โดยปกติแล ้ว คำกริยาในภาษาอังกฤษมีเราจะเข ้าใจว่า คือ คำทีแ ่ สดงรู ้แสดงการกระทำ action
่ walk (การกระทำ = เดิน), eat (การกระทำ = กิน) แต่ทงั ้ นี้ ยังมีคำกริยาทีไ่ ม่สามารถ
verbs เชน
มองเห็นหรือแสดงออกทางการกระทำได ้ นั่นก็คอ ื stative verbs ซงึ่ รายละเอียดทัง้ สองประเภทมี
ดังนี้
1. Action verb
action verb หรือ บางคนเค ้าก็เรียกว่า dynamic verb คือคำกริยาทีแ ่ สดงอาการ การกระ
ทำ มีการขยับเขยือ ้ น เคลือ
่ นไหว พูดง่ายๆคือ เรานึกภาพออกว่าเขาทำกริยานั น ้ ๆอย่างไร เชน ่
ถ ้าบอกว่า I eat rice (ฉั นกินข ้าว) เราก็นกึ ภาพออกว่าเรากำลังตักข ้าวเข ้าปาก และทีม ่ าของ อีก
ชอ ื่ หนึง่ ว่า dynamic verb เพราะคำว่า dynamic มันแปลว่า เคลือ ่ นไหว และ กริยากลุม ่ นีม้ จ
ี ำนวน
มาก สว่ นใหญ่ก็เป็ นกริยาทีเ่ ราเคยเรียนมากัน เชน ่ eat, drink, speak, write, catch, go, walk,
watch, sit, hit, sleep, hold, etc.
2. Stative verb
หรือบางครัง้ เรียกว่า state verb หรือ abstract verb คือคำกริยาทีไ่ ม่ได ้แสดงการกระทำ
หรือการเคลือ ่ นไหว แต่เป็ นกริยาทีแ ่ สดงสภาวะ โดยคำกริยาทีจ ่ ัดอยูใ่ นกลุม
่ นี้ สามารถแบ่งออก
เป็ น 5 ประเภทดังนี้

ลองพิจารณาตัวอย่าง 2 ประโยค ดังต่อไปนี้

(1) √ He thinks English is very important for most Thai students.
(2) X He is thinking English is very important for most Thai students.
ประโยค (1) ถูกต ้อง สว่ นประโยค (2) ผิด เพราะเราไม่สามารถใช ้ stative verbs ในรูปกำลัง
กระทำได ้ (present continuous) สว่ นใหญ่เราจะใช ้ stative verbs กับในรูปของ present simple

(4) He is thinking about changing his major. think = พิจารณา (consider)
(5) I don’t see the point of going for a walk now. see = เข ้าใจ (understand)
(6) I’m seeing my teacher this afternoon. see = พบ (meet)
(7) They look very sleepy today. look = seem (ดูเหมือนว่า)
(8) They are looking for a new room. look = find (หา)

**สรุป: Stative Verbs ต่างจาก Action Verbs โดยทว่ ั ไปคือ Stative verbs เป็น คำกริยาที่
ไม่ได้แสดงการกระทำหรือการเคลือ ่ นไหว แต่เป็นกริยาทีแ ่ สดงสภาวะ ด ังนน ั้ ในภาษา
อ ังกฤษจึงไม่นำ Stative Verbs มาแต่งเป็นประโยคทีใ่ ช ้ present continuous (เพราะไม่
สามารถมองเห็นว่า “กำล ังกระทำ”อะไรอยู่ นน ่ ั เอง)**
