 Tagalog Literature
The literature used on most part of Luzon. Those
who use this type of literature are coming from
Southern Luzon, Central Luzon and Metro Manila or
NCR. Among the Southern Tagalog provinces are
CALABARZON and MIMAROPA Region.

Tagalog regions is the birthplace of a rich tradition of

Philippine culture in language, politics, economy and
literature.

1. Francisco Balagtas
A Filipino Tagalog litterateur and poet
during the Spanish colonial period of the
Philippines. He is widely considered one of the
greatest Filipino literary laureates for his
impact on Filipino literature.

A poet, playwright, and novelist, who
practiced “committed art.” In his view, the
function of the writer is to act as the conscience
of society and to affirm the greatness of the
human spirit in the face of inequity and
oppression. Hernandez’s contribution to the

knife;
I was spewed out from the entire world of sorrows
And taken for dead when life has not escaped life

is an arm’s length of heaven full of bitter
tears,
selfish panorama or a wounded heart’s gate,

Francisco is recognized for his masterful use
of Tagalog and storylines which largely focused
on the lives of farmers and the challenges they
faced in a landlord-tenant relationship—long
before agrarian reform was acknowledged as a
necessary measure.

A pioneering Filipino novelist,
journalist, revolutionary, union leader,
and editor. He was one of the first
novelists in the Philippines to explore
and present social realism through
literature.

3. Alejandro Abadilla
He is commonly known as AGA, was a
Filipino poet, essayist, and fiction writer. He
considered as the father of modern Philippine
poetry, and was known for challenging
established forms and literature's "excessive
romanticism and emphasis on rhyme and
meter".

4. Modesto de Castro
A Filipino priest from Binyang in
Laguna which was one of the richest provinces
in Luzon. It is said that he studied at Colegio de
San Jose run by the Jesuits (Javellana 1994,
576). He became a parish priest in several places
such as the Manila Ca- thedral and in Naic,
Cavite.
