1 Variable Separable DE Definition

VARIABLE SEPARABLE

Given the differential equation :

                            equation 1

where  M and N may be functions of both  and  . If the above equation can be transformed into the
form :

                            equation  2

where  is a function of  alone and   is a function of alone . Equation 1 is called

variable separable .

Examples  :

Given the following differential equation :

1.                                            Variable Separable

                                                                      ( can be transformed to : )

2.                                          Variable Separable

                                                                      ( can be transformed to :   )

3.                                     Variable Separable

                                                                       ( can be transformed to

4.                                     Not variable Separable

function of  ,  is not a function of
                                                                        -  alone

5.                                  Not Variable Separable

function of  ,  is not a function of
                                                                        - alone

Example

Solutions to Variable Separable Differential Equations

Steps in finding the general solution / particular solution of a given variable separable
differential equation.

1. Given
2. Transform the equation into the form
3. Integrate with respect to its respective variable
4. For initial value problems, substitute the value of x and y to find the value of c.

Then substitute the value of c to the general solution to find the particular solution.

2.1.2 First order Homogeneous
Differential Equation

Homogeneous Functions

Equations in the form  where each term in the and

have the same degree and the variables are not immediately separable equations by a change in
variable .

The polynomials:

are said to be homogeneous polynomials because each term possesses the same degree (power)
when all the powers of each variables are summed. The function  is said to be
homogeneous of degree in   and   if and only if   .

Steps in finding the general solution / particular solution of a given first order homogeneous
differential equation:

1. Given:   where   and   are homogeneous

of the same degree .

2. Transform into a separable equation by the transformation

 3. Separate Variables

4.  Integrate with respect to its respective variable

5. Substitute back   for     ,  for     ,

6. For initial value problems, substitute the value of   and   to find the value of   . Then
substitute the value of C to the general solution to find the particular solution.
