MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

It’s our pleasure to release a Q3 edition of 2021 IEEE Malaysia

Section newsletter. This edition covers activities which have been
conducted between the month of July to September 2021. This
issue presents activities conducted by IEEE Subsections, chapters,
affinity groups, student activities committee & student branches. I
would like to thank all who contributed the reporting articles to this
edition and a big round of applause to all volunteers for your effort
in organizing various activities despite MCO. I hope that you find
this newsletter informative and useful. Looking forward to your
continued support in the newsletter activities. If you have any

IEEE Malaysia Section
Student Leadership Camp 2021
IEEE Malaysia Section Student Leadership Camp 2021 is the
flagship event of the IEEE Malaysia Section under the Student
Activities Committee (SAC). This event is organized annually and
all SBs, SBCs, students AGs are invited to attend. A total of 30
SBs, 17 SBCs, and 5 AGs were invited to the event, which was
held on the 21 st August 2021. All officers and counselors are also
invited.
In this leadership camp several topics are presented as follows:
• IEEE Malaysia Section and Volunteering within
• Introduction to IEEE Malaysia Section SBs, SBCs, and AGs
• Awareness of IEEE Membership Benefits
• Awards and Fund Opportunities
• Volunteers Tools (vTools)
• Membership Development - Best Practices
• Student Branch Best Practices – Example
104 IEEE Student/GSM members have attended this half-day
leadership camp. During the event, the Section Chair, SAC Chair,
SSR, and SAC Team have given talks in the various aspect related
to student branches development, membership recruitment,
opportunities, etc. Total of 4 activities proposed by the 4
matchings of active and inactive SBs. The interest shown by all
the participants and the student branches that submitted the
matching program is impressive. The students of different SBs
had the chance to collaborate and present their collaboration
ideas to the attendees. The event was ended with a fun quiz and
prizes for the winners and lunch coupons for all attendees.

IEEE Malaysia Section
Final Year Project Competition 2021
The IEEE Malaysia Section Final Year Project Competition 2021 is
also a flagship activity organized by the Student Activities
Committee of the IEEE Malaysia Section. The first Call for Poster
and a One-page Abstract of the final year project conducted in
year 2021 was made on the 3rd August 2021. The deadline for
submission is 30th September 2021.
This year competition has seen great support from the IEEE
technical chapters and affinity groups in Malaysia. A total of 22
tracks (sponsored by various technical chapters and affinity
groups) is opened for project submission (The highest number
of tracks and sponsors recorded!). The competition is opened
for all undergraduate students (IEEE Member and Non-Member)
who have just completed or are currently doing their Final Year
Project (FYP ) in the year 2021. Individual projects and group
projects are accepted. The submitted FYP must be the student’s
own project work and NOT the work of others. Participants are
advised to submit to 1 track, but they are allowed to submit to a
maximum of Two Tracks only.
Positive responses were given by the students in participating to
this competition. We received a total of 592 submissions to the
competition, which is also the highest submissions for record.
This shows a remarkable support by the students to the activity
organized by the SAC of IEEE Malaysia Section.

Webinar on MAGDAS System in Malaysia and Its
Data Application in Space Science Research
Institute of Climate Change (IPI) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
in collaboration with IEEE Young Professionals Malaysia (IEEE YP)
hosted the IPI Seminar Series entitled MAGD AS System in
Malaysia and Its Data Application in Space Science Research. This
seminar held on 15 th July, is one of the initiative to introduce the
Magnetic Data Acquisition System (MAGDAS) in Malaysia. The
MAGD AS system is a joint research project by the Malaysian
Space Agency (MYSA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM),
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin
(UniSZA) dan Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The first
speaker is Puan Zahira Binti Mohd Radzi, the Director of
Exploration & Space Science Division in Malaysian Space Agency
(MYSA), and her division is responsible for planning & develop
space science sector in Malaysia including astronomy. The second
speaker is Dr. Nurul Shazana Abdul Hamid, an Associate Research
Fellow at Institute of Climate Change, UKM. 45 participants joined
the session and actively engaged by asking questions related to
Space Weather. studies.
Webinar on Natural Disaster Research using Ground
and Space-borne Data.
The Institute of Environmental Research East Coast, in
collaboration with IEEE Young Professionals Malaysia (IEEE YP),
has organised an online seminar series via Cisco WebEx Meetings
on Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This talk
featured two speakers: Associate Prof Ts Dr Roslan Umar from
ESERI, and Head of Astronomy Unit at UNISZA Observatory and
Dr. Siti Harwani Md Yusoff, a senior lecturer at Universiti Sains
Malaysia's School of Aerospace Engineering. They delivered a
presentation on natural disaster research using ground and
space-borne data. This seminar series was attended and
benefited by both IEEE and non-I EEE members of 45 participants.
Participants are exposed to the study and understanding on the
research in earth magnetism and changes in solar activity and its
relationship to the occurrence of earthquakes.

Industrial Talk : Eleven Years Industrial Experience and Role as a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Engineer
Industrial and Academic Networking Unit from School of Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering, UiTM Johor, Pasir Gudang
together with the IEEE YP Malaysia has organized an Industry Talk with a topic Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Engineer. The invited
speakers was Pn. Siti Fatimah Kamsani, Senior Engineer on 11 years experience focusing in PCB at Dyson Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. who
shared her experiences after graduation to now. Dyson Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. is a leading company from the United Kingdom
known for its use of British technology. Their products are home electrical appliances such as vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, lamps,
heaters, bladed fans, and air filters.
As a result of this program, all participants have a clear understanding
and are able to learn the PCB manufacturing technology and industry
experience of from an Engineer of an electronics background. In
addition, this talk has cultivate an interest to the participants in
Electrical Engineering field and understand on product design and
simulation section. Various knowledge, experiences and challenges
faced were shared. A total of 59 participants view the webinar via
YouTube livestreamed.

First Place for Best Booth at the Sparklers Summit 2021

Sparklers Summit 2021 is organized by IEEE Region 10 Young
Professionals and it was on 7,8 & 14 th August 2021. At this event,
we had our first experience handling virtual booth via Airmeet. 1
We had fun decorating it and engaging with the booth visitors at
the lounge and at our discussion table. Thanks to the team in-
charged, Dr. Haroon Rashid, Aznilinda Zainuddin, Hisham Neyaz,
Zohrul Islam and Dr. Osman Ayop. We won First Place on Best
Booth Award. We have lots of visitors including from other YP o f
region 10 . Here, we also linked with other YP to enhance the
relationship between
YPs. It is a chance to
discuss for any potential
of collaborative events
in future.

Webinar on 5G Wireless Communication : Vision, Use Cases,
Requirements, and Future Directions
This symposium shares the details on 5G technology and its future
direction. The event also a platform for local and international
participants to communicate and share ideas through the Q&A
session during the symposium. As a result of this program, all
participants have a clear understanding on 5G Technology. The
invited speaker is Dr. Najam ul Hasan is a working as an Assistant
Professor in Dept. of Electrical and Computer engineering at
Dhofar University, Salalah, Oman from Sep 2015. Prior to this, he
was EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellow in Robert Gordon University,
Aberdeen, UK and BK 21+ Postdoctoral Fellow in Yonsei
University, Seoul, South Korea. Currently, he is working as
Associate Editor for a number of journals including Annals of
Telecommunication. The webinar has gathered 18 IEEE members
and 97 non-IEEE Members.
Workshop : Research Strategies In Determining The Direction,
Framework and Literature Review
The workshop shares the research strategies in determining the
direction, framework and literature review in research activities.
The workshop shares HRST method and a clear understanding in
writing a good writeup for chapter 1-3 in a research thesis. As a
result of this program, all participants have a clear understanding
on HRTS method and an effective way to do literature review and
define all the content in chapter1 of a thesis writing. The
instructor is Dr Halim Hj Razali, an experienced in technical
curriculum development (WBL), renewable energy, hydrogen
technology and solar energy. He is a recipient of the National
Book Award 2013, through the book Hydrogen Fuel Combustion
Engines In Petroleum and Gas category.

Clubhouse Topic : : Engineering Professionals in Malaysia: Are We Doing Enough?

Our IEEE Young Professionals Malaysia, Chair – Dr. Haroon Rashid was invited to the
Clubhouse Session with the topic : Engineering Professionals in Malaysia: Are We
Doing Enough?, organized by Young Professionals and Fresh Graduates in
Engineering (YouFresh) to discuss on how the organizations are functioning and
helping young engineers in Malaysia. The session took place on Friday, 3rd September
2021 at 09:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Other than Dr,
Haroon, other speakers are Hazwan Hairollah,
Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE KL YP), Tasha
Fazira Husnaini, Institute of Materials Malaysia
(I MM YP), Firdaus Kamal, Matt Energy, Kenneth

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE)

2021 IEEE Malaysia Women in Engineering Congress
The annual IEEE MY WIE Congress took place on the 10th of
September 2021, with a forum entitled “Inspiring and Sustaining
Women in Engineering”. The forum was moderated by Dr. Raja
Jamilah Raja Yusof from Universiti Malaya with 3 other esteemed
panels – Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Hayati Abdullah (Universiti Teknologi
Malaysia & past IEM Southern Branch Chairman), Ms. Fakhirah
Khairuddin (Tesla Inc.), and Ir Ts. Dr. Iryani Mohamed Rawi (former
Quality Assurance Specialist from Tenaga Nasional Berhad). More
than 60 participants, ranging from university students,
academicians, as well as school teachers and students had joined
the congress. There were 3 rounds of sessions for the forum, which
addressed various concerns and efforts to sustain the interest and
motivation of women across all ages in the field. Lucky draw prizes
and token for attendees were also given out post congress. We hope
this annual event will continue to serve as a platform to inspire and
empower women in engineering & collectively use their diverse
talents to innovate for the benefit of humanity.
Malaysian Women - Industry Revolution (IR 4.0)
Workshop on Eluding Cyber Crime (SIBERNITA)
IEEE Women in Engineering Malaysia has collaborated with the
Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development
(KPWKM), Malaysia International Muslim Women Union (IMWU),
Malaysia Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in the “Malaysian
Women - Industry Revolution (IR 4.0) Workshop on Eluding C yber
Crime (SIBERNITA)” workshop. The 2 session event was conducted
on the 8 th July & 29th Sept, 2021 with the objective of providing
awareness to women on cyber crime. Dr. Raja Jamilah represented
IEEE MY WIE as the moderator in the second session.

Writing a Winning Resume Workshop
On 13 th of Au gust 2021, the IEEE Women in Engineering Malaysia
organized a workshop on “Writing a Winning Resume”, which has
been successfully facilitated by Dr Belle Ooi from The University of
Nottingham, Malaysia. The workshop was attended by 3 students
from UNITEN. The workshop started off with reviewing the student’s
resume, and continued with individual coaching on how to produce a
winning resume. It is hopeful that the workshop will be beneficial to
the attendees. The workshop was very lively and interactive and later
ended with a quick momentous snapshot.
“Research and Innovation for Industrial Applications,
Women Empowerment & Sustainable Development
Goals” Webinar
On 17 th September 2021, the IEEE Women in Engineering Malaysia,
in joint collaboration with HERR - Healthcare Engineering &
Rehabilitation Group of IIUM have successfully conducted a webinar
entitled “Research and Innovation for Industrial Applications,
Women Empowerment & Sustainable Development Goals”. The
speaker for this webinar was Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, an exceptionally
active IEEE volunteer, from the Bangladesh University of Engineering
and Technology. This event was attended by university students,
academicians and industry professionals from various institutions
and industries. This webinar showcased various research outputs
from Prof. Dr. Celia and her team, and how they were utilized for the
benefits of society. This event promoted ‘collaboration beyond
borders’, which is deemed very possible with this current
advancement of technology. Prof. Celia's presentation was followed
with thought-provoking Q&A sessions, and ended with a memorable
photography session.

GARAGE INVENTORS - GRASSROOT INVENTIONS WEBINAR

The webinar was conducted on 11.00am 11th Sept 2021 using Zoom platform by Mr. Robest Yong , a name so synonymously linked to
creativity and innovations rose from a humble ‘Garage Inventor’ to be appointed the Innovation Ambassador by Agency Innovation
Malaysia (AIM) in 2010. A believer and practitioner of his own metaphor “Thinking Without the Box”. Robest had been involved in
numerous innovation activities and chalked up multiple national and international awards of different fields and technologies since the
early 1990s.

About 35 participants attended the talk which was also Live Streamed in Facebook. The talk has also been uploaded in YouTube too.
The Talk was an eye-opener to many. He touched on simplicity in identifying the need to invent. The outcome is not WHY but WHAT
have to be invented to invent and be a Successful Inventor.

He also touched on D.U.M.B.S. Theory : It is - DOable / USEable / MARKETable / BANKable / SUSTAINable

Common Mistakes in Thesis Formatting: Tips & Tricks
July 3rd, 2021 Kuala Lumpur - IEEE Malaysia Kuala Lumpur
Subsection and partner, Green Cities and Construction Research
Group, a research group from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur had successfully organized a talk cum hands-on
workshop on Common Mistakes in Thesis Formatting: Tips &
Tricks. It was conducted by Ts. Khairul Zahreen Mohd Arof who
is also the student Representative Coordinator of IEEE Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur Subsection. This 2-hour workshop taught the
participants on using, editing as well as developing a thesis
format using Microsoft Words. A total of 5 IEEE members and
20 non-IEEE members participated in the workshop. The limited
seats for the workshop were very conducive for both speaker
and participants to interact ideally.
STEM Education for Prosperity – by Achieving SDGs
On 22 nd July 2021, Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics
(RFTI) in collaboration with IEEE Malaysia Kuala Lumpur
Subsection, had successfully organized a virtual STEM forum
with the topic of “STEM Education for Prosperity – by Achieving
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. There were 57
participants, in which IEEE member were 27. Majority were
UTM academics, students, teachers, parents, and industrial
STEM partners. Guest speakers highlighted the importance of
STEM education to develop their critical and higher level of
thinking skills based on the fundamental problems by bridging
what they have learned in their syllabus, class, assignments,
and projects with their daily lives to bring prosperity to people,
planet and environmental sustainability. Both directly and
indirectly many SDGs can be achieved – namely, Goal No. 4 –
QualityEducation for humanity.

Master Python in 2 Days! Workshop
IEEE Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Subsection organized a 2-day
online Python workshop on 30th July and 1 st August. The
workshop was conducted by Dr. Maryam Khanian
Najafabadi, from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. The
course was designed to allow the participants to learn the
Python programming language in a practical manner, online.
They were introduced to the basic features of Python and
the participants showed great interest in coding and
enhancing their programming skill. The trainer and
participants were able to interact actively online to master
the language in 2 days. 27 IEEE and 10 Non-IEEE participants
attended this workshop. The outcome of this workshop was
a promise to organize a 2-day workshop on Machine
Learning using Python programming language.
Mastering Machine Learning using Python
On 4 th and 5 th September 2021, IEEE Malaysia Kuala Lumpur
Subsection has successfully organized a two-day workshop
on ‘Mastering Machine Learning using Python’’. This
workshop was attended by 18 IEEE members and 19 non-
IEEE members. Dr. Maryam Khanian Najafabadi, an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Internet Engineering and
Computer Science, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman was the
trainer for this workshop. This workshop presented the
fundamental concepts and algorithms of machine learning
in detail since data analysis techniques are becoming a
necessity in commerce and a variety of scientific disciplines.
The workshop was heldvirtually via Webex Ciscomeeting.

Industry Talk: Proactive Power Quality
The IEEE Sarawak Subsection hosted an Industry Talk
on the 18 August 2021 online. The talk titled “Proactive
Power Quality” was delivered by Dr. William (Bill)
Howe, Program Manager at Electric Power Research
Institute (EPRI). Bill Howe has managed the Power
Quality research portfolio (Program P1 – PQ) at EPRI for
over 20 years and he share his thoughts on a proactive

The Special Call for Proposals Focused on Addressing
Local Needs During COVID Time is an innovative
initiative of IEEE Region 10 and the IEEE Humanitarian
Activities Committee. This fund supports the projects
that utilize innovative technology to address the
COVID-19 situations while keeping safety the highest
priority. The team proposed a solution to address social
distancing in the local visually impaired community that
the COVID-19 pandemic has caused.
This work collaborates with Swinburne Sarawak, whose
2025 vision is people and technology working together
to build a better world. IEEE’s core purpose is to foster
technological innovation and excellence for the benefit
of humanity.
IEEE R10 HTA Outstanding Volunteer Award
One of the IEEE Sarawak Senior Member, Dr. Lau Bee
Theng, an academic member of Faculty of Engineering,
Computing and Science, Swinburne University of
Technology Sarawak Campus, won the prestigious IEEE
Region 10 Outstanding Humanitarian Technology
Activity (HTA) Volunteer. Bee Theng has been actively
involved in social inclusion and advancing community
through technology activities.
IEEE Sarawak Subsection is very proud of this
achievement as this is the first time a member of a
subsection in IEEE Region 10 won the outstanding
volunteer award.

3rd IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Engineering and Technology (IICAIET2021)
The 3rd IEEE International Conference on Artificial
Intelligence in Engineering and Technology
(IICAIET2021) has been successfully held virtually
from 13th to 15th September 2021. The conference
is organised and technically sponsored by the IEEE
Sabah Subsection. It is co-organised by the Artificial
Intelligence Research Unit (AiRU) of Universiti
Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the Faculty of Robotics and
Design, Osaka Institute of Technology. The main goal
of the conference is to provide a platform for
knowledge exchange and networking between

Intelligence (AI) in any science and engineering
related field. A total of 94 papers were received. Each
paper was blind-reviewed by at least two reviewers.
Based on the reviewers’ comments, a total of 69
papers were accepted (73.4% acceptance rate). 61
papers were presented at the conference by
presenters from Malaysia, India, USA, Japan,
Philippines, Bangladesh, etc. The presented papers
will be submitted to IEEE Xplore for publication, as has
been done for IICAIET 2018 and IICAIET 2020 which
have been published in IEEE Xplore and Scopus-
indexed.

International Conference on the Properties and
Applications of Dielectric Materials
The 13th International Conference on the Properties and
Applications of Dielectric Materials (ICPADM) was
successfully held on 12-14 July 2021. The 13th ICPADM 2021
was a virtual conference hosted by Universiti Teknologi
Malaysia via the Institute of High Voltage and High Current
and sponsored by the IEEE DEIS and TNB Labs Malaysia. The
theme of the conference was “Emerging Dielectrics for
Energy Sustainability”.
A total of 149 participants from 21 countries joined the
conference, with 117 papers presented over 18 oral sessions
based on 6 main tracks, namely, condition monitoring,
dielectric phenomena, electrical insulation, general
dielectrics, nanomaterials, and others. A virtual tour was
also carried out through 5 video presentations prepared by
TNB Labs Malaysia, TNB Research Malaysia, and Universiti
Teknologi Malaysia.

Webinar: TNB Labs Webinar, Operation and Life
Management of Power Transformer
The IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS)
Malaysia Chapter collaborated with TNBR Labs to organize a
Webinar entitled “Operation and Life Management of Power
Transformer”. The talk was held online via Cisco WebEx and
was attended by around315 participants.
In this talk, Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Aizam Talik (Head of Advanced
Diagnostic Services TNBR) started with a quick introduction
of transformer asset maintenance. Next, he explained about
the importance of condition based maintenance followed by
transformer maintenance strategies and transformer life
management. Dr Aizam also shared several case studies
related to how condition based maintenance was used to
prevent transformer failure.

It is hoped that the experience and knowledge shared during

the webinar are beneficialto all participants.

Membership Drive Activity during ICPADM

In conjunction with the 13th International Conference on the
Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (ICPADM)
held on 12 July 2021, a DEIS membership drive activity was
carried out to promote the DEIS membership to the
colloquiumattendees and to bring awareness to them on the
presence of the IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter.

The IEEE DEIS Malaysia Chapter was established in Malaysia

in May 2015 with the aim to enhance networking and
stimulate research and development in the field of dielectrics
and electrical insulation in Malaysia. Its field of interest is in
line with that of DEIS, i.e., the study and application of
dielectric phenomena and behavior and the development,
characterization, and application of all gaseous, liquid and
solid electrical insulating materials and systems utilized in
electrical and electronic equipment.

The 2nd IEEE International Conference on Sensors and Nanotechnology (SENSORS AND NANO 2021) has been
successfully held virtually from 22nd – 23rd September 2021. The event was officiated by YB Datuk Haji Ahmad
Amzad b. Hashim, the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Around 40 technical
papers were presented during this conference by the participants which covers various topics in the field of
sensors and nanotechnology, varying from materials, devices to emerging sensors and learning applications. In
addition to the oral presentation of the technical papers, this conference was also joined by 5 keynote speakers
and 6 invited speakers, which include the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer from the Sensors Council. The Conference
Chair cum the Chapter Chair, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Zainal Arif Burhanudin would like to thank those involved in

IEEE MyIPS – CHARITY PROGRAM IEEE MyIPS – DISTINGUISHED LECTURE

From 1st August until 25th September 2021, IEEE
Photonics Society in collaboration with Pusat
Kepimpinan Wanita Tun Fatimah Hashim, Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia, Kelab Amal Flat Taman Kosas and
IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement organised the
Kongsi Rezeki Covid19 Charity Program for the low-
income families affected by Covid19. This charity
program covers eight different locations which are
Ampang, Kosas, Keramat, Bandar Baru Ampang, Bagan
Lalang, Sri Nilai, Pandan Indah and Jelatek . The families
were given monetary donations and household
supplies to help ease their burden during this
pandemic. Around 240 families received the donations
from this program.
PROGRAM
On 6th September 2021, IEEE Photonics Society
organized a Distinguished Lecture Series entitled
“Computational Nanophotonics: Basic, Challenges
and Future Perspectives”. The speaker was
Professor Dr. Salah Obayya from Zewail City of
Science and Technology, Egypt. The lecture was held
virtually via Google Meet. The talk introduced an
overview of existing computational modeling tools
for analyzing photonic devices while highlighting
their salient features and shortcomings.

IEEE MyIPS – PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES

On 29th July 2021, IEEE Photonics Society organized a Public Lecture Series (PLS) titled “Zirconia-Erbium-doped
Fibre towards Dark Pulse Laser Generation”. The speaker was Dr Arni Munira Markom, from Universiti
Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The speaker shared on her success in generating strong dark pulses with high
stability using a zirconia-erbium-doped fiber in a simple ring configuration. The second PLS was organized on
20th August 2021 where the speaker was Dr Fatin Hamimi Mustafa, a senior lecturer at Institute for Research
in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia . The title of her lecture was “A Low-cost Near-
Infrared Device to Monitor Nutritional Status of Newborn Infants“. During the talk, she shared her experience
in developing a NIR device to monitor nutritional status of newborn infants. The third PLS was organized on 25
September 2021 where the speaker was Ts. Dr. Nur Hidayah Azeman. The title for the session was
“Polysaccharides as the Sensing Material in Optical Sensor Applications”. The speaker highlighted on critical
aspects in designing suitable polysaccharides for recognizing specific analytes through physical and chemical
modifications. All sessions were held virtually via Google Meet.

Second life EV Batteries – green energy
storage system

After few years, the batteries used in EV degrade 70 to 80%
and are eventually replaced. Reusing discarded batteries for
further applications is called second life EV batteries. This talk

TCAD applications in various technology’ and Mr. Muhd Amri Ismail
whose topic was ‘SPICE device modelling for research a nd
manufacturing’. The program attracte d worldwide audiences due to
Silvaco Inc. participation in the program. The forum was m odera ted by
Dr. Nurul Ezaila Alias from UTM. The program had managed to attract
more than 100 audience and had received positive feedback from a ll

The Microbit kits that were delivered to the students for free.
Fun With STEM (Let’s Code With Microbit) is an educational and
community service event organized by IEEE EDS Malaysia in
collaboration with Perintis Youth IIUM Chapte r. The program is also

FYP Industry Award 2021

collaborated with IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter to organize a
Final Year Project (FYP) Industry Award 2021. This
competition was opened to the first 70 final years bachelor
degree students. This programme started with the
submission of video and documentation of the participation
by students on July 22−23 July 2021. The assessment
process by the Industry Panel was on 24−27 July 2021 and
the announcement of competition results was on 29 July
2021.

The 1 st Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology
(MJIIT) − Tokyo City University (TCU) Student Symposium
2021 was successfully held on 4 August 2021. This
symposium was a virtual conference organized by MJIIT and
TCU, with objective to increase future collaboration between
MJIIT−TCU on conducting the research and to foster better
relationships among MJIIT−TCU. In this event, 12 presenters

The Senior Design Project 2021 Webinar Series entitled
“Reference Management using Mendeley” was held on 20
August 2021. IEEE OES Malaysia Chapter collaborated with
Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology,
UMP to organize this webinar. This talk was held online via
Microsoft Team and was attended by around 97 participants.
In this talk, Mdm. Affida Abu Bakar (Senior Librarian, UMP
Library) started with a quick introduction of reference
management using Mendeley. Next, she explained and did a
tutorial together with the participants on how to collect
references, organize the citation and create bibliographies. It
is hoped that the knowledge shared during the talk is
beneficial to all participants.
Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) Technology: Virtual
Workshop and Forum 2021
Petronas Sdn. Bhd. was successfully hosted “Unmanned
Surface Vehicle (USV) Techonlogy: Virtual Workshop and
Forum 2021” virtually via Microsoft Team on 21 September
2021. This event collaborated with IEEE OES Malaysia
Chapter and supported by Malaysia Hydrographic Society
(MyHS). The workshop and forum was attended by around
600 participants from industries, academician and

The afternoon session was divided into 3 forums; Forum 1:

keynote address from Dr. Chua Wen-Shyan, who is the
Head of Malaysian Smart Factory 4.0 under the Selangor
Human Resource Development Centre. More than 20
participants including those from Industry participated in
this talk.
In this talk, an overview of smart factor concept was
provided. The manufacturing process involving data
generation, visualization and analytics were discussed
with real case studies. Based on this, the skillsets
expected by these industries from the future workshop
for sustainable digital transformationwere highlighted.

keynote address from Professor A. Kumaravel from
the School of Computing, Bharath Institute of Higher
Education and Research, Chennai, India. He is also the
Director for the Centre of Excellence for Social Sensing
and Natural Language Processing. More than 40
participants including students joined this talk.
In this talk, how problems from different walks of life
can be formulated as a deep learning problem was
explored. Then, the techniques and tools that can be
used to solve a deep learning problem were discussed.
Finally, a demonstration was given on how the
evolution of solution can be investigated using one of
the tools.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society Malaysia Chapter with UTHM organized an elementary course on
Arduino and IOT. Assoc. Prof. Ts Dr. Muhammad Mahadi and Ts. Muhammad Shukri gave the course. The
course was conducted online on 4th of July 2021. It was organized together with BioMEMS Focus
Research Group and was attended by 45 participants of which 3 were IEEE members.

The IEEE SPS organized a webinar on Human Action Recognition by Prof. Dr. Syed Ab Rahman Abu Bakar,
on the 14 July 2021. The webinar focused on challenges on parameters and variables influencing human
action recognition. In doing so, the progress made in this field can be appreciated.

3rd Scientific Forum : Recent Advancement on Geomechanics & Geotechnics

IEEE SPS and UTP jointly conducted the 3rd Scientific Forum with Central Institute of Technology
Kokrajhar as MoU partner, on a forum with the theme focus on Recent Advancement on Geomechanics &
Geotechnics. The event was held on 27th July 2021. The free event was open to all participants including

Image Processing, Image Analysis and Real Time Imaging (IPIARTI) Symposium 2021
IEEE SPS and Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of In formation Technology jointly organized the
12th IPIARTI 2021 on the 4th of Au gust 2021. This event was organized to bring university and industry
community together to share latest trends in image processing, analysis and real-time implementation.
Keynotes were given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Asyraf (UKM), Dr. Qazi Mamoon (TM R &D) and Dr. Megat

Webinar : Visual Signal Processing : Objective to Subjective Problems

Assoc. Prof. Dr. John See was the speaker for the talk organized by the IEEE SPS titled, Visual Signal
Processing : Objective to Subjective Problems. This talk focused on subjective problems that are less
deterministic in nature in the field of visual signal processing which covers the processing and analysis of
visual data such as image and videos. The talk was conducted on the 11th of August 2021 and was
attended by 41 participants.

IEEE International Conference on Signal and Image Processing Applications (ICSIPA) 2021

IEEE ICSIPA is the flagship conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Malaysia Chapter and was held
from 13 – 15 September 2021. Keynotes were given by renowned speakers, Prof. Dong Xu (Uni. Sydney),
Prof. Jing-Ming Guo (National Taiwan Uni.), Prof. Celia Shahnazand (IEEE SPS WISP), Prof Leonardo
Tomazeli (Uni. Campinas, Brazil), Dr. Mark Chia (Mobius Group), Ir. Dr. Nordin Ramli (MI MOS Berhad) and
Mr. Tan Pei Seng (ViTrox Corp Berhad). This is the first time the event is conducted online. 46 papers were
presented, with 37% international researchers.
IEEE ICSIPA 2021 managed to organize the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) presentation competition. At the conference, the first IEEE Signal and
Image Processing Challenge Cup (SIPC-Malaysia) was also organized with the aims to create awareness on the use of signal processing
in identifying common road accidents and promote a safer environment for road commuters.

Annual General Meeting
The IEEE Education Society Malaysia Chapter Annual
General Meeting was successfully held on the 30th
January 2021. The event took place on a virtual platform
due to the Movement Control order at that time. A total
of 20 members attended this AGM. The new executive
committee of 2021 was successfully elected via an
online election process conducted by Dr. Sim Tze Ying .
Fruitful discussion was carried out during the AGM
meeting to improve IEEE EduSoc activities and
performances for the upcoming year. Congratulations to
the new ex-comm!!
iSTEM RBTK i-Suhu 2021 – Integrating IoT in
Electronic Design
The iSTEM RBTK i-Suhu 2021 program was organized by
the STEM-RBTK (STEM – Engineering Technology
Design) group from the School of Electrical Engineering
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and IEEE Education
Society Malaysia Chapter. The program was held
virtually in conjunction with the 2021 Minggu Sains
Negara (National Science Week), organized by the
Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation
(MOSTI), Malaysia. 34 teachers from 26 schools around
Malaysia participated in the iSTEM RBTK i-Suhu 2021
program. Each school’s representative was provided
with an i-Suhu kit. All participants attended the online
training session through Google Meet. In the first
session, participants were introduced to the JomHadir
database and mobile apps management. In the second
session, participants were divided into several groups in
breakout rooms and guided by designated facilitators
throughout the i-Suhu hands-on installation.

Program for the low-income families affected by
Covid19. This charity program covers eight different

Jelatek . The families were given monetary donations
and household supplies to help ease their burden
during this pandemic. Around 240 families received the

IEEE IMS Final Year Project Award at IIUM
IEEE IMS Malaysia Chapter has sponsored two awards for
2021 Final Year Project Award organized by International
Islamic University Malaysia. The awards are given to
encourage FYP projects related to area of
instrumentation and measurement. IEEE IMS awarded
the first prize with RM200 and RM100 for the second
prize along with certificates. The award winner for the
first place went to Ammar Azizi Bin Jasni with project
entitled “Tributary Water Depth and Velocity Remote

from IEEE ITS SB which aims to establish good relations and help hold a benchmarking program with the IEEE
UiTM Student Branch. There are two main activities in this program which are presentations and general
discussions. Completion of this program is preceded by a presentation session delivered by representatives of
IEEE UiTM SB and IEEE ITS SB. This program achieved the objectives which are to establishing good relations
with IEEE ITS SB and provide an opportunity to get to know other organizations. Moreover, this is an

Demonstration of energy saving technologies for
school students
Preparation for demonstration of energy saving
technologies for primary school students was carried out
from 1st to 30th July 2021 by IEEE UMSB committee
members. A demonstration for primary school students
is expected to be conducted at the end of October 2021.
The demonstration is part of the energy saving
awareness program that will be conducted by UMSB at
certain selected primary schools in Kuala Lumpur.
Demonstration of energy saving technologies
The requirements for maintaining the membership under
the Engineering Council include:
1. Have a minimum of 10 active members (attendance
of more than 50% of activities)
2. Organize a minimum of 3 activities per semester
(including workshops, industrial visits, industrial
talks, networking sessions, etc.)
3. Organize at least one signature event for every
academic year. (Run, Conference, Public Speaking
Competition, etc)
4. Organise an Annual General Meeting before the end
of the semester year to elect next batch of board of
directors
5. Submit a report of each activity and a complete
annual report (with financial report) of the
clubs/societies/student chapters to the faculty by
Week 15 of Semester 2.

Participation in the 2021 Engineering Council
Group Online Meeting
On 28th August 2021 at 3 pm, three committee
members from IEEE Universiti Malaya Student Branch
(UMSB) attended the 2021 Engineering Council Group
online meeting. The meeting was organized by the
Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaya. The meeting
was chaired by the Dean of Faculty of Engineering,
Professor Ir. Dr. Kaharudin Dimyati and was attended
by several representatives of student societies under
the Faculty of Engineering. The meeting discussed the
Constitution of Engineering Council.
The student societies that joined the meeting include
the IEEE UMSB, UM Engineering Society (PKUM), UM
Islamic Engineering Society (AKIUM), UM Institution of
Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), UM Student Society
(KMUM), Malaya Electrical Student Association
(MESA), Civil and Environmental Engineering Club
(CEEC), UM Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE),
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Club (CEUC),
UM American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), IChemE UM
Student Council, Beyond Engineering Innovation
Challenge (BEGIN) and Society of Petroleum Engineers
UM (SPE).

MMU Faculty of Engineering’s Distinguish Lecture on Grid Modernization: Technological

A2G Workshop Series
The A2G workshop series is a new initiative by the Faculty of
Engineering, Multimedia University, to equip students with
skills and knowledge in some of the most popular and in-
demand fields in industry4.0, whichare:
A: AI, B: Blockchain, C: Cybersecurity,
D: Data Science, E: Energy, F: Fiber Optic, G: 5G
IEEE MMU SB hosted the first workshops of this series on 15 th
and 16 th July, 2021. These workshops were about AI and
Machine Learning and provided the participants with a strong
foundation for further study or even to start a career in these
fields, should they wish to. IEEE MMU SB looks forward to
organising more of these workshops.
Innovations Beyond Smart Grid
In collaboration with IEEE NSU SB and IEEE NSU PES SB
chapter from Bangladesh, IEEE MMU SB and IEEE MMU PES
SB Chapter had organized Distinguish Lecture on Grid
Modernization: Technological Innovations Beyond Smart
Grid on 2 September 2021. We were honored to invite the
Smart Grid Business Development Leader for GE’s Grid
Solutions business, John D. Macdonald as our speaker. This
lecture has introduced the attendees to a vision for Grid
Modernization, with an emphasis on technical
developments beyond Smart Grid. There are a total of 76
participants from 21 countries and81 cities.

What You Need to Know About 5G Talk Introduction to GNU Octave Workshop

FOE Bonding Time WEBDEB- Web Design for Beginners
(IEEE Day 2021 Celebration) (IEEE Day 2021 Celebration)

In celebration of IEEE Day, we had FOE Bonding Time on 1
October 2021, with 30 participants from the Faculty of
Engineering. The program intends to create a bond
between students of the Faculty of Engineering. In the past
years, IEEE MMU Student Branch would conduct FOE Night
to celebrate the freshies of the faculty. However, this year,
we had it online. We had ice-breaking, games, lucky draw
and sharing session by past chairs of the IEEE MMU Student
Branch. Four past chairs of the student branch, Low Pik Jian
(chairperson 2007), Riad Zenati (chairperson 2010), Zubair
Hassan (chairperson 2013/2014), and Mohammed Hussein
Saleh Mohammed Haram (chairperson 2017-2019), joined
us that day. Theyshared their experiences, tips in managing
university life and answered questions from students
regarding the future after graduation.
WEBDEB is a series of workshops a workshop organized by
IEEE MMU Student Branch and IEEE GUC Student Branch to
introduce basics of web development to the students, in
conjunction with IEEE day. It covers the basic concept of
Web Development, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and
React.
WEBDEB was held on 1st Oct - 3rd Oct. There are total 121
participants from various background joined the workshop.
At the end of the workshop, participants were able to create
a basic website from scratch. IEEE MMU SB looks forward to
host more of these workshops.
