(DIY Word Art)

Inside the box, try to define the word “define” through DIY word art. See the
example below.

In the 21st century, finding the definition of words has become easier because of
the products of technology, as well as the continuous domination of the internet in
people’s daily lives. The meaning of difficult words can also be reached “at the tip of the
finger”, as smartphone dictionary applications are easily downloadable for free, and are
also user-friendly.

Learning Activity 4
Directions: In this time, finding the definition of words has become easier
because of the products of technology. In just a click, you can already define a word.
Everything has its own definition. One word can produce many descriptions whether it is
from different dictionary, encyclopedia and/or in any application. But, we can also define
a word from ourselves. For example, we have different definition of success, true friend
or a family. In connection with these, with the minimum of five sentences, answer the
following questions below. Consider the following criteria in each question. (content-3

TECHNICAL TERMS USED IN RESEARCH

1. RESEARCH is an organized and systematic way of finding answers to questions.

Systematic because there is a definite set of procedures and steps which will follow. There are
certain things in the research process which are always done in order to get the accurate results.
Organized in that there is a structure or method in going about doing research. It is a planned
procedure, not a spontaneous one. It is focused and limited to specific scope.
Finding answers is the end of all research. Whether it is the answer to a hypothesis or even a
simple question, research is successful when we find answers. Sometimes the answer is no. but is still
an answer.
Questions are central to research. If there is no question, then the answer is of no use.
Research is focused on relevant, useful, and important questions. Without a question, research has no
focus, drive or purpose.

2. RESEARCH PAPER is a piece of academic writing that provides analysis, interpretation and
argument based on in-depth independent research.

3. ABSTRACT is a short summary of your completed research. It is intended to describe your work
without going into detail. It should be self-contained and concise, explaining your work as briefly and
clearly as possible.

4. INTRODUCTION leads the reader from a general subject area to a particular topic of inquiry. It
established the scope, context, and significance of the research being conducted by;
 summarizing current understanding and background information about the topic.
 stating the purpose of the work in the form of the research problem supported by a
hypothesis or a set of questions
 explaining briefly the methodological approach used to examine the research problem
 highlighting the potential outcomes your study can reveal
 outlining the remaining and organization of the paper.

5. LITERATURE REVIEW provides an overview of sources you have explored including books,
scholarly articles, and any other sources relevant to a particular issue, area of research or theory to
demonstrate to your readers how your research fits within a larger field of study.
It provided an overview of current knowledge, allowing you to identify relevant theories, methods
and gaps in the existing research.

6. HYPOTHESIS, a statement of expectation or prediction that will be tested by research. It is commonly

known as the researcher’s intellectual guess or wild guess about the possible result of the study.

7. METHODOLOGY is the systematic method to resolve a research problem through data gathering
using various techniques, providing an interpretation of data gathered, and drawing conclusions about
the research data.
AIM: To ensure valid and reliable results that address the research aims and objectives.
It is where the researcher will decide:
 What data to collect (and what data to ignore)
 Who to collect it from (in research, this is called “sampling design”)
 How to collect it (this is called “data collection methods”)
 How to analyse it (this is called “data analysis methods”)

8. POPULATION. The entire group that you want to draw conclusions about. In research, it doesn’t
always refer to people. It can mean a group containing elements of anything you want to study, such
as objects, events, organizations, countries, species, organism, etc.

9. SAMPLE is a smaller part or subgroup of the population. The specific group within a population that
you will collect data form. The group of individuals who will participate in your study. They are the ones
who will answer surveys or interviews.

10. VARIABLE is any factor, trait, or condition that can be manipulated, controlled for, or measured in
any experiment.
There are two common variable types in research.
Independent Variable is the variable in an experiment that is changed or manipulated. It
assumed to have a direct effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable is the variable that responds to the changes. The variable being tested
and measured, dependent on the independent variable.

11. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT is any tool that you may use to collect or obtain data, measure data,
and analyse data that is relevant to the subject of your research. The format may consist of;
 Questionnaires
 Surveys
 Interviews
 Checklist
 Simple Tests

12. QUESTIONNAIRE is the main instrument for collecting data in survey research. Basically, it is a
set of standardized questions, often called items, which follow a fixed scheme on order to collect
individual data about one or more specific topics.

13. DATA is any information that has been collected, observed and generated or created to validate
original research findings.

14. RESULTS (findings). The section of a research paper where the authors provide the data collected
during their study.

15. DISCUSSION. The section of a research paper whose purpose is to interpret and describe the
significance of your findings in light of what was already known about the research problem being
investigated; and to explain any new understanding or insights that emerged as a result of your study
of the problem.

16. CONCLUSION intended to help the readers understand why your research should matter to them
after they have finished reading the paper. It is not merely a summary of your points or a restatement
of your research problem but a synthesis of key points.

17. REFERENCE is the last page of a research paper that lists all the sources you used in your study.
It gives credit to authors you have consulted for their ideas.

18. APPENDIX serves as a space for materials that help clarify your research, but do not belong in the
main text. This is where the researchers attach a copy of their research instrument, such as interview,
transcripts, questionnaires or surveys.

TECHNICAL and OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS of WORDS
DEFINITION of TERMS is an alphabetical list of important terms, acronyms, or jargons used in
the research. Jargons are terminologies only understood by people in a certain group and difficult for
others to understand. Here are some examples of jargons or special words in a particular field.
Medical Jargons Business Jargons Police Jargons
Idiopathic Scalable Code eleven
tachycardia Sweat equity Wolf pack
Definition of terms is important because the important terms, acronyms and jargons are clarified
and clearly define for the readers of the paper.
TWO TYPES of DEFINITION
1. TECHNICAL DEFINITION or sometimes called as the conceptual or theoretical definition is the
universal meaning of term. It is definition that comes from different reference materials such as
dictionaries, encyclopaedias, books, journals and even websites.
2. OPERATIONAL DEFINITION is how the term applied or used in the research. It refers to a specific
definition of a concept in a research study. Usually, for operational definition, it is you—the researcher
who formulates the meaning of the term which is objectively anchored on the technical definition.

Guidelines in defining terms:

1. Only terms, words or phrases that have special or unique meaning in the study are defined.
2. What to define?
Important words in the title (such as the variables)
Technical terms used in the research paper
Words for the treatments and measurement (data analysis terms, etc.)
3. Define terms technically, operationally or both.
4. If the terms are from dictionaries, books, encyclopedia, other publications and even websites
(technical definition), acknowledge the source.
5. If there are uncommon acronyms, include them; spell the out and give the meaning.
6. Definitions should be short, clear and unambiguous.

EXAMPLE NO. 1

Definition of Terms (TECHNICAL)

The following terms are further defined technically or conceptually.
Comprehension. The ability to understand completely and be familiar with a situation, fact, text,
or message. (Cambridge Dictionary, 2019)
Instructional Leadership. As defined by de Lima (2008), the ability to involve colleagues
collaboratively in mutual learning and development, with the main purpose of improving and learning.

EXAMPLE NO. 2

Definition of Terms (OPERATIONAL)

For the reader’s cleared understanding of the present study, the following terms were defined
operationally:
Age. This was the length of time a person has lived as commenced by his birth. Teachers’ ages
from early twenties to fifty-nine. As mandated by law, a teacher was expected to retire when he reached
the age of sixty.
Civil Status. It described a person’s socially-recognized relationship with a significant other.
Teachers who were single generally had more time to spend preparing the lesson assessing the
students’ learnings than those who were married.

EXPANDED DEFINTIONS OF WORDS

Expanded definition is a one or more paragraphs that attempt to explain a complex term.
Some terms maybe so important in your report, there maybe so much confusion about them or they
maybe so difficult to understand that an expanded discussion is vital for the success of your report. An
expanded definition starts with a full definition of a term that is one sentence definition and then expands
to at least one paragraph long or more.

Here is an example of a full definition.

Carbohydrates are food group including sugars, starches, and cellulose.

Example of its expanded definition

Carbohydrates can also be defined chemically as neutral compounds of carbon, hydrogen and
oxygen. The body breaks down most sugars and starches into glucose, a simple sugar that the bidy
can use to feed it cells. Dietary intake if complex carbohydrates can lower blood cholesterol when they
are substituted for saturated fat.
Carbohydrates are classified into mono, di, tri, poly and heterosaccharides. The smallest
carbohydrates are monosaccharides such as glucose whereas polysaccharides such as starch,
cellulose and glycogen can be large and even indeterminate in length.

VARIOUS WAYS OF GIVING EXPANDED DEFINITIONS

1. First way of composing expanded definition is through DESCRIPTION in which the topic must be
describe.
2. The expanded definition is a PROCESS NARRATION in which process has been explained on how
thing is applied.
3. Expanded definition is also an ADDITIONAL DEFINITION in which you just only add information
about the topic being defined.
4. It provides HISTORICAL BACKGROUND of the topic.
5. Expanded definition shows CAUSES related to the term being defined.
6. It also includes the effect, results and consequence and problem solution.
