1 GENERAL/INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose

This standard covers the environmental, physical, electrical, mechanical, functional, regulatory and
durability requirements for metric hexagon and hexagon flanged prevailing torque type lock nuts.

1.2 Component/Commodity Description

This standard applies to all types of metric prevailing torque nuts (e.g. all metal locking, nylon insert, etc.)

1.3 Application

This standard is limited in its application to those CAD files (such as CATIA/NX), drawings or engineering
illustrations which call out this standard number, or refer to this standard within some other standard or
specification.

1.4 Hazardous Material Control

Products and processes used to manufacture the products listed in this standard must conform to the
employee and consumer health, employee safety, regulated substances, recycling and environmental
reporting requirements.

1.5 Mandatory, Recommended or Specified Tests

Mandatory or suggested tests if any provided within this standard are meant to assure compliance to the
specification but do not relieve the responsible entity from ensuring that the component or system meets
all environmental, physical, electrical, mechanical, functional, regulatory and durability requirements
including all applicable system interface requirements as described in the standard for the entire duration
of specified useful life.

1.6 Test Planning

A test plan (DVP&R) shall be developed to verify and validate all required functions specified in this
standard. The responsible entity shall provide any additional testing that’s deemed necessary to meet
functional requirements; the tables at the end of this document (Table A-1) provide summary of all the
requirements, and shall be used to develop the test planning.

Samples utilized for Design Verification (DV) shall meet specified drawings tolerance range. Samples for
Production Validation (PV) shall meet statistical capabilities for machine and manufacturing processes.

Where necessary, each line item of the test plan (DVP&R) must be supported by a comprehensive test or
laboratory procedure. A test plan (DVP&R) agreement by FCA does not relieve the responsible entity
from ensuring that the component or system meets all environmental, physical, electrical, mechanical,
functional, regulatory and durability requirements including all applicable system interface requirements,
in the entity’s area of responsibility, as described in the standard for the specified useful life.

Continuing Continuing conformance tests are used to demonstrate process compliance and
Conformance must be completed using production castings, tooling, and processes. Continuing
(Pre-Capability) conformance tests are to be done at the specified frequency, until process
capability or confidence is demonstrated per the defined test criteria. Continuing
conformance tests are to be conducted at the specified frequency, for a minimum of
three production days, or nine production runs, whichever is more stringent.
Continuing Post capability continuing conformance test program may be implemented after
Conformance successful completion of the continuing conformance requirements. Tests must be
(Post-Capability) completed with production parts on a continuing basis. Samples for these tests
must be selected on a random basis to represent the entire production population
as much as possible. In the event that any portion of these tests is not met, the
reaction plan specified in the Supplier control plan shall be invoked.

6.3 Mechanical Requirements

The screws shall conform to the requirements for prevailing and breakaway torque as outlined in Table 2.
Prevailing torque lock nuts must meet the surface discontinuity limits specified in performance standard
PF.90222<S>.

The BSR requirements shall be checked per 7.N0007 “Finish components vehicle internal/external
protections” or DS-107 “BSR Design Guidelines”.

6.3.1 Prevailing torque limits and allowances:

Prevailing Torque Tests will be conducted using Class 9.8 bolts for Class 5 and 9 Lock nuts and Class 10.9
bolts for Class 10 Lock nuts. Test bolts shall be phosphate coated per Process Standard PS-80 and shall
have threads conforming to 6g tolerances after the coating has been applied.

All nuts should be seated against hardened non-turning washers. For flanged nuts, the test washer
diameter must exceed the nut flange diameter. Threads should be lubricated with SAE-10W oil for these
tests. A new bolt and washer must be used for testing each lock nut. The same lock nut, bolt, and washer
shall be tested for locking ability throughout five installations. All nuts must permit installation, seating at
normal clamp load, and removal, five times on the mating part without thread deformation, scoring or galling
which would impair disassembly or reuse with said nut. Parts must be cooled to room temperature between
tests,

Prevailing torque is measured when the nut is in motion and shall not exceed the maximum first on value
(specified in Table 1.) at any time during any part of these tests.

Nuts shall be seated at the clamp load shown on Table 2 at each installation unless otherwise noted on the
part drawing.

The length of the test bolt should be such that seating of the lock nut shall occur when a length equivalent to
4 to 7 thread pitches of the test bolt protrudes through the top of the lock nut.
After seating at the specified clamp load the clamp load shall be completely removed by the application of
reverse torque. The lowest prevailing torque value experienced for the first and fifth off prevailing torque
shall be rotated while the lock nut is being rotated through the next one full turn. The lock nut shall then be
backed off until the prevailing torque element is disengaged from the bolt thread after each installation.

The prevailing torques must conform to Table 2 unless otherwise noted on the part drawing. In addition, the
first off prevailing torque shall not be less than 40% of the actual first on prevailing torque measured on that
particular nut.
