➢ Bones form the skeleton of the body.
➢ There are more than 200 separate bone forming the skeleton.
➢ The study of bone is called "Osteology".
➢ It is consisted of:

Axial skeleton
➢ It consists the following:
Skull ‫الجمجمة‬

Vertebral colon ‫العمود الفقري‬

o formed of
▪ Cervical vertebra (7) ‫العنقية‬
▪ Thoracic vertebra (12) ‫الصدرية‬
▪ Lumbar vertebra (5) ‫القطنية‬
▪ Sacral vertebra (5) (fused) ‫العجزية‬
▪ Coccyx (4) (fused) ‫العصعصية‬
Ribs ‫الضلوع‬
o 12 on each side
o Posteriorly: all are attached to the thoracic vertebrae
o Anteriorly: the 11th and 12th ribs are floating
Sternum ‫عظمة القص‬
o in the mid line

➢ It consists:

o Shoulder girdle formed of :

Types of Bone According to Structure

➢ In a section of a bone, there are two types of bone:

Compact bone Cancellous bone “spongy”

▪ which is the dense, firm outer ▪ is formed of interlacing spicules or
shell of the bone trabeculae of bone.
▪ It is present at the ends of long bones.

 Muscular system
➢ 3 types of muscles:
skeletal muscles - Smooth muscles - Cardiac muscle

Skeletal muscles
➢ Muscles attached to the bones of the skeleton and move it.
➢ Example: Biceps muscle (and all muscles of the upper and lower limbs).
➢ Voluntary control (supplied by somatic nervous system).

Cardiac muscles
➢ Myocardium of the heart.
➢ It is autonomically regulated and has the character of
spontaneous contraction.

Smooth Muscles
➢ Example :

▪ Urinary bladder ‫ القناة البولية‬- Blood Vessels ‫الالوعية الدموية‬
➢ Involuntary control (supplied by autonomic nervous system).

Syndesmosis
o The bones are rough
o The bones are separated by a big amount of fibrous tissue
(interosseous ligament)
o Example : inferior tibio-fibular joint

Cartilaginous Joints
➢ The bones are separated by cartilage
➢ Two types :
Primary Cartilaginous Synchondroses
o cartilage between the bones is temporary - No movements
o The bones are separated by hyaline cartilage
o Example: the growing ends of long bones.

Secondary Cartilaginous symphysis

o The cartilage between the bones is permanent
o Limited movements.
o Example : symphysis pubis and all joints in median
plane as those present between bodies of vertebrae.

 Synovial Joints
➢ Most of the joints of the limbs are synovial.
➢ They permit considerable mobility.
➢ Characteristics of synovial joints:
▪ The articular surfaces are covered by
hyaline cartilage
▪ It is surrounded by a fibrous capsule which
separates it from the surrounding structures
▪ The joint cavity is surrounded by synovial
membrane which secretes synovial fluid
separating the articulating bones
▪ synovial membrane lines the joint
▪ The capsule is thickened by ligament

➢ Types of synovial joints:

Uniaxial joint
o The joint moves around one axis.
Hinge joint
o The joint moves around a horizontal axis.
o Example: Elbow joint.
Pivot joint
o There is a disc that rotates in a ring
o Example: superior radio-ulnar joint.

Biaxial joint
o The joint moves around two axes.
o Example: Wrist
o Movements:
Flexion - extension - abduction - adduction.

Polyaxial joint "Ball & Socket"

o It has multiple axes of movements
o Ball articulates with a socket.
o Example: Hip joint and shoulder joint.
o Wide range of movements
Flexion – extension – abduction – adduction -
medial rotation - lateral rotation - circumduction
