Articulations or joints: is the connection made between bones in the body which link the skeletal system
into a functional whole.
.‫ هي العالقة التي تتم بين العظام في الجسم والتي تربط نظام الهيكل العظمي في كل وظيفي‬:‫المفاصل أو المفاصل‬

Functions of the joints:

:‫وظائف المفاصل‬

1) Allowing movements of body segments by providing the bones with a mean of moving or rather of being
moved.
.‫) السماح بحركات أجزاء الجسم من خالل تزويد العظام بوسيلة للتحرك أو باألحرى تحريكها‬1

2) Providing stability without interfering with the desired motion.

.‫) توفير االستقرار دون التدخل في الحركة المطلوبة‬2

Functional classification:
:‫التصنيف الوظيفي‬

• Synarthroses: joints that have NO movement.

.‫ المفاصل التي ليس لها حركة‬:Synarthroses
-Examples: sutures of the skull, gomphoses- teeth
‫ األسنان‬- gomphoses ، ‫ خيوط الجمجمة‬:‫أمثلة‬-

• Amphiarthroses: partially movable joints.

.‫ مفاصل متحركة جزئيا‬:‫البرمائيات‬

-Examples: intervertebral disc and pubic symphysis

‫ القرص الفقري واالرتفاق العاني‬:‫أمثلة‬-

• Diarthroses: freely movable joints.

.‫ المفاصل المنقولة بحرية‬:Diarthroses

-The most common type of functional joint in the body.

.‫ النوع األكثر شيوعا من المفاصل الوظيفية في الجسم‬-

-Examples: knee joint, shoulder joint, finger joints, ankle and wrist joints, etc.

Structural Classification:

1. Fibrous joints (synarthroses): adjacent bones are joined by collagen fibers. 3 kinds:
:‫ أنواع‬3 .‫ يتم ربط العظام المجاورة بألياف الكوالجين‬:)synarthroses( ‫ المفاصل الليفية‬.1

- sutures, gomphoses and syndesmoses.

2. Cartilaginous joints (amphiarthroses): two bones are joined by cartilage. 2 kinds:

- synchondroses, and symphyses.

3. Synovial joints (Diarthroses): freely movable and most common joint in the body.

Terminology:
:‫المصطلحات‬

Concave: hollowed or rounded inward.

.‫ مجوف أو مستدير إلى الداخل‬: ‫مقعر‬

Convex: curved or rounded outward.

.‫ منحني أو مستدير للخارج‬:‫محدب‬

Congruent: The surfaces of the joint are equal.

.‫ أسطح المفصل متساوية‬:‫متطابقة‬

Incongruent: The surfaces of the joint not equal.

.‫ أسطح المفصل غير متساوية‬: ‫غير متطابق‬

Joint Shapes:
:‫األشكال المشتركة‬

• Ovoid: one surface is convex; another surface is concave.

.‫ والسطح اآلخر مقعر‬، ‫ سطح واحد محدب‬:‫• بيضاوي الشكل‬

• Sellar (saddle): one surface is concave in one direction & convex in the other, with the opposing surface
convex & concave respectively.

Synovial Joints (diarthroses):

this type of joint is defined by the presence of a joint cavity filled with fluid.
.‫يتم تعريف هذا النوع من المفاصل من خالل وجود تجويف مفصل مملوء بالسوائل‬
Most joints of the body fall into this class.
.‫تقع معظم مفاصل الجسم في هذه الفئة‬

Examples: knee joint, elbow joint, shoulder and hip joints and the phalanges of hands and feet, etc.

Structures in a Synovial Joint:

1. articular capsule – external and internal

. ‫كبسولة مفصلية – خارجية وداخلية‬
2. joint/synovial cavity – filled with synovial fluid
‫ مملوء بالسائل الزليلي‬- ‫ الزليلي‬/ ‫ التجويف المفصلي‬.2
3. articular cartilage – Hyaline cartilage
‫ الغضروف المفصلي – الغضروف الزجاجي‬.3

4. synovial fluid – viscous/ clear colorless fluid

‫ شفاف عديم اللون‬/ ‫ سائل لزج‬- ‫ السائل الزليلي‬.4

5. ligaments – give the joint reinforcement and strength

‫ تعطي التعزيز والقوة المشتركة‬- ‫ األربطة‬.5
6. Nerves – provide feelings of pain and stretch
‫ توفر مشاعر األلم والتمدد‬- ‫ األعصاب‬.6
7. Vessels - provide nutrients to joint
‫ توفير المواد الغذائية للمفصل‬- ‫ السفن‬.7

Ligaments- join bones to bones

– Consists of dense regular connective tissue.

Tendons- join muscles to bone

‫ ربط العضالت بالعظام‬-‫األوتار‬
– Consists of dense regular connective tissue.

Bursae- fibrous sac lined with synovial membrane and containing synovial fluid
‫ كيس ليفي مبطن بغشاء زليلي ويحتوي على سائل زليلي‬- ‫الجراب‬
– Occurs between bones and tendons or muscles
‫– يحدث بين العظام واألوتار أو العضالت‬
– Acts to decrease friction during movement
‫– يعمل على تقليل االحتكاك أثناء الحركة‬

1. Fatty pads – cushioning.

3. Bursae -flattened fibrous sac lined by synovial membrane.

4. Tendon sheaths -fibrous tissue connecting a muscle to a bone.
