Lesson
Understanding Key Structural Elements
1 of the Two Kinds of Exposition

Understanding the key structural elements is an interesting task. For you to identify the key
structural elements of an exposition and its types, you must revisit and master the important parts
of a text type. The important parts of a text type will help you in identifying the key structural
elements.

3
What’s In

Prior to this lesson, you have learned about the language used in research, campaign, and
advocacy. A number of terms have been presented in the previous lesson that are vital to
understanding research, campaign, and advocacy as a language. The way you establish your
research, campaign, and advocacy guarantees you and your readers stay engaged on and draw
links to your purpose.

Read each item very carefully and choose the best answer. Write the letter of your choice.

Notes to the Teacher

Let the students define exposition and its types and determine the
key structural elements.

4
What’s New
In this lesson, you will discover and learn what exposition is, its types and the key structural
elements. We must carefully understand how the parts of an exposition are written by looking into
its structures.
Read and analyze the texts below and identify the key structural elements of the two types of
expositions. Answer the questions that follow.
Controlling Children Using Computer
Paragraph 1
Computer and internet are useful as well as powerful. Information about health and safe usage of
computer and Internet, especially for children, should be owned by each family. Computer
connected to internet is powerful way to socialize with others. It can be good but also bad effect.
Recently we hear a lot of children get the advantage of social networking sites but we often see
the news about the disadvantage of it for children. Healthy and safety of computer and Internet
usage should continue to be campaigned.
Paragraph 2
The role of parent in assisting and directing children in using computer is very necessary.
Installation of software monitor such as key logger which has function to watch and note all
activities relating to keyboard usage is helpful but not enough to protect children from potential
harms. Children tend to hide what they have done in front of the computer to their parent. They
see that all of they have done are their privacy and no one may know.
Paragraph 3
We cannot prevent children from using computer because it is multifunctional. However, many
parents worry about what their kids do in front of the computer, whether they are doing homework
or even just playing games. Or spending all time to surf internet which is the materials do not fit
with his age. There is a tendency, especially teenagers, want to become acquainted with many
strangers outside. The lack parental supervision of children’s activities is likely to pose a potential
danger to them. So parental monitor against the use of computers needs to be done from time to
time.

1. What is the text all about?

2. What have you observed in each paragraph?
3. Do you find this passage convincing?
4. In the passage you have read, what makes you convinced and what clue words make
you believe on the idea presented?

5
In life, we are often given the freedom to express ourselves. We need to speak, for us to be
heard. Our arguments and reasons must be reliable, valid, strong, and with enough evidence.
In this lesson, you will be taught on how to identify the key elements of the two types of
expositions. It is very important to get acquainted with these elements so that we will be organized
in expressing our thoughts when it comes to persuading and influencing others.
An exposition attempts to persuade the reader to believe something by presenting one side
of the argument. There are two types of exposition. They are Analytical exposition and Hortatory
Exposition.
Analytical exposition is a piece of text that presents one side of an issue. If you have ever
strived to persuade someone to believe something or if you have argued with someone, then you
have applied the exposition text type. The purpose of an analytical exposition text is to persuade the
reader or listener to agree or take action to solve the problem by presenting one side of an argument.
(Anderson & Anderson 1998:22)
Hortatory Exposition is a type of English text which embodies the author’s attempt to
influence the reader to do something or act in a particular way. In Hortatory Exposition Text, the
authors give some opinions about certain things to reinforce the main idea of the text. The purpose
of this text is to persuade readers or listeners that something should or should not be the case.
The key structural elements of Analytical Exposition are the statement of position, the
arguments, and the restatement of position.
The generic elements of Hortatory exposition are Statement of position or the so-called thesis,
arguments, and recommendation.
Analytical Exposition’ key structural elements are:
- Statement of position presents the topic and make it vivid what the position is. You should
have a strong starting sentence that prompts your reader's attention or takes your reader’s attention.
It is an outline or argument on the topic and the points you will make it to. This gives a direct outline
of the main points to be contained by your argument. This gives your reader a foretaste of where
you are going to take them and allows you to show the reader that your exposition is structured
rationally or logically.
- Arguments are to be logically developed and supported, and justified with reasons,
examples, expert evidence and statistical information. Several points are generally made in the
argument stage. This is where the argument is emphasized.
- The restatement of position is the summing up of the exposition in the light of the argument
that has been presented reinforces the statement of position and often calls for some type of action
on the part of the audience.

6
Hortatory exposition’s key structural elements are:
- Thesis in which the writer’s point of view about the topic to be discussed.
- Arguments are to be logically developed and supported, and justified with reasons,
Examples expert evidence and statistical information. Several points are generally made in
the argument stages. This is where the argument is emphasized.
- Recommendation in this part, the writer gives recommendation to the reader; it presents
the statement of what ought or ought not to
Let us learn about each of these!
Exposition or arguments can be presented as:
• essays
• editorials
• letters to the editor
• speeches

What’s More

Activity 1.1
Read the text and identify the key structural elements by underlining and labelling them.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Diamond is very expensive for several reasons. First, they difficult to find. They are only
found in a few places in the world. Second, they are useful. People use diamonds to cut other
stones. The third, diamonds do not change. They stay the same for millions of years. And

TEXT 2

We are writing to complain about ads on TV. They are so many ads, especially during our
favorite programs. We think they should be stopped for a number of reasons.

First, ads are nuisance. They go on for a long time and there are so many. Sometimes they
seem to be so many ads in one program.

Second, ads are bad influence on people. They try to encourage people to buy unhealthy
food like beer, soft drink, candy, and chips. And they make people want things they do not really
need and cannot afford. It can lead to consumerism.

Finally, the people who make ads have to much say in what programs people watch. That is
because they want to put all their ads on popular programs that a lot of people watch. Some
programs that are not so popular get stopped because they do not attract enough ads, even though
those programs may be someone’s favorite.

For those reasons, we think your TV station should stop showing ads. They interrupt
programs. They are bad influence on people, and they are sometimes put a stop to people’s favorite
shows. We are sick of ads, and now we mostly watch other channels.

Activity 1.3 Read to evaluate!

Directions: Read the Exposition very carefully and arrange the key structural elements
accordingly. Use numbers 1-5.

Why Students Should Eat Breakfast Everyday

_____ Another reason for eating breakfast is because you need food for to do well in your
classes. You body and your brain are not going to function as good as they could because you
have no energy and no strength. When you try to learn something and have nothing in your
stomach, you are going to have a lot of trouble succeeding. A lot of people think that they should
not eat because they are going to feel tired, but that’s not true. Breakfast is not a very big meal,
and on the contrary, you’re going to feel tired if you don’t have breakfast because you have spent
the entire previous night without food.
_____ You have to realize that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and you cannot
skip it without consequences for your health, your school and your defense mechanism. It is
better to wake up earlier and have a good breakfast that run to school without eating anything. It
is time for you to do something for your health, and eating breakfast is the better way to start
your day.

_____ A lot of people, especially young people, go through the day without having breakfast.
Many people believe that it is not necessary, or they say that they don’t have time for that and
begin their day with no meal. I believe that everyone should eat breakfast before going to their
activities. The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of breakfast, especially for
students.
_____ The last reason to have breakfast every day is because you can avoid diseases if you eat
some breakfast in the morning. If you don’t eat, you are going to get sick, and these diseases
will have a stronger effect on you because you’re going to get sick easier than people who have
breakfast every day.
_____ The first reason why you should eat breakfast before going to school is for your health.
When you skip breakfast and go to school, you are looking for a disease because it’s not healthy
to have an empty stomach all day long. It’s very important to have a meal and not let your
stomach work empty. All you are going to get is gastritis and a lot of problems with your health if
you don’t eat breakfast.

Assessment 1.3 Check to appraise!
Directions: Read the short text and evaluate whether the key structural elements go together
smoothly and accordingly.
Write your analysis in 2 – 3 sentences.

Internet for students

Nowadays, in modern era, I believe internet is very important not only for teachers but also for
students due to the so – called new normal because of pandemic.

As we all know internet has many functions for supporting our life. They are, first, it gives us
various information, news, knowledge etc. Students can search anything or something from
internet. Take for example, they search about education, the confusion about the answers in their
modules, entertainment, knowledge etc. that is in the world.

Second, they can add their friends in all countries in the world by internet. Chatting, e-mail,
Facebook, and twitter are some examples of internet facility to have many friends. Besides, they
can share, communicate, discuss and so on.

From my arguments above, as student, we should use internet facility well to get knowledge,
friends, information etc.

I personally think that reading is a very important activity in our life. Why do I say so?
Firstly, by reading we can get a lot of knowledge about many things in the world such as Science,
technology. Sports, arts, culture, etc. written in either books, magazine, newspaper, etc.
Secondly, by reading we can get a lot of news and information about something happening in any
parts of the world which can we see directly. Another reason, reading can give us pleasure too.
When we are tired, we read books, newspaper, or magazine on the entertainment column such
as comedy, short story, quiz, etc. to make us relaxed. The last, reading can also take us to other
