These days online teaching is not a new concept, but it is in its trial and error phase. Most of
the teachers are teaching online for the first time during this COVID-19 pandemic. They are
facing many challenges. In absence of guidance, resources and solutions, they usually tend
to give up. They assume that online teaching is the worst and boring method of teaching. It
is same with the students, as they also get bored.
Here are some tips and tricks you can use to make your class engaging and interesting. Let
us talk about 4 major challenges of online teaching and their solutions:
If you can’t engage students, they will lose interest in a virtual classroom. And eventually,
you will also lose interest as students don’t show the desired interaction. Your purpose will
not be achieved.
Solution: To keep students engaged, do the same as you do in your real physical classroom.
Keep cross-questioning with them while teaching. Whatever subject you are teaching,
engage them in responding by calling their names specifically. Students will keep
themselves focussed as they know you can ask them anything.
Many teachers neglect giving tests to their students as they are not sure how to conduct
them.
Solution: To conduct online exams, you can take help of software and apps. Several good
ones are available there, which make it easy to conduct online exams. If you don’t want to
buy the same, you can share question paper in PDF format. Ask them to attempt on paper
and invite them to email scanned copies of their answer sheets to you so that you can check
and grade their responses.
Often most of the students don’t keep their cameras on even after repeated instructions. In
such a case, the teacher would seem to be dictating on a blank screen. If a student’s face is
visible, you know whether he or she is paying attention or not; but when their video is off,
students get involved in unnecessary activities and you feel like teaching a wall.
Solution: Instruct them repeatedly to keep their video on. Make them understand the
situation you face when they don’t keep the video on. If still, they don’t obey, talk to their
parents. Tell them to monitor and convince their children to keep their video on during the
online class. Sometimes students are unruly and they join in with a fake ID so that teachers
won’t be able to identify them. Thus it becomes difficult to talk to a particular student by
calling their name. You can’t address a student specifically when a fake name appears. So
always insist on them to write proper name on their real ID and have a real profile picture.
Challenge 4: Teaching the topic or subject which you need to teach in writing or need
to take written feedback from students
Teachers often encounter this problem when it comes to teaching subjects like mathematics
and other subjects. You can explain these subjects by using a marker and whiteboard, but
when you ask a student to show his or her attempt so that you can check progress or
correct their mistakes then that becomes really difficult. The question is if a student writes
on a paper, will it be shown on screen?
Solution: The right solution is a Pen Tab. Ask students to have a pen tab if they can afford
it. Whatever you write on pen tab is visible on the screen. The teacher can see on screen
anything attempted by the student immediately and can highlight the errors and
corrections at the same time. Pen Tab is useful for teachers also while teaching junior
classes. You can teach them by drawing or writing.
These are a few simple tips and tricks that can resolve major challenges of online teaching.
You can adopt these in your online classroom. One more thing to keep in mind is during
online classes not only students are sitting in front of you but their parents are also
watching you from behind the screen. When they suddenly appear on the screen, some
teachers hesitate. There is no way to avoid hesitation. The only thing to avoid is to use foul
words. Teachers need to have good command over their subject.
Opinion: Traditional Face-to-face Classroom Learning
Promotes Better Learning Environment
Nowadays, online class have become extremely popular in our educational system
because of Covid-19 pandemic that struck in the Philippines. Because of this many
problems arises during tis pandemic. One of the solution is online class modality of
which is the better way to continue the class while face-to-face classes are not allowed
to avoid spread of Covid-19 virus.
In my own opinion, face-to-face learning is better than online learning because of
the interactions made during discussions and there are examples that will benefit the
learner more during face to face learning. Student’s questions will get an immediate
answers. Furthermore, during online learning, students have to wait for a response from
the teacher. As I believed that immediate and efficient feedback response is important
for effective learning. In classroom environment, students have the advantage of
working on small groups where they can discuss on difficult topics together. Sometimes
discussing in person is more easier than typing it out or trying to explain it online.
Face to face learning can allows students to focus better in class during learning.
This is because students can ask questions directly without any hindrance while the
teacher is teaching inside the classroom. The teacher also can evaluate easily of the
work of the students, find the cause of the mistakes done, corrects the mistakes made
and assess directly the students ability. Therefore, this shows the importance of
students to learn face to face. In fact, the students understanding performance will be
going well with this way of learning.
In conclusion, face-to-face learning in the classroom give both teacher and
student better environment because of direct learning that we offer to our students.
Students can ask directly their concerns and problem about the specific topic being
discussed. Because of that I still strongly believed that traditional face-to-face learning
promotes better learning environment.
Advantages of face to face learning
Face to face learning can allows students to focus better in class during
learning. This is because students can ask directly without any hindrance
while the teacher is teaching in the classroom. The teacher is able to evaluate
the students work easily, find the cause of the work mistakes done, corrects
the mistakes made and assess the students ability. Therefore, this showsthe
Important of students to learn face to face to teachers and students. In facts,
the students understanding will be well.
However, online learning has their own advantage too. It can improvesself-
discipline skills among students. Students are usually used to having set times
and academic schedules in traditional face-to-face learning environments as
they can be more easily distracted when left to their own devices. In the real
world, students will normally be required to manage their time effecientlyand
be self-motivated to complete tasks and project.
