An elastomeric bearing pad is a device constructed partially or wholly from elastomer,
the purpose of which is to transmit loads and accommodate movements between
bridge and its supporting structure. Reinforced bearing consists of alternate layers
of steel or fabric reinforcement and elastomer, bonded together.

longitudinal axis of the bridge (trial size) W = 400.00 mm
Thickness of elastomer rubber layer hr1 = 6.00 mm
hr2 = 10.00 mm
Quantity of restraining plate NS = 0.00 pcs
Thickness of restraining plate hS = 0.00 mm

4 Design Method A
4.1 Check for compressive stress
Shape factor of one layer of bearing S = L*W / 2*hr1*(L+W)
S/b = 10.05
For Service Load Design (Percentage of Basic
Unit Stress as per AASHTO Table 3.22.1A) 1 % = 150.00 %
Allowable Compressive Stress sc a) sc,TL = GS / b
= 6.59 Mpa
b) sc,TL = 1000.00 psi
= 6.90 Mpa
Actual Compressive Stress sc a) sc,TL = RT / (W*L)
= 4.25 Mpa
SAFE…….O.K.!
4.2 Check for compressive deflection
Deflection due to total load and to live load alone shall be considered separately.
Instantaneous deflection shall be………………. Dc = S ecihri.
i
where: eci = Instantaneous compressive strain in elastomer number i (change in
thickness divided by the unstressed thickness)
hri = Thickness of elastomer layer number i.
Shape factor of one layer of bearing S = L*W / (2*hr2*(L+W)
Shape factor of one layer of bearing S = L*W / (2*hr2*(L+W)
(For cover layer) S/b = 7.76
From AASHTO Figure 14.4.1.2B, sc,TL = 616.63 psi
Compressive Strain,eci (%) eci = 2.90 %
Instantaneous deflection Dc = 0.64 mm
Add DCR(%) due to creep deflection at 25 years DCR = 0.22 mm
Total compressive deflection, DcT DcT = 0.86 mm

4.3 Check for shear

The max. shear deformation of the bearing, Ds, shall be taken as the horizontal
bridge movement, modified to account for pier flexibility and cons't. procedures.
Maximum shear deformation of the bearing Ds = VT*hrT / (W*L*G)
Ds = 7.57 mm
The bearing shall be designed so that hrT³ 2*Ds 2*Ds = 15.14 mm
Total thickness of elastomer rubber hrT = 21.00 mm
SAFE…….O.K.!

4.4 Check for rotational deformations

The rotational deformations about each axis shall be taken as maximum possible

rotation between the top and bottom of the bearing caused by initial lack of
parallelism and girder end rotation. Limiting values shall be qTL £ 2*Dc / L.
Rotn'l. deformation parallel to long'l. axis qTL,L £ 2*Dc / L
qTL,L = 0.00363 rad
Rotn'l. deformation perpendicular to long'l. axis qTL,W £ 2*Dc / W
qTL,W = 0.00431 rad

4.5 Check for stability

To ensure stability, the total thickness of the bearing shall not exceed the smallest
of: L/3, W/3 or D/4 for reinforced bearing.
Thickness parallel to longitudinal axis L/3 = 158.33 mm
Thickness perpendicular to longitudinal axis W/3 = 133.33 mm
Total thickness of elastomeric bearing pad tEP = 21.00 mm
SAFE…….O.K.!

4.6 Check for thickness of reinforcement

The reinforcement shall be fabric or steel and its resistance in pounds per linear
inch at working stress levels in each direction shall not be less than 1,700 hri.
inch at working stress levels in each direction shall not be less than 1,700 hri.
hri = hr1 = 6.00 mm
Allow. resistance of reinforcement in kN / l.mm. = 45.37 kN/mm
The allowable stress ranged based on fatique loadings shall be taken from AASHTO
Table 10.3.1A using category A for a Nonredundant Load Path Structure.
Allowable Fatique Stress, Fsr (For 2,000,000 cycles) Fsr = 165.48 MPa
Resistance of reinforcement in kN / l.mm. = 0.99 kN/mm
