More and more students are choosing to study at colleges and universities in foreign

countries. Do the benefits of studying abroad outweigh the drawbacks?

It is a well-known fact that these days, students have increasingly decided to go abroad for

entering colleges and universities. Despite certain benefits associated with this trend, it is not

without drawbacks.

On the one hand, there are two primary advantages of the popularity of studying abroad in

contemporary society. First, given that universities in developed countries over the world employ

lecturers who are experts in their field, students can be trained professionally and equipped with

necessary skills. This means they are more likely to gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on

experience than those studying domestically. Second, when a student chooses to study abroad,

he/she has more opportunities to brush up on a second language and be exposed to different

cultures. For example, Vietnamese people often go to the US because most American use

English in daily communication and it’s a cultural melting pot where they can absorb a variety of

interesting things.

On the other hand, these positives cannot offset the negatives of studying abroad. In order to

study and settle in abroad, many families have to meet difficult requirements such as visas. To

that end, families having a child choose this route might have not only time but also financial

capacity to address problems relating to paperwork. Furthermore, leaving the place where they

were born and raised in for a long time must be a barrier difficult to overcome. The reason is that

they are given the greatest comfort when confronting difficulties in life, and thus they may feel

homesick and lonely when going abroad.

In conclusion, although ever-increasing this trend is beneficial to some extent, it has produced a

number of negative outcomes. As professional and advantageous as studying abroad is, it might

come at the cost of paperwork problems and homesick feelings.
