LAB # 01
“ Introduction to Multisim and I/V Characteristics of
General Purpose Diode (1N4001)”
1. Aim:
Introduction to MultiSim and IV characteristics of
General purpose diode ( 1N4001).

2. Theory :
INTRODUCTION
In multisim software there are several tools are used to select
electronic devices like power sources, grounds, resistors, capacitors,
diodes, transistors etc. First tool is called as place source, then comes
place basic, place diode, place transistor etc. We will use these four
only. The purpose for these to run, pause and stop simulation .This one
is used to select particular mode of simulation we want to run like
interactive simulation, DC sweep, transient, AC sweep, DC operating
system, etc. Our basic concern is to study only these above-mentioned
modes.

There are some probs like voltage prob , current prob, differential
(voltage reference) prob, power (watt) prob, and voltage and current
prob. We use these probs according to our usage like if we want to
view voltage graph or voltage value across a resistor or a diode, we will
use voltage prob or differential prob. Similarly, if we want to have an
analysis, we will use current prob.

Now we are going to explain one by one to this all.

Probs:

DC Sweep:
It basically performs a sequence of DC operating point and
simulations. It increments the voltage or current over a range of values.
DC sweep can be used with any source that includes a DC offset
variable.

AC Sweep :
AC sweep is basically a frequency response analysis. PSpiceA/D
calculates the small-signal response of the circuit to a combination of
inputs by transforming it around the bias point and treating it as a
linear Circuit.

Interactive Simulation:
This mode performs a time-domain
simulation (transient analysis) until you click the Stop button. In this
mode, data is displayed by the instruments and by the indicator
components.

DC Operating Point:
DC sweep performs a sequence of DC
operating point simulations. It increments the voltage or current of a
selected source in predefined steps over a range of values. DC sweep

can be used with any source that includes a DC offset variable. An

optional second source can also be used to run a nested sweep.

3. Experimental procedure:
So, now we go to the mode panel
and select DC sweep. Then add a start value of voltage from where you
want to start your graph. Then enter end value where you want your
graph to end. Start value should be smaller than the end value. Then
choose an increment value of the sweep. Now take a current prob and
attach it in series with the diode and power source. Be careful about
the current direction. The arrow at the end of this prob shows the
direction of current. “ If current is from left to right place it in that
direction and if direction of current is from right to left then flip the
prob. Now save this settings and run the simulation.

a.Circuit diagram:

b. I-V CHARACTERISTICS OF DIODE

We will perform a basic DC Sweep and check out the IV
Characteristics of a Diode in forward Bias.

First of all, we added a DC Voltage Source using the Purple Circle as

shown in the figure. The circuit will be made by attaching a 12V DC
Voltage Source in series with a 1N4001 Diode and a ground.

5.Output waveform :

As shown in the graph, current starts flowing through the diode when
voltage rises above 0.7-o.8V. Before this a very small amount of reverse
current flows through the circuit that is approximately few nano
amperes.

6. Conclusion:
In this lab we came to know about multisim
,introduction to general purpose diodes, AC Sweep , DC Sweep,
Transient Analysis, DC Operating Point and their use.

From the graph, current starts flowing through the diode when voltage
rises above 0.7-o.8V. Before this a very small amount of reverse current
flows through the circuit that is approximately few nano amperes.
