Learning Outcomes
At the end of this session, you should be able to
explain the hierarchical organization of living systems

From lowest to the highest

Lower level of organization
Non-living components:

On the chemical level, molecules are made up of

atoms.

Atom
The smallest unit of an element composed of electrons,
protons and neutrons
Molecule
The union of two ore more atoms of the same or different
elements
Lower level of organization
Living components:

The smallest part of an organism is a cell. It

contain structures, called organelles, that allow
them to be self-sufficient. There are two types of
cells: animal cell and plant cell.

Cell
The structural and functional unit of all living things
Lower level of organization
Living components:

Cells are organized into tissue.

Tissue
A group of cells with a common structure and function
Lower level of organization
Living components:

Organs are made up of tissues that organized

together on a large scale to do certain jobs in
living systems.

Organ
Composed of tissues functioning together for a specific
task
Lower level of organization
Living components:

Organs are organized into organ systems that

functioning together make up a living organism.

Organ system
Composed of tissues functioning together for a specific
task
Lower level of organization
Living components:

Organ systems functioning together make up a

living organism. Organisms that exist as single
cells are called unicellular and
organisms that comprised of organs and organ
systems are called multicellular.

Organisms
An individual: complex individuals contain organ systems
