Environmental impact assessment of wind turbines: Engineering Cycle in Georessources
and environment ST-EN07/00
Scientific Research Application on Aizpute (Western Latvia) Graduation project
Order N°: 2021
University of Sfax Realized by: Eya HADHRI - Supervised by: Ali SDIRI
National Engineering School of Sfax
Category: Innovation and sustainable development

Context Goals
This work performed in SIE ELLE • SWOT analysis and life cycle assessment for wind farms
aims to identify and evaluate the • Shadow flickering calculation on receptors
environmental impact of wind • Vizualisation of wind turbines in Aizpute wind farm with photomontage
energy farms in Aizpute

Field location Shadow flickering results

Aizpute city is located in the territory of the former The Latvian law imposes
Courland (Western Latvia), located at 56° 42′N, 21° 36′ E. that the maximum
shadow flicker rate is 30
hours per year for each
receptor.

If any receptor is above

this average wind
turbines should:
-Shut down in maximum
flickering operational
hours

Methodology -Relocate if it is
impacting many houses
and living area

Aizpute data
Insertion in
WindPro and
ArcMap The final map shows :
- The wind turbine location
- The receptor location
- The shadow flicker rate for the worst and real case

Shadow flicker on each receptor

Receptors Photomontage
identification This graphic shows the
difference between two
receptors;
Shadow
flicker
calculation -The first one is receiving
more than 8 turbines’
shadow flickering
Photomontage : How wind turbines will look like? -The second house is not
receiving any shadow
Visualization of wind turbines is an important step to flickering as it is far away
evaluating the visual impact of the Aizpute farm, the closer from turbines
the recptor is to turbines the bigger they seem to be.

This study aims to identify

the most affected living
area and to evaluate the
visual impact effect on
them.
