It’s our pleasure to release a Q3 edition of 2021 IEEE Malaysia


Section newsletter. This edition covers activities which have been
conducted between the month of July to September 2021. This
issue presents activities conducted by IEEE Subsections, chapters,
affinity groups, student activities committee & student branches. I
would like to thank all who contributed the reporting articles to this
edition and a big round of applause to all volunteers for your effort
in organizing various activities despite MCO. I hope that you find
this newsletter informative and useful. Looking forward to your

As a result of this program, all participants have a clear understanding
and are able to learn the PCB manufacturing technology and industry

First Place for Best Booth at the Sparklers Summit 2021


Sparklers Summit 2021 is organized by IEEE Region 10 Young
Professionals and it was on 7,8 & 14 th August 2021. At this event,
we had our first experience handling virtual booth via Airmeet. 1
We had fun decorating it and engaging with the booth visitors at
the lounge and at our discussion table. Thanks to the team in-
charged, Dr. Haroon Rashid, Aznilinda Zainuddin, Hisham Neyaz,
Zohrul Islam and Dr. Osman Ayop. We won First Place on Best
Booth Award. We have lots of visitors including from other YP o f
region 10 . Here, we also linked with other YP to enhance the

Rehabilitation Group of IIUM have successfully conducted a webinar
entitled “Research and Innovation for Industrial Applications,
Women Empowerment & Sustainable Development Goals”. The
speaker for this webinar was Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, an exceptionally
active IEEE volunteer, from the Bangladesh University of Engineering
Malaysian Women - Industry Revolution (IR 4.0) and Technology. This event was attended by university students,
Workshop on Eluding Cyber Crime (SIBERNITA) academicians and industry professionals from various institutions
and industries. This webinar showcased various research outputs

GARAGE INVENTORS - GRASSROOT INVENTIONS WEBINAR

The webinar was conducted on 11.00am 11th Sept 2021 using Zoom platform by Mr. Robest Yong , a name so synonymously linked to
creativity and innovations rose from a humble ‘Garage Inventor’ to be appointed the Innovation Ambassador by Agency Innovation
Malaysia (AIM) in 2010. A believer and practitioner of his own metaphor “Thinking Without the Box”. Robest had been involved in
numerous innovation activities and chalked up multiple national and international awards of different fields and technologies since the
early 1990s.

About 35 participants attended the talk which was also Live Streamed in Facebook. The talk has also been uploaded in YouTube too.
The Talk was an eye-opener to many. He touched on simplicity in identifying the need to invent. The outcome is not WHY but WHAT
have to be invented to invent and be a Successful Inventor.

Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (ICPADM)
held on 12 July 2021, a DEIS membership drive activity was
carried out to promote the DEIS membership to the
colloquiumattendees and to bring awareness to them on the
presence of the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter.

The IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter was established in Malaysia


in May 2015 with the aim to enhance networking and
stimulate research and development in the field of dielectrics
and electrical insulation in Malaysia. Its field of interest is in
line with that of DEIS, i.e., the study and application of
dielectric phenomena and behavior and the development,
characterization, and application of all gaseous, liquid and
solid electrical insulating materials and systems utilized in
electrical and electronic equipment.

The 2nd IEEE International Conference on Sensors and Nanotechnology (SENSORS AND NANO 2021) has been
successfully held virtually from 22nd – 23rd September 2021. The event was officiated by YB Datuk Haji Ahmad
Amzad b. Hashim, the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Around 40 technical
papers were presented during this conference by the participants which covers various topics in the field of
sensors and nanotechnology, varying from materials, devices to emerging sensors and learning applications. In
addition to the oral presentation of the technical papers, this conference was also joined by 5 keynote speakers
and 6 invited speakers, which include the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer from the Sensors Council. The Conference
Chair cum the Chapter Chair, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Zainal Arif Burhanudin would like to thank those involved in

IEEE MyIPS – PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES


On 29th July 2021, IEEE Photonics Society organized a Public Lecture Series (PLS) titled “Zirconia-Erbium-doped
Fibre towards Dark Pulse Laser Generation”. The speaker was Dr Arni Munira Markom, from Universiti
Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The speaker shared on her success in generating strong dark pulses with high
stability using a zirconia-erbium-doped fiber in a simple ring configuration. The second PLS was organized on
20th August 2021 where the speaker was Dr Fatin Hamimi Mustafa, a senior lecturer at Institute for Research
in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia . The title of her lecture was “A Low-cost Near-
Infrared Device to Monitor Nutritional Status of Newborn Infants“. During the talk, she shared her experience
in developing a NIR device to monitor nutritional status of newborn infants. The third PLS was organized on 25
September 2021 where the speaker was Ts. Dr. Nur Hidayah Azeman. The title for the session was
“Polysaccharides as the Sensing Material in Optical Sensor Applications”. The speaker highlighted on critical
aspects in designing suitable polysaccharides for recognizing specific analytes through physical and chemical
modifications. All sessions were held virtually via Google Meet.

IEEE ICSIPA is the flagship conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Malaysia Chapter and was held
from 13 – 15 September 2021. Keynotes were given by renowned speakers, Prof. Dong Xu (Uni. Sydney),
Prof. Jing-Ming Guo (National Taiwan Uni.), Prof. Celia Shahnazand (IEEE SPS WISP), Prof Leonardo
Tomazeli (Uni. Campinas, Brazil), Dr. Mark Chia (Mobius Group), Ir. Dr. Nordin Ramli (MI MOS Berhad) and
Mr. Tan Pei Seng (ViTrox Corp Berhad). This is the first time the event is conducted online. 46 papers were
presented, with 37% international researchers.
IEEE ICSIPA 2021 managed to organize the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) presentation competition. At the conference, the first IEEE Signal and
Image Processing Challenge Cup (SIPC-Malaysia) was also organized with the aims to create awareness on the use of signal processing
in identifying common road accidents and promote a safer environment for road commuters.
