PHYSICS
UNITS AND DIMENSIONS

1. Find the dimensions of Planck’s constant hfrom the equation E=hυwhere E is

the energy and υ is the frequency.
2. Taking force, length and time to bethe fundamental quantities find the
dimensions of –
(a)Density (b) pressure
(c) Momentum (d) energy
3. LetI=current through a conductor, R=it’s resistance and V= potential
difference across its ends. According to ohm’s law, product of two of these
quantities equals the third. Obtain ohm’s law from dimensional analysis.
Dimensional formulae for R and V are ML2I-2T-3and ML2T-3I-1 respectively.
4. The critical velocity Vc of a body depends on the coefficient of viscosity ɳ, the
density ƿ and radius of drop r. Then find the expression for Vc.
5. Suppose the kinetic energy of a body oscillating with amplitude A and at a
distance x is given by K= .the dimensions of B are
6. An experiment measures quantities a, b and c, and X is calculated from
X=ab2/c3.If the percentage error in a, b, c are ±1%, ±3% and ±2% respectively,
find the percentage error in X.
7. The distance covered by a particle in time t is given by x=a+bt+ct2+dt3; find
the dimensions s of a, b,c and d.
8. Convert 20Ninto the system in which M is 1Kg*=10Kg, L is 1m*=1m and T is
1s*=3600s.
9. Convert a power of one megawatt on a system whose fundamentalunits are
10Kg, 1dm and 1 minute.
10. The height of mercury column in a barometer in a Calcutta laboratory was
recorded to be 75 cm. calculate this pressure in SI and cgs units using the
following data: specify gravity of mercury =13.6, density of water = 103 Kg/m3,
g= 9.8 m/so at Calcutta. Pressure = hƿg in usual symbols.
11. Write the dimensions of a/b in the relation F = a√𝑥 + bt2 where F is force, x is
distance and t is it
