PART 1: AVIATION TOPICS
Part One: “Aviation Topics”. In this part, you have to answer questions related to aviation. You
should take approximately one minute to answer each question and I will tell you when to stop if
necessary.

1) How was your first check ride?

2) How is medical exam for pilots conducted? Give some details.

3) What is your opinion about the future of communication between pilots and controllers?

Possible follow- up questions to be asked if necessary:

Can you say that once again, please?
Can you tell me a little bit more about that?
Can you give me an example/or some examples?
Why? / Why not? / How?

Thank you. That is the end of Part One. Let’s now move on to Part Two.

PART 2: INTERACTING AS A PILOT

Part Two: “Interacting as a Pilot”. In this part you have to interact with the Air Traffic Control in five
different situations. You may ask the controller to say again once (and you will not be penalized for that).
After listening to the controller, you should interact as the pilot. All information is important.

You are the pilot of a twin-engine aircraft. Your call sign is ANAC 123.

Please put the headphones on. Let ́s check the volume.

PART 3 – UNEXPECTED SITUATIONS

Part Three: “Unexpected Situations”. In this part of the test, you will listen to three different
communications between pilots and air traffic controllers. The recordings will be played twice. There is a
five-second pause before the recording is repeated. After listening to the recording, you should tell me
everything that the pilot and the controller said. I will then ask you a question.

At the end of Part 3, I will ask you to compare the three situations, so please take notes.

Do you have any questions?

Situation 1) Listen to Situation number One:

11 PILOT: BUDAPESTE CONTROL, ROYAL AIR 567. [WE HAVE A HYDRAULIC FAILURE HERE].
[HYDRAULIC PRESSURE IS DROPPING]. [AILERON IS PARTIALLY CONTROLLED]. [WE ARE
GOING TO LAND, BUT THIS IS AN EMERGENCY] [4]

ATC: ROYAL AIR 567, BUDAPEST CONTROL. [SPEED AT YOUR DISCRETION]. [RUNWAY TWO
NINE LEFT IS THE LONGEST HERE, WITH THREE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED METERS].
[PLEASE CONFIRM IT IS ADEQUATE].

Now tell me, in your own words, everything that the pilot and the controller said.

When is it necessary to land on longer runways? Explain it.

6 www.cftschool.com +55 11 98700 2434 @cftschool

What does ‘’at pilot’s discretion’’ mean?

Situation 2) Listen to Situation number two:

12 PILOT: TOULOSE CENTER, PR-CHE. [WE ARE ON FLIGHT LEVEL TWO ONE ZERO] [HEADING
GOLF ROMEO VOR], [WE LOST GPS, AND WE CAN’T CONFIRM OUR ESTIMATED TIME TO
REACH OUR NEXT POSITION]. [4]

ATC: PR-CHE, ROGER. [CONFIRM IF YOU ARE ABLE TO RESUME CONVENTIONAL

NAVIGATION]. [FLY RADIAL TWO NINE FIVE TOULOUSE VOR]. [3]

Now tell me, in your own words, everything that the pilot and the controller said.

2.) How bad is it to fly without GPS? Is it reliable? Explain it.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Situation 3) Listen to Situation number three:

13 PILOT: [PAN PAN, PAN PAN, PAN PAN]. [IBIZA APPROACH, SPANISH 091], [WE HAVE NO
INDICATION OF SPEED, HEADING OR ALTITUDE]. [WE NEED TO HOLD HERE TO RUN SOP].

ATC: SPANISH 091, ROGER. [HERE ON MY SCREEN YOU’RE FLYING AT 230 KNOTS, HEADING
SOUTH LEVELLED AT ONE FIVE ZERO]. [YOU ARE CLEARED TO ENTER A HOLD PATTERN]. [3]

Now tell me, in your own words, everything that the pilot and the controller said.

Wait for interaction

3.) What are the basic pieces of information pilots need to fly?

______________________________________________________________________________________

Now, considering the three situations you heard in part 3:

- How would you compare them? You may want to compare them in terms of severity, possible
solutions and ways of prevention. Which one do you think is the most difficult to deal with?
Why?

Thank you. That is the end of Part Three. Let’s move on to the last part of the test, part four.

www.cftschool.com +55 11 98700 2434 @cftschool

PART 4 – PICTURE DESCRIPTION AND DISCUSSION

In this part, you will tell me what you can see in this picture (show the picture to the test taker) and
what you think is happening in it. After that, I will ask you some questions. (Pause) Look at the picture
carefully. You may take a few moments to think before you start talking.

Are instructions clear?

Wait for interaction

1 Please describe this picture to me. If necessary: -What do you think was happening when this picture
was taken? / What’s happening?
2 Choose one:
What do you think happened before this picture was taken?; or
What do you think these people were doing before this picture was taken?
What do you think was happening before this picture was taken?
Can you create a short story based on this picture? Use your imagination.

3 Imagine that this picture has just been taken:
What do you see?

8 www.cftschool.com +55 11 98700 2434 @cftschool

1) What is the impact of huge airplanes like A380 and B787 on the environment?

2) How should airport infrastructure be adequate to allow big airplanes operation?

6) “Aviation industry is investing to develop new technologies and it may result in greater production of
giant wide body airplanes. And, as a consequence, the number of small commercial airplanes will
decrease.”

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Ok, thank you! So this is the end of the test. Thank you very much for coming.
