1.0. INTRODUCTION: The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established by the
federal government of Nigeria.

The industrial attachment was introduced into various higher institutions in Nigeria and it gives students
the chance to choose any field relevant to his/her course of studies at companies, government
organization and others.

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is acceptable skill training program which forms
part of the minimum academic standards in the various degree program of Nigerian universities. It is an
effort to bridge the existing between theory, practical of science and technology and other professional
program in Nigerian institution.

1.1. BRIEF HISTORY OF KEDCO

Electricity Distribution Company are offering efficient and sustainable energy to the people within the
business territory of the company made up of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states. The companies are: the
Sahelian Energy and Integrated Services Ltd (SEIS); the Kayseri ve Civari Electric T.A.S (KCETAS) Turkey,
and the Dantata Investment and Securities Company Ltd. Others are, INCAR Power Ltd and the Highland

investor in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company Plc, after a very rigorous and transparent process
which gained world acclamation.

KEDCO is one of the eleven Distribution Companies privatized by the Federal Government of Nigeria as
part of the electricity power sector reform program implementation. Located in the north western
geopolitical zone of Nigeria, the Company has license to generate, distribute and market electricity in
the three states of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina. Geographical coverage of the company is 67,128 Km2. The
company has the largest potential in terms of customer population with the combined population of the
three states at 19,564,000.00 (2006 national census). KEDCO Plc became a Public Liability company on
November 7th 2005, after the implementation of the Electricity Sector Reform Act of 2005 had started

There are many fields in Kano electricity distribution company (KEDCO) are classified into different unit
listed below:

1.2.1.ELECTRICAL FITTING SECTION: this unit are part of field that are control and that are responsible
for providing protection in transformer such as:

a)Transformer earthen: which serves as protection against any leakage of flowing of current. It is made
up of copper of about 30m.

b)Transformer oil: is an insulator which serves as the dielectric insulator strength e.t.c

1.2.3 PC & M (PROTECTION,CONTROL and METERING) SECTION: this unit are part of the field that
handle all the types of test performed in transformer to trace any faulty which may cause problem.

electricity that the customer consumed) and setting of un-use meter for repairmen e.t.c

1.4. SAFETY FACTORS

Safety is an important consideration at any field, but I was made to understand that on a site with any
harzardous and accidentally, extra safety is of crucial importance and should be everyone's primary
concern because of electricity that can be a dangerous activity. Safety is based on knowledge, skill, and
an attitude of care and concern .Thus safety factors includes all the measures carried out to protect both
the worker, consultants, contractors and all persons present on the site at every given time from
fatalities and injuries, and as well as minimize or eliminate all possible electricity hazards. This safety
measures can also be applied to the safety of the electricity and electrical instrument from damage of
any kind.

Safety precaution guide lines for workers and persons present on a working field:

1. Proper clothing is as essential to safety. Wear clothes that are smart and appropriate for the site
work and weather conditions. Loose clothing is dangerous for workers around power tools and
equipment.

2. Footwear must be safety boots or work boots that are thick-soled shoes in order to protect the feet
from falling objects or from penetration by flowing of any current or any leakage, and should have non-
slip soles. Sandals or other types of inappropriate footwear are hazardous in the field.

3. Protective head gear (helmets or hard hats) must always be worn on a construction site by all persons
for protection of the head from falling objects of any kind.

4. Suspension belts are of crucial importance for site workers working at very high

5. Be always aware and alert of your surroundings.

6. A clean work place is a safe work place. This refers to the neatness and good order of the
construction site. They interfere with work and can constitute a hazard to both the worker and other
persons on the site.

7. Any unsafe conditions or practices that is observed should IMMEDIATELY be reported to the site
project manager.
8. Emergency medical care in form of first aid assistance (first aid kit) must be provided on the site and
must be easily identifiable and nearby.
