TUTORIAL 5 (2022)

Question 1

Calculate the view factor, F21 and the net radiation transfer between two black surfaces, a
rectangle 2 m by 1 m (area A1) at 1500 K and a disc 1 m in diameter (area A2) at 750 K, if the
view factor, F12 = 0.25.

Question 2

Water is used to cool a stream of an organic solvent from 70 oC to 60 oC in a heat exchanger.

Water enters the heat exchanger at a temperature of 15 oC and flows through the annulus
counter-current to the flow of the organic solvent. The flow rates of the water and the organic
solvents are 1kg/s and 2m/s respectively. The inside diameter of the pipe through which the
organic solvent flows is 5 cm and the wall thickness is 3.4 mm. A fouling layer with a thickness
of 1 mm has formed on the inside of the inner pipe. Calculate the length of the heat exchanger
required. Given that for turbulent flow:

Question 3

Cooling water is used to cool a tar mixture from 85 ᵒC to 73 ᵒC in a double pipe heat
exchanger. The water enters the exchanger at 18 ᵒC and leaves the exchanger at 39 ᵒC and
flows co-current with the tar mixture. The outside diameter of the inside pipe is 6 cm with a wall
thickness of 2.9 mm. Stagnant dirt films have formed on both sides of the pipe, both with a wall
thickness of 1 mm. If the heat exchanger is 190 m long, calculate the heat flow per hour if the
water is in the centre pipe.
