THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the problem and its background. It also includes

hypothesis and definition of terms.

Introduction

Studying abroad has become a global phenomenon, with millions of students

crossing countries, continents, and even oceans in efforts to search for an optimal and

ideal degree of education. Due to this worldwide occurrence, many perceive studying

overseas as an enthralling yet controversial matter. Some may see it as a primary

vehicle for building global competence, while others may view it as a perilous

challenge, they may not be willing to take. But studying abroad may take a toll on the

degree of awareness the students exhibit. According to the results of a study conducted

by JMU students, students were mostly unaware of local news information and heavily

relied on online sources the most (Internet, Facebook, etc.) stating that some

participants do not check the validity of their sources either. This study proves that the

student's level of awareness on Contemporary Issues in the Philippines should be

evaluated.

Society is transforming rapidly. In this growing and changing era, there is an

imperative need to address and infuse global awareness issues in both formal and

informal curriculum and settings. It is a pressing matter that students should be

adequately educated and aware of the current issues circulating their home country at

the very least. The current generation faces many issues related to social diversity, and

this requires them to focus more on understanding and comprehending cross cultures.
The Philippine Global School
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 2

Travis Rink (2016) stated that today's students also require an adequate amount of

knowledge on the issues correlated to the global economy, politics, social structures,

and environment in order to make the fittest judgments possible concerning their

future life after high school and beyond. Ahlgrimm, Frederika; Westphal, Andrea;

Heck, Sebastiana (2018) discovered that the majority of students believe that studying

abroad would benefit them in their careers and professions and would bring about

advancements in the subject field. According to Gita Maharaja (2018), studying

abroad can strengthen intercultural competence as well as personal development.

Students obtained a greater understanding of their own, as well as other people’s

cultures. Students also obtained a greater level of self-confidence, global mindedness,

assertiveness, self-awareness, flexibility, and adaptability.

In this study, the researchers aim to determine the extent and level of

knowledge of overseas Filipino high school students regarding the contemporary

issues in the Philippines. As the profession struggles to justify the link between study

abroad and global competence, even the characterization of what it means to be

globally competent is debated.

Statement of the Problem

The objective of this research study is to assess and identify the the level of

awareness of overseas high school students in regards to contemporary issues in the

Philippines.

The following questions were answered in this study:

1. What is the profile of the participants in terms of;

1.1. age;

1.2. sex;

1.3. grade level; and

The Philippine Global School

Table 5 displayed the weighted mean of all the answers of the participants in

each statement. The total weighted mean for the 6 th statement, “I typically hear news

about contemporary issues in the Philippines when my peers discuss them,” calculated

to a weighted mean of 2.16, with a verbal interpretation of “Either Agree or Disagree,”

placing it in rank 1.5 along with the 8 th statement, which is “I stay informed on the

contemporary issues in the Philippines through my family's discussions and

conversations.” The 12th statement, which is “I believe that the availability of

resources and materials in the UAE influences my awareness of contemporary issues

in the Philippines,” tallied up to 2.29, making its verbal interpretation “Either Agree or

Disagree” and placing it in rank 3. The 7th statement, “I generally hear news about

contemporary issues in the Philippines when I learn about them in school,” totaled up

to a weighted mean of 2.38, making its verbal interpretation “Either Agree or

Disagree” and placing it in rank 4.

The total weighted mean for the 3rd statement, “I read online news articles to be

informed on current events in the Philippines,” calculated to 2.96 with a verbal

interpretation of “Either Agree or Disagree” which places it in rank 12.5 with the 5th

statement, “I resort to news channels to be updated about the contemporary issues

circulating in the Philippines.” The 1st statement, which is “I often listen or watch the

news about the Philippines,” tallied up to a weighted mean of 2.99, making its verbal

interpretation “Either Agree or Disagree” and placing it in rank 14. The 9th statement,

“I often read/watch news concerning the current issues in the Philippines several times

a week,” totaled up to a weighted mean of 3.15, making its verbal interpretation

“Either Agree or Disagree” and placing it in rank 15.

The overall grand weighted mean of all the statements is 2.68, making its

verbal interpretation “Either Agree or Disagree.” This would suggest that the
The Philippine Global School

participants of the online survey neither completely agree nor completely disagree

with the statements which evaluates their level of knowledge and awareness regarding

the contemporary issues in the Philippines. Based on the responses, the participants are

not thoroughly informed of the current issues circulating in the Philippines but are not

obscure nor unknowledgeable about it either. Moreover, through analysis of the

results, the online survey implies that the selected students are familiar with the

situations in the Philippines through discussions within their families and peers but

generally lack the interest and sense of necessity on inquiring about the contemporary

issues in the Philippines.

Sub-problem 3. Is there a significant difference in the perception of the participants

regarding contemporary issues in the Philippines when they are

grouped according to sex?

Table 6 displays the results of the ANOVA. It shows whether or not there is a

value of the F critical value, which is 3.9129. This suggests that there is no significant

difference on the perceptions of the participants on the contemporary issues in the

Philippines when they are grouped according to sex. These results indicate that the

participants' sex does not account for nor influence their degree of knowledge and

awareness concerning the current issues in the Philippines.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of study, summary of results, conclusions

drawn, and finally, the recommendations based from the conclusions arrived at in the

course of discussing and analyzing the data.

Summary of the Study

With millions of students in search of a better and ideal degree of education,

studying abroad has become a worldwide phenomenon. But this sensation may have

an impact on the degree of awareness the students exhibit. With the current generation

facing issues with a wide variety, there stands an imperative need for students to be

adequately educated and aware of the contemporary issues in their home nation at the

very least. This study intended to determine the participants' level of awareness

regarding contemporary issues in the Philippines. Aside from identifying the selected

students’ degree of awareness, the researchers also sought to perceive the value and

benefit of acknowledging the study's findings, and seek to determine the scope and

level of knowledge of overseas Filipino high school students concerning the

contemporary issues in the Philippines.

The scope and focus of the study would be targeting the awareness of overseas

high school students’ regarding contemporary issues in the Philippines. The study's

participants would be limited to 134 high school students from Grade 9 and 10 of The

Philippine Global School in the Academic Year 2021-2022. The researchers utilized a

quantitative and descriptive approach, a research strategy that focuses on collecting

quantifiable information for statistical analysis of the population sample, to gather the
The Philippine Global School
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 14

data needed to evaluate participants’ awareness on current issues in the Philippines

despite studying abroad.

To gather data, the researchers devised an online survey questionnaire that

included information about the participant's demographic profile and their level of

perception on their degree of awareness on contemporary issues in the Philippines.

The researchers utilized a random sampling technique, a sampling approach that

enables sample selection to be randomized, with each sample having an equal

probability of being selected. A sample drawn at random is intended to be an unbiased

representation of the whole population. It promotes impartial data collecting, allowing

studies to reach objective findings. The statistical tools utilized in this study include

Slovin's formula, frequency and percentage, weighted mean, and ANOVA or Analysis

of Variance. The participants of the study included grade levels 9 and 10, with the

sample size computed based on Slovin's formula.

Summary of Results

The following are the findings after the data was subjected to statistical tools:

1. 134 students from Grade 9 and 10 participated in the online survey. The age of

these students ranged from 13 years old to 18 years old, with 15-16 years old as the

most common age range and 17-18 being the least common. As regards to sex, the

female participants outnumber the male participants with a frequency of 70 out of

134, while the male participants only had a frequency of 64. The participants of the

study include grade 9 students with a sample size of 72, making 53.73 percent of

100.00 percent, grade 10 students with a sample size of 62, making up 46.27
The Philippine Global School
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 15

percent of the 100.00 percent. There were only 3 sections, the highest number of

participants from section B with a frequency of 48, and the lowest from section A

with a frequency of 40.

2. The survey questionnaire consisted of 15 statements, with the weighted mean

ranging from 2.16 to 3.15. The sixth statement, along with the eighth statement,

was calculated with the lowest total weighted mean of 2.16 and a verbal

interpretation of “Either Agree or Disagree," which suggests that the majority of

the participants hear about contemporary issues in the Philippines when their peers

and families discuss them. On the other hand, the ninth statement tallied the

highest total weighted mean of 3.15, making its verbal interpretation "Either Agree

or Disagree" as well, indicating that although moderately aware, most of the

participants do not check news or information about the contemporary issues in the

Philippines on a regular basis and overall, generally lack the interest in inquiring

about it further.

3. The third sub-problem questioned if there was a significant difference in the

perception of the participants regarding contemporary issues in the Philippines

when they are grouped according to sex. Table 6 revealed the results of the

ANOVA, which presented the answer to the third statement. The table indicated

that the F computed value, which is 2.7063, is less than the value of the F critical

value, which is 3.9129, suggesting that there is no significant difference in the

perception of the participants when they are grouped according to sex.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the researchers came to the following

conclusions:
The Philippine Global School
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 16

1. In terms of age, 15 to 16 years old were the highest with a frequency of 72, making

up 53.73 percent out of 100.00 percent, and 17 to 18 years old being the least

common with its frequency of 1 and a percentage of 0.75 out of 100.00 percent.

Based on sex, the number of female participants, with its frequency coming to a

total of 70, is higher than the number of male participants with its frequency of 64.

According to grade level, grade 9, with a frequency of 72 is higher than grade 10,

with a frequency of 62. And out of the three sections: A, B, and C, the highest

number of participants came from Section B with a frequency of 48, while the

lowest was from Section A with a frequency of 40.

2. Based on the results drawn from the online survey, with a grand weighted mean of

2.68 and a verbal interpretation of "Either Agree or Disagree," the majority of the

participants are moderately aware and acquainted with the contemporary issues in

the Philippines. In addition, the survey displayed that the students primarily garner

information about the contemporary issues in the Philippines through discussions

with their peers and families but typically lack the sense of importance and

motivation to learn more about these contemporary issues. Furthermore, the results

also reflected that the participants do not access information via online resources,

which is perceived to be a factor in the degree of awareness the participants

showcased.

3. According to the statistics calculated from the ANOVA, there is no significant

difference in the perception of the participants when they are grouped according to

sex. As a result, the hypothesis of the researchers is disproven and the null

hypothesis is accepted.
The Philippine Global School
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 17

Recommendations

Based on the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations are hereby

offered:

1. According to the findings of our research, the majority of the students rarely

watch/listen to contemporary issues in the Philippines, with the 9 th statement

ranking 15th overall. The survey also indicates that the students seldomly resort to

news articles and news channels for their source of information. As an alternative,

schools can incorporate student programs or student bodies that focus on spreading

the news and information about contemporary issues in the Philippines.

2. From the results of the survey, the participants do not frequently watch or listen to

the news regarding contemporary issues in the Philippines. Therefore, we

recommend that families should incorporate actively watching or listening to the

news within their household routine in order to influence the students to integrate

similar habits into their daily lives.

3. Based on the results of our survey, the participants relatively believe that the

availability of resources and materials impacts and holds significance on their

awareness about contemporary issues in the Philippines. As a result, schools

should provide more materials and more opportunities that expose students to the

topic of contemporary issues in order to open the students' minds and increase their

degree of awareness, which could gradually progress to them checking and

monitoring the news regularly.

4. Due to the 4th statement, "I utilize social media to stay notified about the current

issues circulating in the Philippines," ranking 6th in the results of our survey, we

recommend the students to upload or create content relating to the contemporary

The Philippine Global School
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT 18

issues in the Philippines on their social media accounts in order to spread

awareness to their fellow peers, acquaintances, and relatives.

5. Future researchers can conduct more in-depth investigations to see an overseas

student's level of awareness about issues in the Philippines, and whether these

issues pique their interest more if they affect them personally or if they are

interested regardless of whether they are affected. Future researchers can

furthermore dwell on the study and utilize our study as reference material in order

to identify novel effects of living abroad on students' understanding of current

concerns in the Philippines.
