IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT:

Process of portraying a desired image/attitude to control the impression others form of us.

Techniques of impression management:

1. CONFORMITY:

Act of changing your behavior in order to fit in.

Example

 A teenager dresses in a certain style because he wants to fit in with the rest of the guys in his
social group.
 A student is unsure about the answer to a particular question posed by the teacher. When
another student in the class provides an answer, the confused student concurs with the answer
believing that the other student is smarter and better informed.
2. EXCUSES:

Explanations you give for a negative event in order to avoid judgment or punishment.

Example

 Getting late for class and blaming it on traffic

 Stealing something and blaming it on your friends that they forced you to steal it.
3. ACCLAIM:

It means to proudly and openly acknowledge somebody when they do their work properly or correctly.

Example

 The scientist earned acclaim for his remarkable achievement in the field of DNA research.
 The restaurant won widespread acclaim for its amazing food and yummy desserts.
4. FLATTERY:

Flattery is a technique often used to improve your relationship with someone through compliments. It’s
meant to make you seem agreeable, perceptive, and pleasant.

Example

 An example of flattery is a person who's hoping for a raise telling their boss how great their new
haircut looks.
 Telling your teacher that I really like your teaching style
5. SELF-PROMOTION :

Self-promotion is about highlighting your strengths and drawing attention to your achievements.

Example

 Self-promotion is common in business settings, but it’s frequently seen in personal relationships,
too.
 Social media influencers are widely known for self-promotion.
 Social media, job interviews, and professional networking events are great platforms for
practicing self-promotion.
6. FAVOR :

Giving favor involves doing something nice for people to influence them to accept us or receive
approval for them. It is, therefore, one of the easiest ways of influencing others to like us.

Example

 A person may take on some extra work so that his co-worker can attend their child’s school play.

7. ASSOCIATION :

The Association is mostly concerned with protecting one’s image by managing information regarding
people and things with which one is associated.

Example

 People network at conferences so that they can reach out to more people in the industry later.
 A job applicant says to an interviewer that his boss and he were roommates in collage.
