You must answer the discussion question.

You must also respond to two other

learners per discussion question.  You may respond to more than two learners by
responding to your initial post as well, as it will greatly add to the engagement in
the forum.

Responses to other learners should take into consideration the substance of what
they have written.  It will add greatly to the discussion if you can interject a question
pertaining to the week’s reading in your response.  A question may generate more
discussion which is beneficial to learning. Be supportive and encouraging to your
classmates.  Try to offer feedback that is meaningful to the discussion and to your
classmate.  Please use the name of the person you are replying to. That way I can
follow the discussion more easily.

Submit at least two substantive posts (responses) per discussion. These posts may
be shorter than your initial responses, but must be more significant than one-word
responses. This is your opportunity to discuss the information further with your
classmates or to discuss whether you agree or disagree and state why or why not.
Remember to stay on or at least close to the topic

Substantive means that you must take time in formulating your response, organizing
your own thoughts and incorporating the reading materials (you should be citing
parts of the book and/or other reading materials in your posts). You must
demonstrate evidence of critical thinking and prompt further discussion of the topics
among your classmates.

You must you use references, such as your text or a journal article, you must cite
references in the body of your discussion and show your reference directly after the
discussion text.  Use APA format for your references.

Please be very cognizant of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as you will lose
points for errors.

C-level postings:

 Are usually, but not always, made in a timely fashion.

 Are generally accurate, but the information delivered is limited.
 Make vague or incomplete connections between class content and posting by other
students.
 Summarize what other students have posted and contain few novel ideas.
 Show marginal effort to become involved with group.

Timely discussion contributions. Comments are meaningful and show preparedness which
reflect course readings. In-depth thought and contributions which add to the overall learning
of the other individuals in the course. Demonstrates courtesy and respect to others

Timely discussion contributions. However, overall contribution is lacking in that readings are
only sometimes incorporated into the discussions and postings do not always reflect
questions posed or topics described. Individual participated in all but ONE of the discussion
forums. Demonstrates courtesy and respect to others

Discussion postings do not contribute to ongoing conversations or respond to peers'

postings. There is no evidence of replies to questions. Discussion postings sometimes
contribute to ongoing conversations as evidenced by

— affirming statements or references to relevant research or,

— asking related questions or,

— making an oppositional statement supported by any personal experience or related

research. Discussion postings actively stimulate and sustain further discussion by building
on peers'  responses including
— building a focused argument around a specific issue or
— asking a new related question or
— making an oppositional statement supported by personal experience or related research.

Written responses contain numerous grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.  The style
of writing does not facilitate effective communication. Written responses are largely free of
grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.  The style of writing generally facilitates
communication.

I’m impressed with your ability to write concisely. Not only did you fulfill the
assignment, you also wrote a long-ish intro and answered questions that went
beyond the prompt. Doing so within the word limit and doing it well deserves
recognition. One result is that outside of the opening paragraph the entire essay
is focused exclusively on the arguments –there’s no excess fat in this essay.
Given the nature of the assignment, that’s great. As noted throughout, however,
some of your specific arguments need developed –your paper would’ve been
better served had you eliminated one of the arguments in order to better develop
the others along the lines mentioned in my comments above. Overall, it’s clear
that you understand each of the philosophers you address and you present
interesting ideas.

Work is complete but it appears rushed and unpolished. While your presented
good ideas, there is no evidence/in-text citations. If you use a source to back up
a claim, opinion or fact, you should reference where this material is from, whether
it’s a textbook, online source, or other.

You demonstrated an understanding of material as well as an ability to tie the

material to larger ideas but you need to be able to respond to your peers
comments to your posts so that you can make rich connections. Also to evoke
deep and interesting questions from your peers.

Response post points are based on meeting the requirements for the number of
response posts added to the Discussion Board, as well as the substance of those
posts. In addition to the initial post, two substantive and quality response posts
are required for each discussion topic.

You were able to post early so that you can make rich connections, evoke deep
and interesting questions from your peers.   While your presented good ideas,
there is no evidence/in-text citations. Grammatical and/or mechanical errors
frequently stop the reader’s comprehension of your writing.

Try to distribute your posting throughout the week. Add your initial post early on,
to give others a chance to respond, and then check back and respond to some of
your peers’ posts a little bit later. This gives everyone time to carry on a
discussion, rather than posting early on and leaving the Discussion Board quiet
for the rest of the week, or posting in a rush on the last day, stifling your chances
to connect to your peers.

Merlinda Ramkissoon

Your late posting did not permit students to respond as well as prevented you
from fully participating in the assignment.

The key to online discussions is engagement. You need to ensure that you
complete all aspects of the assignment.

Try not to just pop up to provide a question and answer response – you must
engage with other class members and go beyond just answering the question.
When ideas are presented they need to be developed or supported with specific
evidence and facts, as well as examples.
I need you to focus on developing a style of writing that reads in an essay format
by using full sentences and paragraphs. When you are reviewing your work, pay
close attention to Punctuation and Style errors. A part of your paper is matching
some text from the Web. Please make sure that this text is properly referenced.

Postings reflect thoughtful insight into the topic of discussion but needs
supporting references. Position is stated, rationale is provided, and opinions of
others are responded to respectfully.  Discussion postings actively stimulate and

Discussion postings respond to most postings of peers several days after the

Camoy Kerr

Discussion postings display an understanding of the required readings and

underlying concepts but do not link readings to outside references, relevant
research or specific real-life application and do not consider alternative
perspectives or connections between ideas. Sources are not cited. Improve your
postings by integrating an outside resource, or relevant research, or specific real
life application (work experience, prior coursework, etc.) to support important
points.

Discussion postings are only posted on the last day of the due date of the
assignment.

You were able to explain the reasoning behind differing points of view as well as
consider and discuss your views rationally and impartially. However, you need to
cite your sources, or relate to course material as this would invite rich
discussion. By citing readings and prior experiences this will further explains how
such references extend your insights.

Your postings tapped  into some worthwhile components but again did not
address higher-level thinking and processing -

Clayton Ogaldez
You provide much information but with limited references to readings to clarify

Your response somewhat reflects an awareness of your personal thinking as you

did not provide any sources to support your claims. Your structure, while
providing the necessary information, also provides a vague description instead
of citing readings and prior experiences to explain or extend and refine your
insights.

While you have articulated strong positions you need to provide a clear line of
reasoning to advance that perspective. This would improve the good ideas that
you have provided.

 Ackayda Stafford

The initial posting is submitted on time and addressed important components but
you need to be able to engage others in discussion. It was clear that you
attempted critical exploration with analysis and expanded ideas. Good
knowledge base presented but there is a tendency to recite facts or textual
information without citing your sources.

Remember that your responses must also consistently consist of insightful

comments, thought-provoking questions, higher-level thinking and contribute
significantly to the group discussion and the collective learning of the class.

Valene Henry

Ideas are there but not fully developed - there were some accuracy, but much
more analysis and thought is needed so that you work could reflect more
analysis and creative thought.

You have a tendency to recite facts and textual information rather than address
issues. So therefore I want to suggest that you practice explaining in detail, your
sequence of thought so that you will be able to provide a detailed analysis.

Michaldo Mitchell

There was clear and accurate background of the topic. Sources were not
identified or used to support the topic. A great set of information but there was
little adherence to the APA style of formatting in the submission. Read through
the APA guidelines so that you become familiar with the common core elements
of how to write in APA style: in particular, pay attention to general document
guidelines (e.g. text citations, quotations) Good job!

Posting reflected relevant information as required by the question posed. In your

reply posts you must be able to make connections between what you are
learning and how it can be used.
Your responses to peers should expand on the ideas of others, ask questions,
and enhance and expand the class discussion. While it’s okay to give brief
feedback to your classmates and such messages are not discouraged, you are
expected to back up your examples and opinions with sufficient evidence that
your reader will believe in what you say.
Back up your statements when you agree or disagree with others. Ensure that
you incorporate some references from literature as well as personal experience.

responding to your peer discussion posts, you need to ask probing

Your analysis made it immediately clear what area were being addressed.
Specific details are cited regarding facts and problems - however, when you use
work created by others you must identify the source and clearly differentiate your
work from the material that you are referencing. If you fail to do so you are

Melony

There was clear and thorough introduction providing an accurate background of

the topic. A good variety of sources is needed which directly related to the
question being considered.

In evaluating the question, there are several areas that you needed to consider -
these were provided in the assignment. While some paragraphs have clear
ideas, support from examples seems to be missing. When ideas are present they
need to be developed or supported with specific evidence and facts, as well as
examples. . Remember to use the APA formatting rules and correctly cite and
reference your sources with APA format.

Melissa

You were able to present and clearly demonstrate your understanding of the
topic, describing and defining the concepts correctly.  The effective use of
sources added validity to arguments. You seemed to understand the main points
of the topic and presented those with ease.

 Sattee

The initial argument was strong and compelling and presented in a clear and
coherent manner. It was well researched with  supporting references. Your
viewpoints and responses were clear in most parts but not over all you needed to
provide more examples and facts to support your reasoning. You provided
research information; used additional material beyond what was provided; and
utilized many types of resources to make your post more effective. In your
opening statement, you clearly outline your position on the issue, including any
definitions of terms. After you gave your opening statement, you immediately
make your argument. This was an excellent strategy for getting your points
across.

You did not respond to any of your peers posts or comments to your initial post.

A very impressive and informative discussion. The use of technology has

as students.

Your contribution includes all the information analysis, synthesis or evaluation

Great ideas here. Your content is complete, accurate and offers new ideas. The
discussion is well supported with details that explain the your conclusion
and encourages further discussion on topic. There is clear evidence of critical
thinking (application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation). Postings are

Proper use of academic language, clear prose, and appropriate, professional

communication was used to get your message across.  Clear connections were
made with supporting evidence but I was hoping that you would have further
discuss your assessment strategies.

What connections do you see between your point and those made to this post?

Carlyn
Some of your ideas were incomplete and I was hoping that you would have
responded to the posts here but providing two or more opinions with supporting
facts regarding the activities involved in the lesson you alluded to.

Bear in mind that you are require to make specific references to evidence in all
posts as well as show a clear link to the topics.

When replying to other posts, make it clear that students need to go beyond “I
agree” or “I disagree” by being specific about why.

Your assignment appears rushed. Please ensure that you make your posts in a
timely fashion as this will affect you grade.

Carla

Your content is complete, accurate and offers new ideas but you have not
responded to comments made to your initial post. By doing so, you would have
provided a discussion that is well supported with details that further explain the
your conclusions. It is clear that the content encourages further discussion on
topic. You need to be able to not only to encourage further responses or raise
questions but also politely offer alternative perspectives..

Lizbeth

Your post articulates a clear understanding of the scope of the problem and
issues involved. You have been able to identify embedded and implicit issues by
addressing their relationships to the thesis. Your responses clearly were stated
and by developing responses to other salient perspectives you were able to once
again state positions that were important to the analysis of the issues. This is the
main reason that I encourage students to respond to their initial post.

Valarie

Your original post demonstrates moderate evidence of critical thinking about the
topic through, for example, application or creativity.  The student’s reply post(s)
took the discussion in a new direction and I was hoping that you would have
offered a response here.  Implications and consequences of the conclusion were
reflected in context, assumptions, and supporting evidence  needs to be
acknowledged, and examined when integrating that information into the
argument.

Please pay attention to the timelines of your discussion posts and late postings
do affect your final grade.

Responding to comments to your initial post can in any  discussion forum can

help you become acquainted with another view point, and achieve critical
thinking on the topic or issue. Be sure to respond to your peers in this forum as

contribution is great in that readings are  incorporated into the discussions

Thinking Skill of Classification and Categorization reflected the  topics described.

Vanessa

Your posts showed a demonstration of an understanding of the topic of

discussion through critical thinking, higher-order thinking, and uniqueness of
contribution. I am glad that you were able to respond to comments made to you
initial posts as this showed community building through collaboration and
connection with other students. You showed proper netiquette and mechanics of
writing. I appreciate the timeliness and participation with posts/replies.

Dear Tamika

In order to receive credit, you must post your response to the posted discussion
board questions before 4 Nov 18.   In addition, you must post two responses to
another student’s post by 4 Nov 18 at midnight ET.

Your grade on the discussion board is based on participation. Each discussion

board assignment is worth 5 points.  However, in order to receive full credit for
these posts, you must fulfill the above basic requirements:

Your presentation should be professional and following APA style at all times.

Your initial post demonstrates an understanding of the discussion question/topic

but is not fully substantiated by examples from the literature. You need to ensure
that you provide responses are   interesting so that you can encourage others to
dig deeper for further comment. Pay attention to grammar and sentence
structure - your work appears rushed at times.

For full credit, making the most of this learning opportunity here is what you do:
 Make your first substantial response to the discussion question on the first
day and not the last day of the discussion (or by early on the second).
 Contribute to the discussion on three different days (or extensively on two
days).
 Your assignment was submitted late.
 Be sure to post your discussion thread well before the deadline. If you post
at the last minute, you’re not likely to get thoughtful and enlightening
responses, and you’re not making the most of your online experience.
 One way to respond to fellow students’ posts is to compare and contrast
statements from other students. Explore similarities and differences and
how they enhance the online discussion. Take a position and advocate for
your point of view.

Julien Lezama

conversation. Reference material from your textbook, class lectures, or relate
to your own life experiences when appropriate.

You could have also started your response by completing the following
sentence: “Source Data Automation is…” then support your answer with
theoretical as well as applied knowledge from your own experience.

Don’t just agree or disagree: continue the conversation! This is called

responding constructively - just like construction, you’re building upon a post.

Hughseff Laurencin

Content is complete and accurate, but lacking in new ideas, and there may be
one areas an opinion is presented without supporting facts or references. You
must take time in formulating your response, organizing your own thoughts
and incorporating the reading materials (you should be citing parts of the book
and/or other reading materials in your posts).

To get the most out of your online discussion board posts, you need to
actually have a conversation. When you’re posting, think about what you’re
saying: why do you think this way? Using sources like your textbooks or even
a journal article can boost your credibility and increase the points you earn for
your posts.

You must demonstrate evidence of critical thinking and prompt further

discussion of the topics among your classmates. You were able to
demonstrate courtesy and respect to others in your responses. Pay attention
to referencing and citing.

Merlana Ramkissoon

Your post has some very fine insights and interpretations in it. Your idea is
good, but it needs to be clear, if your argument is to be persuasive. The
arguments would be stronger with more quotation of textual evidence and/or
examples. Your initial post provided information that was factually correct but
at times it seemed to lack full development of concepts to advance further
discussion.

One way to respond to fellow students’ posts is to compare and contrast

statements from other students. Explore similarities and differences and how
they enhance the online discussion. Take a position and advocate for your
point of view, but do so respectfully.

Kezian Patrick

I’m impressed with your ability to write concisely. However, some of your
specific arguments needed developing and your post would have been better
served had you eliminated one of the arguments in order to better develop the
others along the lines mentioned. I wish the beginning of the initial post was
developed clearly. And it could have--the details are there, though not as a
strong argument.

Javia Francis

There are several interesting insights here, together with some apt analysis.
Resources and examples are included to help others learn more about the
topic/question.The weakness of the formatting interferes with the
communication of those insights and ideas. Better structure to your textual
evidence and  examples would surely help to make your writing as good as
your underlying ideas.

Your ideas are solid overall and your proposition is engaging, however, you
may need to improve your writing style to ensure that your posts are
developed properly.Once you develop the technique of using references to
literature, or the course readings, or personal experience to support
comments, I am sure that you be able to capture your audience.

Remember to always produce a Reference List and cite your sources.

Camoy Kerr

Your post was well developed and fully addressed and develops all aspects of
the task. You were able to gain adequate feedback from your peers. The
information you provided extended meaningful discussion.

The rationale behind your point of view is clear and exciting. Your post
provided very good arguments, showing good comprehension and
engagement with material outside the course.

Remember to always produce a Reference List and cite your sources.

Peter Campbell

By advocating a position, you were free to infer certain facts and state a
conclusion. Your opinion is accepted and welcomed, but you must
substantiate that opinion with supporting information.

What it is intended to be is an exchange of ideas used to promote critical

thought and an exploration of the concepts being learned. Therefore, please
feel free to bring your life experiences to the classroom. For example, I learn
from each and every post that is made to the discussion board in every class I
teach.

Clayton Ogaldez

Your posts show that you can write critically but there is always the need to
write persuasively. In an online discussion, you can apply the theory of what
you have learned and relate that information to facts but you must also state
the conclusion you’ve reached and resolved the problem. Your final statement
left with craving for a fuller understanding of the disadvantage you mentioned.

One possible approach is to use a definition of that principle to explain its core
concept. Another approach is to dissect the varying elements that make up
the principle. Pay attention to referencing and citing.

Cassandra Whyte
Your post demonstrated a high level of understanding of the concept and
substantiated with examples from research and other sources to help others
learn more about the topic/question. It is essential that you make close
reference to the text to support the point you have been making. Having an
opinion is great, but it must be based, and be shown to be based, on the
actual text itself. That can be remedied by paying attention to referencing and
citing.

Vanessa James

Yes! This ideas you present excites me, too. I was hoping that you could have
offered an example or literature to further flesh it out for readers who are
having trouble picturing the possibilities of  a a price scanner. Try to
always support your answer with theoretical as well as applied knowledge
from your own experience.

Samantha Ramrattan

Your initial post demonstrates an understanding of the discussion

question/topic but is not fully substantiated by examples from the literature.
You need to ensure that you provide responses are thorough and interesting
so that you can encourage others to dig deeper or further comment.

Introducing new, relevant ideas from resources, other than the provided class
materials, can help take learning to the next level. However, you need to
support your statements with evidence when you agree or disagree with
others. Pay attention to referencing and citing.

Valene Henry

Timely discussion contributions with comments that are somewhat meaningful

but need to show more preparedness, for example, reflect course readings.
In-depth thought and contributions are needed to add to the overall learning of
the other individuals in the course. You were able to demonstrate courtesy
and respect to others in your responses. Pay attention to referencing and
citing.

Josanne Pompey

This is a quality post! Not only did you answer all of the discussion item
components, but you applied your own experiences to solve the problem. In
addition, you framed the problem with supporting referencing and you posed a
sound example as well. This is scholarly discourse!” Introducing new, relevant
ideas from resources, other than the provided class materials, helped take
learning to the next level Always pay attention to referencing and citing.

Michaldo Mitchell

In your forum post, you created your answer to the discussion prompt by
analyzing the concept being discussed and applied it to a pattern of facts. In
your responses to your peers to justify their inquiries, you used a higher level
of thinking and problem-solving abilities. By advocating a position, you are
free to infer certain facts and state a conclusion. Your opinion is accepted and
welcomed in a forum, but you must substantiate that opinion with supporting
information. Pay attention to referencing and citing.

Ackayda Stafford

In your answer to the forum post, you were able to define and dissect the
principle being studied. One possible approach is to use a definition of that
principle to explain its core concept. Another approach is to dissect the
varying elements that make up the principle. Pay attention to referencing and
citing. Avoid general statements and make specific, well-researched
statements.

Tressan Thompson

Your forum post explored and explained the principle under study.

Your post was contributed within the deadline but with little time for
classmates to participate. Your discussion postings repeated and summarized
basic, correct information, while you did tap into some worthwhile components
you did not support important points. Critical thinking evidence exists but is
not fully formed as you need to use examples to help illustrate the concepts
under consideration. You must be able to draw connections between theory
and practice.
By referring to a third-party resource, such as a textbook or a library
reference, you support your position and lend credibility to your advocated
position. One way to respond to fellow students’ posts is to compare and
contrast statements from other students. Explore similarities and differences
and how they enhance the online discussion. Pay attention to referencing and
citing.

 Zaria Aparicio

You have made a good attempt to write this assignment. In your answer to the
forum post, you defined and dissected the principle being studied. One way to

other students. Explore similarities and differences and how they enhance the
online discussion. Take a position and advocate for your point of view, but do

It is often helpful to include outside resources in your responses. The evidence
is quite supportive overall, but it just seems a bit “disjointed” because the flow is
difficult at times to understand. Your ideas are solid overall and your proposition
is engaging, however, you may need to improve your writing style to ensure that
your posts are developed properly. Pay attention to referencing and citing.

Kinnettia Blake

I appreciate your interpretation of what Source Data Automation means.  It is

often helpful to include outside resources in your responses and you shared an
article or a website that is relevant to the topic of discussion. Introducing new,
relevant ideas from resources, other than the provided class materials, can help
take learning to the next level. However, you need to support your statements
with evidence when you agree or disagree with others. Pay attention to
referencing and citing.

 Kimberly Arjoon

You could have also started your response by completing the following sentence:
“Source Data Automation is…” then support your answer with theoretical as well

Valerie

Your posts addresses all parts of the question thoroughly and accurately and
adhere to any instructions provided. You showed original thought by presenting
facts and ideas that do not restate what others have said. You included at least
two replies to classmates that extend the conversation by adding substantive
information or insights.

Hadassah

All components of discussion prompt addressed in multiple postings; it was very

clear that readings were understood by incorporation into postings. You were
able to express yourself clearly using your own words, with minimal spelling or
grammar mistakes.
Carla

In general, the comments and ideas contribute to the group’s understanding of

the material and concepts. The work demonstrates a grasp of the main ideas and
evidence but sometimes interpretations are questionable. You have provided
quality work that reflects effort

Carlyn

Discussion contributions keep the discussion on topic and help it to develop.

While you were able to describe the teaching strategy I was hoping that you
would have provided more details on assessing such learning.

Good job on summarizing the lesson with sufficient detail so we understand what

is to be taught, the process or teaching strategy, the assessment method and
other valuable information so others can replicate the lesson or build a similar
lesson.

Lizabeth

You demonstrated the ability to analyze and synthesize, independent analysis,

good use of a range of supportive material. Discussion postings display an
understanding of the required readings and underlying concepts including correct
use of terminology and proper citation. You made meaningful  comments on other
student work.

Brent

Your discussion postings display an excellent understanding of the required

readings and underlying concepts including correct use of terminology. Postings
contribute to the class' ongoing conversations as evidenced by affirming
statements or references to relevant research or, answering related

in the viewpoints of others. Written responses are largely free of grammatical,
spelling or punctuation errors. The style of writing generally facilitates
communication.

Ena-Mae

You were able to demonstrates good ability to analyze other student work, and
respond meaningfully to extending questions. Your post and responses show
evidence of knowledge and understanding of course content and applicability to
education but do not link readings to outside references, relevant research and

I agree that "while the plan encourages students to engage in discovery learning
while being actively involved. It could be enhanced by the use of integrating
ICT."  Your postings produced good general answers but did not always directly
address discussion questions. You were able to posts information that is factually
correct; but it lacks full development of concept and required strategies.

Amanda

Your comments made indicate an understanding of the major concepts studied,

attends to the discussion topic at hand, stays focused and are relevant to the
discussion. Your responses are respectful of others and their views.

Carl

There is clear evidence of critical thinking-application, analysis, synthesis, and

evaluation. Postings are characterized by clarity of argument, depth of insight
into theoretical issues, originality of treatment, and relevance.Posts are well
articulated and understandable. It is evident that your had read and reflected
upon the assigned readings prior to entering into the online discussion with your
peers.

Aria

Critical thinking evidence exists but is not fully formed. Several tangential issues
need addressing. Some accuracy is there, but much more analysis and thought
needed so that the reader can understand the role ICT plays in it. Your postings
tap into some worthwhile components but don’t address higher-level thinking and
processing of the students. Written interactions on the discussion board show
respect and interest in the viewpoints of others.

Tamika

Critical thinking evidence exists but is not fully formed. Several tangential issues

There is clear evidence of critical thinking application, analysis, synthesis, and

The most important literature has been outlined and located in an appropriate
context. There are no significant omissions, and the essential points of the
sources are brought out and related to reveal a good general overall grasp of the
topic in question.  However, you need to pay attention to formatting your
document for presentation and ease of reading.
Saraswatee

Your lesson plan definitely grabbed my attention! You've done an excellent job
combining all of what we've discussed in the Unit. The post is well organized,
achieving a good balance between context, research, discussion, analysis and
synthesis. The English, including style and spelling, is good throughout.

Javia

Excellent work. Your discussion postings actively stimulate and sustain further
discussion by building on peers'  responses including building a focused
argument around a specific issue and asking a new related question.

You were able to ensure that your initial postings were completed early in the
week. Your follow up posts (generally more than the minimum of one per
discussion) were done in a timely fashion. I am pleased that you were able to
respond to posts made to your initial posts as well.

Kimberly

Excellent work. You were able to provide a thoughtful reflection (personal

feelings and application of the topic) and critical analysis of the topic. You added
to the comments of your classmates by explaining how the classmate’s post
impacted you and offering an alternative viewpoint to the class. I like the fact that
you have your discussion postings distributed throughout the week (not posted

I’m impressed with your ability to write concisely. Your initial demonstrated
interest in the topic and showed adequate knowledge of the issues, but some of

I’m impressed with your ability to write concisely. However, some of your specific

Moving forward, always discuss and apply textual evidence and/or examples and
you'll have a great post. The key to online discussions is engagement. You need
to ensure that you complete all aspects of the assignment.

Hi Samantha

Your post is well substantiated with judicious examples but you also needed
textual evidence. I admire the way you made your posts to be of high quality,
when you offer strong connections between personal examples but remember to
refer to the text especially when defining terms. Your initial post is strong, but still
needs some revisions. When you are reviewing your work, pay close attention to
producing a correct Reference List and citing your sources.

Kinnettia

Your post provided information that was factually correct but at times it seemed
to lack full development of concepts to advance further discussion. While your
comments were  clear, they needed to be supported with specific details relevant
to the discussion assignment. You need to develop the technique of using

There are several interesting insights here, together with some apt analysis.

Your post addressed the topic and accurately presented your viewpoints by
providing sufficient textual evidence to support the argument. The entire post is
logically organized and has a solid argument with supporting evidence

Julien

Your post provided some viable points, but the points  needs more structure for
its argument if you want to convince the reader. Once you develop the technique
of using references to literature, or the course readings, or personal experience
to support comments, I am sure that you be able to make implausible arguments
to capture your audience.

Your posting responds to the question but does not stimulate further discussion
based on your personal experiences or the use of the literature to add credit to
your ideas and understanding. While you offered a thoughtful, insightful analysis,
no course connections, or connections to materials from outside the course are
mentioned. Your own comments show an awareness of what has been and is
being discussed by other members of the class.

Participation in discussion activities can only be measured by the date on the

Is it plagiarism if you…

(circle an answer)

1. Copy and paste a paragraph of text from a web site without Yes No
enclosing it in quotation marks and referencing the source?

2. Use the ideas of another author without providing a reference Yes No

even if you write them in your own words?
3. Claim work produced by another student as your own? Yes No
4. Copy a diagram or data table from a web site, providing a Yes No
reference for the source underneath?
5. Submit all or part of one essay for two separate assignments? Yes No
6. Copy words from a book into your own work, but place Yes No
quotation marks around them and provide a citation?
7. Include a fact or saying in your assignment which is generally Yes No
known without referencing the original source?
8. Incorporate text from another source, changing one or two Yes No
words and providing a citation?

Solutions

1. Yes This is probably the most well known form of plagiarism. When you
copy the exact words from another source you must enclose them
in the quotation marks and provide a reference.

2. Yes Even if you do not directly copy the author's words you must
provide a reference when you talk about their ideas.

3. Yes This is a form of plagiarism. Buying, stealing or copying an essay to

produce your work is plagiarism. Collaborating with another student
(unless requested by your tutor) is also plagiarism.
4. No You can include a table, diagram or image from another source as
long as you provide a reference.
5. Yes Although this may surprise you, self-plagiarism is a form of
plagiarism and is not permitted.
6. No It is not plagiarism to copy words from another source as long as
you place them in quotation marks and provide a reference.
7. No If a fact is generally well known or 'common knowledge' then you
don't need to reference it. Bear in mind that what you consider to
be common knowledge may not be well known to others, if in doubt
provide a reference.

8. Yes If you do not intend to quote directly from the source, you must
write about it in your own words. Using too many words from the
original source is plagiarism, even if you provide a reference.

You were able to provide a thoughtful reflection (personal feelings and

application of the topic) and critical analysis of the topic.

I admire the way you made your posts to be of high quality, when you offer
strong connections between personal examples but remember to refer to the text
and offer more analytic ideas as well. Remember to always produce a Reference

Great work on your first graded discussion.  The content you provided often
encouraged further discussion on the topic or follows up on others' thoughts. I
want to encourage you to cite and reference your work correctly. You were
certainly able to demonstrate an understanding of the material assigned and use
references to literature and personal experience to support comments.

Mickha

I am pleased that you were able to respond to posts made to your initial posts as
well. The content you offered was complete, on -point, thoughtful and offered

Your post provided some viable points, but the points  repeat and summarize
basic, correct information, but do not link readings to outside references, relevant

Your post provided some viable points, but the points are presented randomly at

Great work on your first graded discussion. You were able to ensure that your
initial postings were completed early in the week. Your follow up posts (generally
more than the minimum of one per discussion) were done in a timely fashion. I
am pleased that you were able to respond to posts made to your initial posts as
well. The content you offered was complete, on -point, thoughtful and offered
new ideas. Your discussion postings actively stimulate and sustain further
discussion by building on peers'  responses including building a focused
argument around a specific issue and asking a new related question. While your
supporting details were abundant and appropriate I want to suggest that you
always cite your sources to add credibility to your statements.

Merlinda

Well done on your first discussion post. Your discussion postings actively
stimulate and sustain further discussion by building on peers'  responses
including building a focused argument around a specific issue and asking a new
related question. You may also add to the quality of your posts by  making an
oppositional statement supported by personal experience or related research.

Peter

Your post provided information that was factually correct but at times it seemed
to lack full development of concepts to advance a further discussion. There were
some signs of disorganization with expression this led to a bit of difficulty in
getting your points across.
Once you develop the technique of using references to literature, or the course
readings, or personal experience to support comments, I am sure that you be
able to capture your audience.

Ackayda

A good attempt at your first graded discussion. Your  postings sometimes

contribute to ongoing conversations as evidenced by affirming statements or
references to relevant research and asking related questions. In future, you may
add to the quality of your repsonses by making an oppositional statement
supported by any personal experience or related research.

Hughseff

Your discussion postings display an understanding of the required readings and

underlying concepts including correct use of terminology. However, you should
also integrate an outside resource, or relevant research, or specific real-life
application (work experience, prior coursework, etc.) to support important points.
Discuss and apply textual evidence and/or examples and you'll have a greater
post.

Josanne

Your discussion postings display an understanding of the required readings and

underlying concepts including correct use of terminology. However, you should
also integrate an outside resource, or relevant research, or specific real-life
application to support your list of embedded systems.

Michelle

Your initial post showed evidence of understanding most major concepts but you
need to be able to offer an occasional divergent viewpoint or challenge; as well
as show some skill in support for opinions.  There were some signs of
disorganization with expression this led to a bit of difficulty in getting your points
across.

Mackisha

I like the fact that your postings were characterized by originality, engagement
and relevance to the topic. You were certainly able to demonstrate an
understanding of the material assigned and familiarity with the ideas of the
students (in other words, it's obvious that you've read and understood both the
required reading assigned and what your peers have written in their postings).

Clayton

Your post addressed the topic and accurately presented your viewpoints by
providing sufficient textual evidence to support the argument. The entire post is
logically organized and has a solid argument with supporting evidence

Kinnettia

I’m impressed with your ability to write concisely. This is a good post with a clear
central idea. Once you add to you referencing with personal experience to
support comments, I am sure that you be able to capture your audience. Your
post did provide very good arguments, showing good comprehension and
engagement with material outside the course.

Michaldo

There are several interesting insights here, but you did not provide us with an apt
analysis. The weakness of the writing using a list, interferes with the
communication of those insights and ideas. A better structure for your post would
have been to provide textual evidence and examples to make your writing as
good as your underlying ideas.

Tressan

A novel approach to the assignment that addressed the topic and accurately

presented your viewpoints by providing sufficient evidence to support the
arguments by your peers. The rationale behind your point of view is clear and
exciting.

Very persuasive and interesting job.

Kenneth

There are several interesting insights here, together with some apt analysis. The
weakness of the writing interferes with the communication of those insights and
ideas. You need to pay attention to sentence structure and paragraphing to make
it clearer in some places that you are transitioning to a different point or idea.
Overall a good post.

Valene
I’m impressed with your ability to write concisely. Your post has some very fine
insights and interpretations in it. Your idea is good, but it needs to be clearer, if
your argument is to be persuasive. The organization and discussion could be
improved quite a bit, to make it clearer in some places the point of view you are
demonstrating.

Charissa

There are several interesting insights here, together with some apt analysis. The
weakness of the writing interferes with the communication of those insights and
ideas. Better structure to your textual evidence and  examples would surely help
to make your writing as good as your underlying ideas.

Julien

Your post provided information that was factually correct but at times it seemed
to lack full development of concepts to advance a further discussion. Once you
develop the technique of using references to literature, or the course readings, or
personal experience to support comments, I am sure that you be able to garner
meaningful discussion from your peers.

Cassandra

Your post is well substantiated with judicious examples but you also needed
textual evidence. It like the way you made your posts to be of high quality, when
you offer strong connections between personal examples but remember to refer
to the text and offer more analytic ideas as well. Remember to always produce a
Reference List and cite your sources.

Keron

Your post demonstrated unusually excellent independent thinking and made an

implausible argument supporting your opening statement. Furthermore, you
ended with a strong closing statement to stamp home your point.

Remember to always to refer and produce a Reference List and cite your
sources.

Merlana

Your post provided some viable points, but the points are presented randomly at
times; it needs more structure for its argument if you want to convince the reader.
Once you develop the technique of using references to literature, or the course
readings, or personal experience to support comments, I am sure that you be
able to capture your audience.

Kenseha

Your post provided very good arguments, showing good comprehension.

However, you must show engagement with materials from outside the course
and share personal experiences to solidify your argument. Remember to always
produce a Reference List and cite your sources.

Vanessa

Your post was well developed and fully addressed and develops all aspects of
the task. You were able to gain adequate feedback from your peers. The
information you provided extended meaningful discussion. Please remember to
adhere to the word count guidelines, this will mean acquiring the art of writing
concisely.

Class

Referencing the above query and other messages received, please note the
following:

This is assignment: 1st Graded Discussion (10%) - Word Processing - Due Date:

September 29, 2018, 11PM ECT - NOW OPEN!!! Forum

The assignment is due 29 September 2018 at 2300hrs. This means that all
submissions must be completed by that said date and time.

The assignment is a discussion and therefore student success rely heavily on

each student's early contribution and timely responses. I have indicated
numerous times the requirements for successful discussion posts. I have also
encourage you many times to make your initial posts early so that others can
read and respond to it in a timely fashion as well as giving them adequate time to
respond to any questions or comments you may post.

My email clearly expressed that date that assignment is due and that it has not
changed. It clearly reiterated Mr, Forde's statements that no extensions will be
granted and that posts after the due date will not be acknowledged.

I recognized from that some students desire, was to make all three posts on
Friday night or on Saturday as that was their available time. In the interest of
fairness, to ensure that posts are not all made between 28 - 29 September,
despite my many calls to action, I furnished you with timings to ensure that you
make your initial post by Thursday midday, respond to your peers posts by
Friday and by Saturday complete the assignment by responding to another
colleague or to a response to your posts.

Please recognize the unfairness of encouraging you to post the day before or on
the day on the assignment. As you have been posting throughout the week for
your ungraded discussions posts, the same is expected moreso with your graded
discussions.

Also, bear in mind that graded discussions are the same format as ungraded
discussions and therefore you are not required to upload a word document to the
forum.

I hope I have clarified the issue and express the expectations of what will be
required for the upcoming discussions - both graded and ungraded.

Thank you for reaching out.

Regards

Dreana

Roxanne

Another component that enriches and enlivens the Discussion Board experience
is responding to fellow classmates' posts.

Ultimately, the goal is to open up discussion, to respectfully disagree (if you

disagree), to expand upon the writer’s point if you agree, and to contribute more
ideas than just “I like this post.” After all, discussion board threads are just like
conversations: imagine what would happen in a conversation if one person
asserted an argument and the others just said, “I agree.” The conversation would
die.

The benefit of discussion boards is they enable the people involved in the
conversation to consider their responses before posting them. So use that
dynamic of the virtual world to your advantage: respond thoughtfully, engaging
with the digital conversation.

My timely feedback will demonstrate not only a respect for your time but also
contribute to your experience and dynamic engagement in the course. I will be
sure offer them specific examples of areas in which you excelled and areas fir
you  to concentrate on for further development.

You can help ensure a successful learning experience by practicing proactive

course management strategies. As you will see from my guidelines to other
students, the key to effectively managing an online course is to be consistently
"present" in your online classroom. Regular contact with me and other students
helps assure that you are well-supported.

Melissa

I will do my best to be available and responsive to your needs as the course

progresses...you will soon learn that my expectations for your involvement - and
eventual success - are high. But I also expect the same from my own
involvement and endeavour to be 'present' to help you in whatever way you need
during the course. Contrary to how an electronic medium may feel, I am a real
human being who expects to teach, learn from and communicate with other real
human beings - so please feel very comfortable as you join us here.

My expectations of you as a student participating in this course, is to show that

you are capable of managing your time as efficiently as possible. I am going to
give you the opportunity to prove that you can be self motivated to successfully
complete this programme. This means that I expect that you will show a high
level of responsibility and ability to complete a task without having to be
pressured by my constant supervision.

Successful learners can be considered as those persons who voluntarily seek

further education, have higher expectations, be more self-disciplined, older, enjoy
learning for its own sake, demonstrate good thinking skills, able to work
independently with limited structure, and recognize the value of interacting with
other online peers.

I am expecting you to be a successful learner.

Brent

My expectations of you as a student participating in this course, is remain a

successful learner by being self-disciplined, demonstrating good thinking skills,
and foremost, being able to work independently with limited structure, and
recognize the value of interacting with other online peers.

1. Do set aside a specific time during the day for this course--the best time that
fits your schedule. Use this time for preparation and for participation (reading,
studying, posting messages, completing assignments, taking quizzes).

2. Do check in and contribute to the class several times a week. By doing this
you will keep engaged, on-track, and moving steadily toward your goal!

3. Do remember there are people here to help you to be successful in online

learning.

4. Don't put off the work! You need to keep up so you can more effectively
participate in group and class discussions.

5. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There are probably several others who are
wondering the same thing.

The responsibilities of a student participating in this course, is to show that they

are capable of managing their time as efficiently as possible.

Although I am your instructor, we are all learning in this course and, because of
this, I rely on you and everyone in the course to create a rich and shared learning
environment. In your role as a student, I expect the following from you:

·         Ask for what you need from your instructor. Your instructor trusts you to
meet your learning needs. If you have a question, ask for clarification. If you feel
lost or confused, ASK!

·         Have high standards for your work, thoughtfully consider feedback, and
take responsibility for improving the areas in which you experience difficulty.

·         Stay on top of your reading assignments and develop your research and
analysis skills. Assume that taking initiative on your part will be positively
received and will maximize your learning.

The reality is the online learner must take on more responsibility and ownership
of the learning process. We are committed to providing an online experience that
is relevant and will prepare you for your chosen career.

Even though participating in a distance programme can be done with flexibility,

you should always take an active approach to learning if you want to be
successful in your course.

Flexibility is considered as one of the greatest benefits of distance learning but at

the same time it can also be a disadvantage for a student who procrastinates, or
is unable to maintain a study schedule, or who is unable to without reminders,
complete assignments on time.

Continue to be dedicated, self-motivated, disciplined and manage your time

properly. This also require you to be active in online discussions/chats,submit all
assignments in a timely manner as well as participate in group tasks..

The work in an online course can pile up pretty quickly. The most successful
online students are those who manage their time well and take a proactive
approach to completing coursework. Don't procrastinate. Develop a weekly
schedule and stick to it. It can be scary, but you need to be able to gauge exactly
how much you have to do.

Make a pact with yourself not to get any farther behind while you work on
catching up. Set aside time every day to gather all upcoming assignments and
make a detailed plan for how you will complete them. This is showing
responsibility and will get you motivated to get caught up.

Explain what may have lead you to fall behind and ask what you can do to get
caught up. I may be able to connect you additional resources based on your
needs.

I recommend you fully employ the following expectations, giving yourself every
opportunity to be successful in this course.

 Be an active, engaged participant in the virtual classroom, typically logging

in 4-7 days a week
 Be able to use technology effectively
 Be able to complete assignments by stated deadlines
 Be able to use written communication effectively
 Be able to work with others in completing projects, as necessary

When assistance is needed, it is expected that you find a solution to your

Amanda

Because of the nature of online learning, your commitment is needed to ensure

individual and group success. My expectations of you include:

·             Developing a study plan or schedule that allows for sufficient time to
participate in class sessions and complete coursework.

·             Reading the assigned text material so that you can participate in class
discussion and bring up any questions you may have.

·             Getting actively involved in chat and online course activities -- including
Discussion Boards. (Please plan to participate regularly and with postings of
substance (quality and quantity). You will note in the grading policy that your
Discussion Board participation counts towards your final grade.)

·             Completing assignments, quizzes, and other learning activities by the
due date to allow your instructor adequate time to review your work and provide
feedback

This plan should help you meet your expectations of an "A" grade.

There are further expectation and other guidelines for your participation in this
course:

1. You will be asked to spend more time generating and participating in

discussions with me and the other students. These discussions, in which
you will respond to other students' comments, play a central role in the
learning experience.
2. If you are assigned to participate in team projects, your team members will
rely on you to participate and contribute to the projects.
3. You must be responsible for keeping up with the workload so that you can
be an active participant in online discussions.

As your etutor, I will guide you, direct you to information and content, and share
current developments in this course of study. I will ask you to read, watch videos,
participate in thoughtful discussions, and help create a learning community. We
are all learning in this course and, because of this, I rely on you and everyone in

Welcome

I understand that as a student enrolled in this online course, one of the benefits
you are seeking is the flexibility to manage your coursework in addition to all of
the other responsibilities you have on your plate.

If you are experiencing difficulty on any level (either with the technology or with
the course content), you must explicitly communicate about your issues in a
timely manner; otherwise, no one will know you are struggling or have an
opportunity to help resolve the situation so that you can reach success.

Your earlier academic work may have encouraged a surface or strategic

approach to studying. These approaches will not be sufficient (or even
appropriate) for successful independent study at this level. Independent study
requires a deep approach to studying, in which students must understand ideas
and be able to apply knowledge to new situations. Students need to generate
their own connections and be their own motivators.

Communicating your ideas effectively and sharing your perspective throughout

the term will help you and your classmates learn from one another.

Establishing expectations before you begin can eliminate unnecessary

misunderstandings concerning goals, deadlines, individual roles, etc. For

expectancy, individual roles.

Welcome...

Managing your expectations is an important task but you can be assured that
as competent leaders in education at doctoral level, that both the CC and I will do
everything possible to ensure that you reach your dreams and find success
beyond this course.

But of course, you also have to do your part.

Online students must be active learners, self-starters who are not shy or afraid to
ask questions when they do not understand. Remember that you, not us, must
be in control of your learning process.

Remember that we will not be the only source of information. Most of the time
you will be able to post your question in the discussion forum and your
classmates will help you as well.

I am looking forward to sharing with you.

Welcome to the class!

I will be sure to offer you a positive attitude and be respectful of your diverse
perspective and learning style. I am here to support you in your educational
endeavors in any way possible.

Be sure to  log into  the online learning system, as “attendance” is determined by
student engagement with the classroom tools, with other students, and with
me.Through regular communications with other students, observations of their
discussions with one another in discussion forums, reading notes they share
publicly with one another, and so on, you will likely be surprised at how you are
able to connect with your students and learn about them as individuals in ways
you had not envisioned!

Hi Lewty

Welcome

Teaching and learning in an online environment is not easy in many ways - but
that of course depends mainilgy on your contribution to your own success.  Time
and effort are required to ensure a successful experience is had by you.  For this
reason, I too have high expectations for myself and my students.

As a student, should you find that I am not meeting your expectations, please
speak up!  The sooner we know there is a potential issue to be addressed, the
more that can be done about it. Communicating your ideas effectively and
sharing your perspective throughout the term will help you and your classmates
learn from one another.

expectations for your involvement - and eventual success - are high. But I also
expect the same from my own involvement and endeavour to be 'present' to help
you in whatever way you need during the course.

Your presence in the course will be apparent only if you contribute to discussions
and do the online assignments. Also, as stated before, it is crucial that you keep
up to date by reading all lecture materials and posted comments before
participating in the online discussions. I am expecting you to be successful in this
course.

Etutor's My Expectations

Welcome to your online class! I look forward to learning about you and sharing
with you the passion I have for this subject and course of study. As your
instructor, I will guide you, direct you to information and content, and share
current developments in this course of study. I will ask you to read, watch videos,
participate in thoughtful discussions, and help create a learning community.
Although I am your instructor, we are all learning in this course and, because of
this, I rely on you and everyone in the course to create a rich and shared learning
environment.

As a student, you may expect that I will:

 Provide current and relevant course information and resources.
 Respect your level of skill, knowledge and resources and invite you to
share with the class.
 Provide feedback.
 Provide instructions, due dates, and evaluation criteria that are as clear as
possible.
 Respond to your emails or messages as described in the course syllabus.

In your role as a student, I expect the following from you:

 Enter your course frequently to check for announcements, new discussion

posts, and due dates.
 Keep me up to date with issues that impact your ability to meet assignment
due dates, etc.
 Don’t let technical problems wait.
 Ask questions! I expect that you know what you need and that you will ask
for clarification or assistance when you need it.
 Commit to excellence! You will benefit from a job well done.

Good Luck,

Dreana

Hi Tressan

I hope that you do meet your expectations and more. On your way to achieve
your A+ allow me to share with you, an expectation that I hod high for myself and
my students.

Self-presentation is based on the following premise: Your ability to succeed in

your interests is dependent upon the extent to which you demonstrate your
knowledge, your initiative, and your likelihood to succeed.

I expect that your presentation of work as a creative professional requires that

you create an advertisement of you. Not a literal advertisement, but rather a
concise message, that shows that you are meeting your goals, and all you have
accomplished and learned in the pursuit of this course.

Whether it is your posts, or your actual physical appearance, constant effort to be

well-presented is a necessity; this may be as simple as running a spell-check or
formatting or not using all capitals.
I expect my students to some time on the packaging their product. Please pay
attention to the presentation of your work so that we won't miss the true meaning
of what you intend to say. I am sure that you will be sharing some excellent
insights and comment with us and I certainly looking forward to your meaningful
contributions.

Good luck with the course.

Shantell

Be prepared for the amount of time that online learning takes and make time for it
in your week.

Due to the less structured nature of the class, plan time to study.

The CC prepared a detailed syllabus and outline of the course expectations. Be

sure to read and understand these documents.

Log on to your courses frequently and timely. Look for announcements, check
the calendar, look for new discussion posts, check for course messages, and
participate in the class.

Make sure you ask your family and friends for their support. You will need time to
complete your work in this course - time you may have to take away from them.
Share your time management plan with them so they understand the demands
on your life now.

Timely communication is important. You are still expected to submit assignments

and discussion posts on time. However, if for some reason you are unable to
meet the deadline, contact me immediately, usually by email or a message within
the course, to discuss your situation.

The Task of the Assignment

by Debra Marshall-Stuart - Sunday, 2 September 2018, 9:51 AM

Given your instructor’s efforts, it helps to answer the question: What is my

purpose in completing this assignment? Is it to gather research from a variety of
outside sources and present a coherent picture? Is it to take material I have been
learning in class and apply it to a new situation? Is it to prove a point one way or
another? Key words from the assignment can help you figure this out. Look for
key terms in the form of active verbs that tell you what to do.
Key Terms: Finding Those Active Verbs

Here are some common key words and definitions to help you think about
assignment terms:

Information words

 ask you to demonstrate what you know about the subject, such as who,
what, when, where, how, and why.

 define—give the subject’s meaning (according to someone or something).

Sometimes you have to give more than one view on the subject’s meaning
 describe—provide details about the subject by answering questions words
(such as who, what, when, where, how, and why); you might also give
details related to the five senses (what you see, hear, feel, taste, and
smell)
 explain—give reasons why or examples of how something happened
 illustrate—give descriptive examples of the subject and show how each is
connected with the subject
 summarize—briefly list the important ideas you learned about the subject
 trace—outline how something has changed or developed from an earlier
time to its current form
 research—gather material from outside sources about the subject, often
with the implication or requirement that you will analyze what you have
found

Relation words

 ask you to demonstrate how things are connected.

 compare—show how two or more things are similar (and, sometimes,
different)
 contrast—show how two or more things are dissimilar
 apply—use details that you’ve been given to demonstrate how an idea,
theory, or concept works in a particular situation
 cause—show how one event or series of events made something else
happen
 relate—show or describe the connections between things

Interpretation words

 ask you to defend ideas of your own about the subject. Do not see these
words as requesting opinion alone (unless the assignment specifically says
so), but as requiring opinion that is supported by concrete evidence.
Remember examples, principles, definitions, or concepts from class or
research and use them in your interpretation.
 assess—summarize your opinion of the subject and measure it against
something
 prove, justify—give reasons or examples to demonstrate how or why
something is the truth
 evaluate, respond—state your opinion of the subject as good, bad, or
some combination of the two, with examples and reasons
 support—give reasons or evidence for something you believe (be sure to
state clearly what it is that you believe)
 synthesize —put two or more things together that have not been put
together in class or in your readings before; do not just summarize one and
then the other and say that they are similar or different—you must provide
a reason for putting them together that runs all the way through the paper
 analyze—determine how individual parts create or relate to the whole,
figure out how something works, what it might mean, or why it is important
 argue—take a side and defend it with evidence against the other side

Your instructor wants you to think about something in a particular way for a
particular reason. If you read the course description at the beginning of your
syllabus, review the assigned readings, and consider the assignment itself, you
may begin to see the plan, purpose, or approach to the subject matter that your
instructor has created for you. If you still aren’t sure of the assignment’s goals, try
asking the instructor.

TIPS FOR KEEPING UP!

Here are some tips moving forward...

Check the News Forum for messages from the CC - This is where you will find
factual information on assignments and activities regarding the course. Here you
will also find updated information regarding BBC meetings etc. The information is
the forum is that which you will follow.

Use the student-tutor forum - Post your messages and questions to the e-tutor
(and CC) in this forum. Check back with 24 hours to see if there is a response to
your post. Also, check the other posts made by your class mates as you may find
the response to your query in my reply to them.

Check your email and online messages regularly - Use the student-tutor forum to
post your queries. This is your first line of action.

The work in an online course can pile up pretty quickly. The most successful
online students are those who manage their time well and take a proactive
approach to completing coursework. Don't procrastinate. Develop a weekly
schedule and stick to it. Here are some ways to help you get caught up with
everyone in your class.

 Make a list of what you've missed. It can be scary, but you need to be
able to gauge exactly how much you have to do.
 Make a plan for how you're going to do this missed work. Dedicate at
least two hours a day to doing old assignment, and you'll probably be
caught up in at least two weeks.
 Hand in all upcoming work on time. Make a pact with yourself not to get
any farther behind while you work on catching up. Set aside time every day
to gather all upcoming assignments and make a detailed plan for how you
will complete them. This is showing responsibility and will get you
motivated to get caught up. This is also helpful so you don't get behind
anymore and avoid receiving zero grades.
 Talk to your tutor honestly. Explain what may have lead you to fall
behind and ask what you can do to get caught up. Your tutor may be able
to connect you additional resources based on your needs.
 Talk honestly to other students in the class as to why you are really
behind. Someone else may be having the same trouble as you are? Who
might be able to help you? It's worth it to put yourself on the line to get this
extra support. You might realize that the class is hard for everyone, and
their strategies for keeping up may assist you.
 Many people who have never taken an online class mistakenly
assume that it will take less time than a traditional, on-campus class.
This is not true. An online class can be just as demanding and time
consuming. Some students find that online classes actually require more
time. The only time savings you can expect is the time you would have
otherwise spent commuting. And an online class does make it much easier
for you to choose WHEN you do your coursework.

Don't be ashamed about falling behind. It happens to everyone, and the

important thing is that you need to deal with it now. If you find yourself falling
behind again, get in touch with your instructor before and not after it happens.

How to prepare your discussions to promote class participation

by Debra Marshall-Stuart - Thursday, 6 September 2018, 7:40 AM

Responding to your classmates in the discussion forum is an essential part of

online courses. In the discussion forum, students have the chance to interact with
one another and share their individual points of view. Although responding to
your classmates’ posts may seem like a simple task, many students have a
difficult time writing thoughtful responses which promote discussion and student
interaction. If you find yourself writing responses such as “Nice work! I agree with
everything you said!” use the tips below to improve the quality of your responses
and promote meaningful conversation:

• Ask open-ended questions to promote discussion. Open-ended questions

require individuals to write more than a simple one- or two-word answer. Open-
ended questions require the use of critical thinking skills and allow individuals to
reflect on their thoughts and feelings about a particular topic.

• Don’t be afraid to disagree. It is okay to disagree with what someone has to

say or play the "devil’s advocate." However, when you choose to disagree,
remember to do so respectfully. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it is
okay for you to offer your own interpretation.

• Give reasons for your opinion. It is important to provide reasons for your
thoughts and feelings about the topic. You may even choose to make a personal
connection or share a personal experience with your classmates. Applying class
information to real-world situations is a great way to demonstrate that you truly
understand what you are learning.

• Think outside the box. Online discussions can get boring when everyone’s
posts begin to sound the same. Don’t be afraid to propose a new idea or ask a
probing question to generate conversation.
• Include outside resources. It is often helpful to include outside resources in
your responses. Share an article or a website that is relevant to the topic of
discussion. Introducing new, relevant ideas from resources, other than the
provided class materials, can help take learning to the next level.

Remember, the online discussion forum is a place for you, your classmates, and
your instructor to exchange information. Be open minded to others ideas, but feel
free to express your own opinion as well.  Following these tips can help you and
your classmates engage in more meaningful online conversations. And as
always, be sure to post your responses on time.

I will be reading all messages and I will participate in the discussion as

appropriate. Students may work ahead on the current discussion boards but
posting on the past week's boards will not allow for stimulating discussions with
your classmates.

Class participation is an important expectation of this course. Students are

expected to offer comments, questions, and replies to the discussion question
that has been posed for each module as well as to classmate postings. Students
are expected to actively participate in each discussion throughout the semester.
