
2.2 The counter settings of the two Programmable dividers (M and N) to produce
the two required output frequencies.
(Hint: Set one of the Programmable divider counters to maximum.) (4)
